Joseph Cole
Joseph Cole Jr. of Eastham, Massachusetts, born there in 1718, the eldest son of Joseph Cole by his second wife, Mercy Hinckley. He married Sarah Nickerson at Harwich in 1737 and had five children at Eastham, among them the twins Mary and Sarah, the latter probably the wife of John Holdershaw. He and his wife joined the Eastham church in 1774, and he died in 1795.

Father of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw. Born at Eastham, the eldest son of Joseph Cole by his second wife, Mercy Hinckley. As “Joseph Cole jur of Eastham” he entered his intention with “Sarah Nickerson of harwich” on 1 Oct 1737, and they were married at Harwich on 17 November by Joseph Doane, justice of the peace (record). Their children, born at Eastham: the twins Mary (m. David Snow, 1765) and Sarah, 9 Sept 1738; Reuben, 19 Jan 1742/3 (m. Hannah Cole); Abiel, 24 Dec 1745 (m. Hannah Linnell); and Henry, 9 July 1748 (m. Desire Bassett) (record, source). In 1764 his father deeded his lands to him and his half-brother Gershom (record). He and Sarah joined the Eastham (Orleans) church on 2 May 1774, the year after his son-in-law John Holdershaw. He died in 1795 in the south parish of Eastham.
Open questions
- His probate (Barnstable, 1795): a will or division naming “Sarah Shaw” or “Holdershaw” would prove that his daughter Sarah was Hope Holdershaw’s mother.
