Martha Rowlandson

Also Martha Ellinwood

Wife of Ralph Ellinwood II, married at Marblehead on 19 August 1691, when she was "of Beverly", and mother of seven children, Ralph among them. She was born at Salisbury in 1666, a twin, the daughter of Thomas Rowlandson and probably of Dorothy Portland. Mary Rowlandson, author of the 1682 captivity narrative, was very probably her aunt by marriage.

Notes

Wife of Ralph Ellinwood II, married at Marblehead on 19 August 1691: “Ralph [Ellinwood], and Martha Rowlandson of Beverly” (record). The Beverly town record of their daughter Return’s birth names her, “Return, d. Ralph and Marthew”, against the church editors’ bracketed “[Ellen]” (record).

She was born at Salisbury on 24 August 1666, a twin, daughter of Thomas Rowlandson and Dorothy Portland (record); an agreement about her father’s estate in 1706 names “Ralph Elenwood and Martha his wife” among his children, with John Ellenwood, her husband’s brother, who had married her sister Elizabeth in 1684/5 (source). Her father was a brother of Rev. Joseph Rowlandson of Lancaster, husband of Mary Rowlandson, the author of the captivity narrative of 1682, as Savage and Hoyt both have it; and her brother Thomas, nineteen, was killed in the attack on the Rowlandsons’ garrison house at Lancaster on 10 February 1675/6, listed as “nephew of the minister” (source). So Mary Rowlandson was very probably her aunt by marriage. This replaces the earlier finding that no connection to Rev. Joseph had been found (books/ellingwood/ellingwood-ch2.md, note 16; research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Kin_Connections.md, section 3.2).

The Salisbury births also record a son of hers before her marriage, “Sam[ue]ll, s. Martha [Rolenson], Jan. 12, 1686 [1687],” who died eight days later (record). When she married Ralph in 1691 she was “of Beverly,” probably living near her married sister Elizabeth at Bass River.
