Stones thrown at the post office, Vancouver, 19 June 1938
About it
Two young men hurl stones in mid-stride, one in a jacket and white trousers, the other in shirtsleeves, with a crowd in hats behind them. The BC Archives catalogues it as “Demonstrators throwing rocks and bricks at the post office after marching up Granville Street; the post office riot; Vancouver,” dated 19 June 1938. It is the anger of the morning after the gas and the clubs, when the men streamed through downtown breaking windows; the premier, Duff Pattullo, first cousin of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood, flew in the next day “to find the city quiet.”
