Father
Richard Ellingwood 1742–bef. 1784

The Suffolk guardianship (1785) and the distribution of his brother Joseph's estate (1790) make Richard and Ralph sons of Richard and Sarah of Boston. That they are the Richard and Ralph of Frankfort rests on the matching pair of names and ages, Ralph's 1800 census entry at Frankfort ("from whence emigrated: Boston"), the Frankfort Richard's children Sarah, Susannah and Ralph, and the Hitchborne in-laws on the same river. Ruth Gray (1988) made the same identification. No single record says it.

Notes

A Boston boy of about seventeen when his father died, put under a guardian in November 1785 “a Minor above 14 years of age Son of Richard Ellingwood late of said Boston, deceased” (record). By December 1787 he was on the Penobscot, marrying Hope Holdershaw at Orrington (record); his brother Ralph married her sister Delilah there in 1792. In 1790 he headed a household at Frankfort (record); in 1800 he was there again, with three boys, three girls and two women (record).

A trader and merchant of Frankfort, at Bald Hill Cove (now in Winterport), with a fishery and a store at the shore. In 1801 the Massachusetts General Court made up a deficiency in his lot of land in Hampden. His will of 11 August 1802 left everything to “my Beloved Wife Hopey” while she remained his widow, then to his six children, Richard, John, Sarah, Ralph, Susannah and Lucy; his brother Ralph witnessed it. It was proved on 2 May 1803. The inventory, $3,588.44, ran from earthenware and drawshaves in the store to 72 acres of homestead land, two lots in Goshen, old salmon nets, and “3/4ths of Schooner Hope”, probably named for his wife (record).
