Notes

Daughter of Israel Ellingwood and Susanna (Rand), born and baptized at Boston (record); in 1753, “about nine”, under her father’s guardianship for her grandfather Rand’s legacy, and in 1785 one of his four heirs (record). She married Robert Hitchborne, cooper, on 16 July 1765. He was a lieutenant in Bromfield’s Boston regiment in 1776, executor of her father’s will, and later of Hampden and Cape Jellison on the Penobscot, where he died in 1800: a second link between this family and the Penobscot. Robert, baptized at the Brick Church on 28 March 1742, was the son of Thomas Hichborn, whose sister Deborah was Paul Revere’s mother: their mother Frances’s will names both “son Thomas” and “daughter Deborah Revere” (source). So Robert was Paul Revere’s first cousin. On 29 November 1773 the two of them stood the armed watch on the tea ship Dartmouth at Griffin’s Wharf (source), and Robert and Susanna named a son Paul Revere Hichborn. Their schooner Susannah was lost off Cape Ann in October 1798 with two of their daughters aboard. Among their grandchildren and great-grandchildren were Nathan Griffin Hichborn, Treasurer of Maine, and Rear Adm. Philip Hichborn, Chief Constructor of the U.S. Navy (see Notable connections and research/ellingwood/Ellingwood_Kin_Connections.md). She died at Boston, 28 Nov 1807.
