The line

The family’s own surname line, and with it everyone Dick Ellingwood descends from. Ralph Ellinwood came to Salem on the Truelove in 1635 and settled at Beverly; the book The Ellingwood Line follows him and his sons. The Ellingwoods went to sea from Beverly, to Boston, to the Penobscot in Maine, and from there, about 1817, west to Dearborn County, Indiana, where Finley was born in 1852.

The line at a glance

Ralph Ellinwood (c. 1607-1673/4), of Salem and Beverly > Ralph (1657-c. 1741) > Ralph (1694-1728/9), lost at sea > Israel (b. 1714, Beverly), of Boston > Richard (b. 1742, Boston) > Richard (1767-1803), of Frankfort, Maine > Richard (1790-1871), of Manchester, Indiana > Elijah (1819-1872) > Dr. Finley Ellingwood (1852-1920), physician and medical author of Evanston, Illinois > Richard Everett “Cudge” Ellingwood Sr. (1895-1985), of Madison and Spokane > Richard Everett “Dick” Ellingwood Jr. (1929-2019) > John Ellingwood and his children.

The wives’ families: the Rices of Cumberland County, Maine (Finley’s mother); the Elliotts and Adamses of Saratoga County, New York (Jennie Elliott’s); and the Shorts and Pattullos of Ontario (Ruth Short’s).

How sure it is

  • Ralph I and Ralph II are documented in the Ellingwood book’s research: the Truelove register, the Essex county registers and courts, the Marblehead and Beverly records.
  • Finley to the present rests on Cudge’s memoir and its records.
  • Between them, from Ralph III to Elijah, the line comes from the Ancestry tree (exported October 2026) and the Geneanet tree it draws on. It is marked possible link by link until records are found. It fits what the memoir says: Cudge was named for “my great grandfather Richard Ellingwood”, and Richard of Indiana was Finley’s grandfather. The comparison is in research/gedcom/report-ellingwood-mcmillan.md.

Sources

Cudge’s memoir, Cudge (1968-70), is the main source for four generations: his parents, brothers and sisters, his marriage to Ruth Short and their five children. His 1985 obituary confirms the outline. Both are in Books. The censuses of 1880-1930 and the Cook County marriage index come through the Ancestry tree.

Open questions

  • Israel’s parents. Israel, born at Beverly in 1714, joins the Beverly Ellinwoods to the Boston and Maine Ellingwoods. The Beverly vital records should show his birth and parents.
  • Richard of Frankfort’s birth in Boston (1767), joining the Maine family to Israel’s.
  • Records for Elijah: his marriage to Mary Abigail Rice and the censuses of 1850-1870.
  • The Short side. Ruth’s birth, her parents’ marriage and her father’s death are now in hand, and prove her parents and grandparents. Open: John Short’s parents in Northumberland, the Jeffreys and Lyalls of Berwickshire, Alexander Pattullo’s in Dundee and Jane Robson’s in Roxburghshire (thread).
  • Records to attach: Dick’s birth (Madison, 1929) and death (2019), and John’s birth.
