Ellingwood Master Family Tree

Master reference for the connections in the Ellingwood paternal line, from Ralph Ellingwood, who came to Massachusetts on the Truelove in 1635, to Jordan Ellingwood. It records each direct ancestor with spouses and children, how each parent-child step is supported, and the families who married in. Biographies, anecdotes and the full source notes for each person are in the companion file, Ellingwood_Master_Research.md.

Last revised: 4 October 2026 (first edition). Built from the Chapter One and Chapter Two research files, the FamilySearch Family Tree, the Suffolk and Hancock County probate records read on FamilySearch this session, the printed Boston, Beverly, Salem and Marblehead records, and the compiled genealogies of Leonard Ellinwood (1963) and Ruth Gray (1988).

How each entry reads

  • Line 1: Name (birth - death). Direct ancestors are in bold.
  • Then birth, death, marriage(s), and a short note.
  • Link: how the parent-child step to this person is supported, with its rating.
  • Siblings of direct ancestors get a single line.

Ratings. Two scales, used where they matter rather than on every line.

  • How we know it: [D] Documented (a primary record, or a published transcript, index or abstract of one); [C] Compiled (a secondary genealogy, county history or online tree); [I] Inferred (our own reasoning from the records); [T] Tradition (family lore with no source).
  • How sure we are (for parent-child links and disputed points): Proven, Probable, Possible, Disproven.

Abbreviations: b. born; bapt. baptised; chr. christened; d. died; bur. buried; m. married; int. marriage intention; c. about; bef. before; aft. after; VR printed vital records; EQC Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County; FS FamilySearch.

Dates. Before 1752 the legal year began on 25 March, so a date between 1 January and 24 March is written with both years (7 Jan 1742/3). Old-style records number the months from March, so "3:2mo:1664" is 3 April 1664.

The line at a glance

Ralph I (c. 1607 - 1673/4) > Ralph Jr. (1656/7 - aft. Apr 1741) > Ralph III (1694 - 1728/9) > Capt. Israel (1714 - 1785) > Richard (1742/3 - 1784) > Richard (c. 1767 - 1802/3) > Richard (1790 - 1864) > Elijah (1819 - 1872) > Dr. Finley (1852 - 1920) > Richard Everett "Cudge" (1895 - 1985) > Richard Everett "Dick" Jr. (1929 - 2019) > John > Jordan

Places: England (origin unknown) > Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts > Boston > Frankfort and Hampden on the Penobscot River, Maine > Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana > Kankakee, Illinois > Chicago and Evanston, Illinois > Madison, Wisconsin > Spokane, Washington.

