Notes

Mother of Ruth Ethelwyn (Short) Ellingwood. Cudge’s memoir has Ruth’s cousin as Duff Pattullo, premier of British Columbia, and Ruth’s daughter Mary Jane named for her two grandmothers. When Cudge asked for Ruth’s hand in 1920 “her sweet mother” gave her consent “with that nice quiet smile of hers.”

She was the youngest of the children of Halkett Pattullo (1809-1855) and Jane Robson (1809-1879), Scottish settlers of Caledon who moved to Blenheim Township, Oxford County, in 1855. Her marriage registration names her parents (record), her death certificate (Spokane, 1932) her father, and a study of her brother Thomas, the Barkerville gold miner, calls her “the youngest” and “a favourite”; his will left her two thousand dollars (source). Her brothers included George Robson Pattullo, editor of the Woodstock Sentinel and father of Duff Pattullo, and Andrew Pattullo, member of the Ontario legislature, who was a witness at her wedding: so Duff was Ruth’s first cousin (research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Wives_Families.md).

She married John G. Short at Woodstock on 5 November 1879, and bore him five children there between 1880 and 1893: Jeffrey, Mary, Jeannie Beatrice, Arthur, who died as a baby, and Ruth. She followed her husband to Chicago with the children in 1897 (record), and by 1910 they were at Spokane. Widowed in 1916, she lived on in Spokane with her unmarried daughter Mary, and was a witness, as “Mrs. J. G. Short,” at Ruth’s wedding in 1921.
