Notes

Of Braintree. His will (25 July 1695) leaves his son Peter the Mendon lands bought from his brother William.

This is the branch Mollie’s typescript follows: Thomas > Deacon Peter > Eliphalet > Elisha. The only Eliphalet son of Peter (b. 1691/2) lived and died at Bellingham, so the chain does not reach Deacon Elisha Holbrook of Wellfleet. Mollie also gives “Jane Kingman” as a wife of Thomas the immigrant, apparently merging him with this Thomas.

Mollie's typescript· 1 passage · 4 claims checked

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie calls him a man of enterprise and wealth, married to Joanna, who bought fifty-three acres at Braintree and the Mendon land of his brother William, which he left to his son Peter.

THOMAS HOLBROOK (2) was a man of enterprise and wealth. His wife's name was Joanna ... He bought fifty-three acres in Braintree, and was the owner of much real estate.

Checked against the records

Thomas married Experience Leland, then Jane Kingman

He married Jane Powyes at St John's, Glastonbury, on 12 Sept 1616. She sailed with him and the children in 1635, aged 34, and is named in his will of 1668. Joanna, said to be a Kingman, was the wife of his son Thomas of Braintree; Lord (1942) gives Experience Leland to another Thomas Holbrook.

Deacon Peter Holbrook and Alice Godfrey are in the direct line

Peter (b. 1655) was a real grandson of Thomas the immigrant, through Thomas of Braintree, but the line does not run through him. It runs through the immigrant's eldest son, Capt. John (1618-1699), then John of Scituate (c. 1650-1731) and Capt. John (1686-by 1749), who was Elisha's father.

  • Disproven
Peter Holbrook's wife Alice was a daughter of Francis Godfrey

Not ancestral, because Peter is not in the direct line: Elisha's father was John Holbrook of Scituate and Eastham. Mollie offers the Godfrey parentage herself only as an assumption "until proved", resting on a will she remembered but could not find again.

  • Disproven
John Godfrey was Bishop of Bath on or before 1200

No John Godfrey held the see. Bath had a Bishop Godfrey (1123-1135), but Godfrey was his only name, not a family surname, so he shows nothing about any Godfrey family. In any case the Godfreys are not ancestors.