Strength of each step

Step Rating What supports it
Ralph I > Ralph Jr. [D] Proven Essex County register of vital returns: "Raulph Elmwood maryed to Ellen Lyn" 14 March [16]55, "ther son Raulph born 18th March 57" (FS film 007009706, item 3, image 18). Ralph I's will (Jan 1673/4) names son "Raph" and gives him the double portion.
Ralph Jr. > Ralph III [D] Proven Beverly VR: "Elenwood, Ralph, s. Ralph and Martha, Apr. 18, 1694." Ralph Jr.'s will (1741, Essex Probate docket 12365) leaves a fifth of his real estate to "the Children of my Son Ralph Elinwood Decd" and names "my Two Grandsons Israel Elinwood & Ralph Elinwood."
Ralph III > Israel [D] Proven Beverly register, family of Ralph and Sarah Ellingwood: Israel b. 29 Sept 1714 (FS image group 004934217, image 138). Grandfather's will of 1741 names grandson Israel. The 1743 division of Ralph III's estate gives Israel two shares as eldest son; marginal note of 6 Dec 1743: "Israel Ellingwood of Boston, coaster, for self & guardian of brother Daniel, a minor."
Israel > Richard (1742/3) [D] Proven Boston Births p. 245: "Richard Son of Israel and Susanna Ellinwood, Born 7 January 1742." First Church in Boston baptism 16 Jan 1743. Suffolk Probate, 8 June 1753: Israel appointed guardian "unto your Son Richard Ellingwood a minor aged about 11 years." Israel's will, proved 19 Mar 1785, names children Richard, Susanna, Ralph and Sarah.
Richard (1742/3) > Richard (c. 1767) [D] for the Boston family, [I] for the identity with the Frankfort man. Proven by the weight of evidence Suffolk Probate, 22 Nov 1785 (vol. 84, pp. 694-695, docket 18561): Enoch James of Boston, blacksmith, guardian "unto Richard Ellingwood a Minor above 14 years of age Son of Richard Ellingwood late of said Boston, deceased." Suffolk Probate, 26 Jan 1790 (vol. 89, p. 71, docket 19424): the estate of Joseph Ellingwood, late of Boston, divided between "Sarah, the wife of Isaac Downs, the Mother of said deceased" and "Richard Ellingwood, and Ralph Ellingwood, brothers of said Joseph." The Richard and Ralph who appear on the Penobscot from 1787 match this pair in names and ages; Ralph's 1800 census entry at Frankfort gives "Boston" as the place he came from; the Frankfort Richard named children Sarah, Susannah and Ralph. Ruth Gray, Maine Families in 1790 vol. 1 (1988), pp. 95-96, makes the same identification. No single record says "Richard of Frankfort, son of Richard of Boston."
Richard (c. 1767) > Richard (1790) [D] will; [C] Bible. Probable (strong) Will of Richard Ellingwood of Frankfort, 11 Aug 1802, names his six children, Richard first (Hancock Probate docket 2056). A family Bible owned in 1929 by Elliott Lee Ellingwood of Pasadena (Finley's son) records Richard Ellingwood b. 2 Feb 1790, d. 25 Mar 1864, m. 1809 Hannah Brown (cited by Gray 1988). The Indiana Richard was born in Maine about 1790 (1850 census) and named a daughter Hope (b. 1813) after the Frankfort Richard's wife.
Richard (1790) > Elijah [I] plus [C] Bible. Probable (strong) No record yet found names Elijah's father. Elijah was born 27 Nov 1819 at Manchester, Dearborn County, where Richard was living by the 1820 census; the Bible recording Richard was kept by Elijah's grandson Elliott Lee.
Elijah > Finley [D] Proven 1860 census, Momence, Kankakee Co., Illinois: Finley in Elijah's household. Who's Who in America (1912-1921, supplied by Finley): "s. Elijah and Mary Abigail (Rice) E." Kankakee County Court, 27 Jan 1875: Finley appointed guardian of "his brother" Ellsworth Ellingwood, an orphan aged ten.
Finley > Richard Everett (Cudge) [D] Proven Cook County birth certificate (delayed registration 23 Nov 1955): Richard Everett Ellingwood b. 14 Feb 1895, Evanston, father Finley Ellingwood b. Manchester, Indiana, mother Jennie S. Elliott b. Saratoga, New York. 1900 and 1910 Evanston censuses. Finley's 1918 biography and 1920 death notice name the son.
Cudge > Dick [D] Proven 1930 Madison and 1940 Spokane censuses; Dick's obituary (Spokesman-Review, 28 Apr 2019) names his parents "Cudge and Ruth."
Dick > John > Jordan [D] Proven Dick's 2019 obituary names his son John (Lynn) and grandchildren including Jordan, Ross and Lauren; family knowledge.

Part Nine: Ellingwoods not joined to the line

Kept here so their records are not mistaken for ours.

  • Leonard Ellinwood's appendix (1963, pp. 377 ff.) lists Finley, the Frankfort Ralph (as "m. Dolly Shaw 26 July 1791," d. 11 Mar 1857), Joseph of Winterport (b. 1796), a privateersman Joseph of the War of 1812, and a "Richard Ellinwood" in the Cincinnati census of 1817 as unconnected individuals. Leonard did not join the Penobscot or Indiana families to Israel; his main text ends Richard (1742/3) with his marriage.
  • Ralph of Frankfort's family (Delilah Holdershaw): Mary (m. Alexander Staples), Joseph (1796-1838, m. Sarah Folsom), Delilah (1798-1844, m. ___ Howe), William, Nathan (1804-1881), Richard (1804-1866, m. Lydia Bartlett), Irene (m. ___ Whitcomb), John (1813-1855). Four sons settled at Ellingwood's Corner, Winterport.
  • The Beverly privateersmen of the Revolution: Benjamin (commander of the Active and Sebastian), Joshua of Beverly (commander of the Mars and Valiant), William (1st mate of the Saratoga). Descendants of Ralph I's other sons, not ours.
  • Leonard Ellinwood's own line splits from ours at Ralph Jr.'s sons: Ralph I > Ralph Jr. > Thomas (1703) > Thomas (1728) > Daniel (1751) > James > Daniel > Daniel Webster > George Francis > Leonard (1905).
  • "ELEANOR, widow, was buried on April 29, 1732" (Beverly VR, in Leonard's appendix). Unidentified. Not Ralph I's widow, who was by then Eleanor Bath and would have been about 96.

