Dorothy Portland
Wife of Thomas Rowlandson of Salisbury, Massachusetts, whom she married in 1654, and probably the mother of Martha (Rowlandson) Ellinwood, one of their nine children. Her eldest son Thomas was killed at Lancaster in 1676, and in 1677 she was convicted of stealing from William Bradbury. Widowed in 1682, she administered her son Joseph's estate in 1694. Notes
Mother of Martha (Rowlandson) Ellinwood. She married Thomas Rowlandson at Salisbury on 17 May 1654 (“Thomas, and Dorethie Portland, May 17, 1654”) and bore him nine children there between 1655 and 1668/9, among them the twins Mary and Martha in August 1666 (record). In 1676 her eldest son Thomas was killed at Lancaster, in the attack on her brother-in-law’s house.
In 1677 “Dorethie Rolenson, for stealing from Mr. Wm. Bradbury to the value of 20s.” was ordered to pay treble damages or be whipped ten stripes (record). William Bradbury’s wife Mary was condemned as a witch in 1692. Dorothy was named in her husband’s will in 1682; the widow seems to be “Dorothy Perin” in 1689, but as “Dorothy Rowlandson” she was appointed on 28 Sept 1694 to administer the estate of her son Joseph, a cordwainer (source). Her parents and her death are not known.