  1. # Ellingwood Master Family Tree
  2. Biographies, anecdotes and the full source notes for each person are in the companion file, `Ellingwood_Master_Research.md`.
  3. **Last revised:** 4 October 2026 (first edition).
  4. **How each entry reads**
  5. - Line 1: **Name** (birth - death). Direct ancestors are in bold.
  6. - Then birth, death, marriage(s), and a short note.
  7. - **Link:** how the parent-child step to this person is supported, with its rating.
  8. - Siblings of direct ancestors get a single line.
  9. **Ratings.** Two scales, used where they matter rather than on every line.
  10. - How we know it: [D] Documented (a primary record, or a published transcript, index or abstract of one); [C] Compiled (a secondary genealogy, county history or online tree); [I] Inferred (our own reasoning from the records); [T] Tradition (family lore with no source).
  11. - How sure we are (for parent-child links and disputed points): **Proven**, **Probable**, **Possible**, **Disproven**.
  12. **Abbreviations:** b. born; bapt. baptised; chr. christened; d. died; bur. buried; m. married; int. marriage intention; c. about; bef. before; aft. after; VR printed vital records; EQC Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County; FS FamilySearch.
  13. **Dates.** Before 1752 the legal year began on 25 March, so a date between 1 January and 24 March is written with both years (7 Jan 1742/3). Old-style records number the months from March, so "3:2mo:1664" is 3 April 1664.

  15. ## The line at a glance
  16. Ralph I (c. 1607 - 1673/4) > Ralph Jr. (1656/7 - aft. Apr 1741) > Ralph III (1694 - 1728/9) > Capt. Israel (1714 - 1785) > Richard (1742/3 - 1784) > Richard (c. 1767 - 1802/3) > Richard (1790 - 1864) > Elijah (1819 - 1872) > Dr. Finley (1852 - 1920) > Richard Everett "Cudge" (1895 - 1985) > Richard Everett "Dick" Jr. (1929 - 2019) > John > Jordan
  17. **Places:** England (origin unknown) > Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts > Boston > Frankfort and Hampden on the Penobscot River, Maine > Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana > Kankakee, Illinois > Chicago and Evanston, Illinois > Madison, Wisconsin > Spokane, Washington.
  18. ## Strength of each step
  19. | Step | Rating | What supports it |
  20. |---|---|---|
  21. | Ralph I > Ralph Jr. | [D] **Proven** | Essex County register of vital returns: "Raulph Elmwood maryed to Ellen Lyn" 14 March [16]55, "ther son Raulph born 18th March 57" (FS film 007009706, item 3, image 18). Ralph I's will (Jan 1673/4) names son "Raph" and gives him the double portion. |
  22. | Ralph Jr. > Ralph III | [D] **Proven** | Beverly VR: "Elenwood, Ralph, s. Ralph and Martha, Apr. 18, 1694." Ralph Jr.'s will (1741, Essex Probate docket 12365) leaves a fifth of his real estate to "the Children of my Son Ralph Elinwood Decd" and names "my Two Grandsons Israel Elinwood & Ralph Elinwood." |
  23. | Ralph III > Israel | [D] **Proven** | Beverly register, family of Ralph and Sarah Ellingwood: Israel b. 29 Sept 1714 (FS image group 004934217, image 138). Grandfather's will of 1741 names grandson Israel. The 1743 division of Ralph III's estate gives Israel two shares as eldest son; marginal note of 6 Dec 1743: "Israel Ellingwood of Boston, coaster, for self & guardian of brother Daniel, a minor." |
  24. | Israel > Richard (1742/3) | [D] **Proven** | Boston Births p. |
  25. | Richard (1742/3) > Richard (c. 1767) | [D] for the Boston family, [I] for the identity with the Frankfort man. **Proven** by the weight of evidence | Suffolk Probate, 22 Nov 1785 (vol. Ruth Gray, *Maine Families in 1790* vol. 1 (1988), pp. 95-96, makes the same identification. No single record says "Richard of Frankfort, son of Richard of Boston." |
  26. | Richard (c. 1767) > Richard (1790) | [D] will; [C] Bible. **Probable** (strong) | Will of Richard Ellingwood of Frankfort, 11 Aug 1802, names his six children, Richard first (Hancock Probate docket 2056). |
  27. | Richard (1790) > Elijah | [I] plus [C] Bible. **Probable** (strong) | No record yet found names Elijah's father. Elijah was born 27 Nov 1819 at Manchester, Dearborn County, where Richard was living by the 1820 census; the Bible recording Richard was kept by Elijah's grandson Elliott Lee. |
  28. | Elijah > Finley | [D] **Proven** | 1860 census, Momence, Kankakee Co., Illinois: Finley in Elijah's household. |
  29. | Finley > Richard Everett (Cudge) | [D] **Proven** | Cook County birth certificate (delayed registration 23 Nov 1955): Richard Everett Ellingwood b. 14 Feb 1895, Evanston, father Finley Ellingwood b. Manchester, Indiana, mother Jennie S. Elliott b. Saratoga, New York. 1900 and 1910 Evanston censuses. Finley's 1918 biography and 1920 death notice name the son. |
  30. | Cudge > Dick | [D] **Proven** | 1930 Madison and 1940 Spokane censuses; Dick's obituary (Spokesman-Review, 28 Apr 2019) names his parents "Cudge and Ruth." |
  31. | Dick > John > Jordan | [D] **Proven** | Dick's 2019 obituary names his son John (Lynn) and grandchildren including Jordan, Ross and Lauren; family knowledge. |
