Famous kin through the Deyos and Stephen Hopkins: verification and new lines

Research report, 9 October 2026, for the Notable connections of Richard Everett "Dick" Ellingwood Jr. (1929-2019, Richard Everett Ellingwood Jr.). This report is the only file written; nothing else in the archive was changed.

Evidence tiers: [D] documented (a record, or a published transcript or abstract of one); [C] compiled (a genealogy, county history, online tree, Wikipedia); [I] inferred; [T] tradition. Ratings: proven / probable / possible / disproven. "Checked in the text" means I read the passage myself in the archive.org full text (OCR) of the book named; quotations are given as printed, with OCR slips mended only where marked.

Abbreviations: H&H = Kenneth E. Hasbrouck and Ruth P. Heidgerd, The Deyo (Deyoe) Family (1958); LeFevre = Ralph LeFevre, History of New Paltz, New York, and its Old Families (2nd ed., 1909); K. Summary

Part 1, the Deyo kin. Every famous person's side now has a source other than Wikipedia for most steps, chiefly Kenneth Hasbrouck's 1961 genealogy, LeFevre, the Deyo genealogy, the Elting study and the New Paltz church baptisms. Whatever the famous side, no Deyo connection can rise above probable, because Dick's own Deyo line has one compiled step with a conflict (James Deyoe to Peter Deyo of 1739; see James Deyoe).

Famous person Shared ancestors Famous side Whole line Relationship to Dick
Capt. Washington Irving Chambers Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol probable (one identification [I]) probable sixth cousin, three times removed
Ezra H. Fitch Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol probable to proven probable sixth cousin, three times removed
Rep. Jay LeFevre Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol proven to probable probable seventh cousin, twice removed
Abraham Bruyn Hasbrouck Chrétien Deyo (and Jeanne Verbeau) probable to proven probable fourth cousin, six times removed
Laurence H. Snyder Chrétien Deyo (and Jeanne Verbeau) top half probable, lower three steps Wikipedia only possible eighth cousin, twice removed
Fred Upton Chrétien Deyo (and Jeanne Verbeau) two unsourced steps; one garbled step corrected possible tenth cousin
Kate Upton as Fred as Fred possible tenth cousin, once removed

None is dropped. Pierre Deyo was Chrétien's son: proven (his father's will, the heirs' agreement of 1687 and the 1681 baptism). The Pierre lines are full kin (Pierre and Agathe Nickol). The Chrétien lines are full on present evidence: Jeanne Verbeau is his only known wife, but no record names the mother of any of his children.

The garbled Upton step: Wikipedia's "Philippus Gumaer (1727-1778)" was Philip (Philippus) Swartwout, son of Maj. James (Jacobus) Swartwout and Anna Gumaer, and his son Peter was by his second wife, Deborah Schoonover (Gumaer 1890). A second garble, in Wikipedia's tree for Jay LeFevre: "Maria DuBois (1748-1817) m. Nathaniel LeFevre" should be Maria (Mary) Deyo, daughter of Abraham Deyo Jr. and Elizabeth DuBois.

Part 2, Stephen Hopkins. Dick is 11 generations below Stephen Hopkins and 10 below Nicholas Snow and Constance Hopkins. Found, with the most checkable lines first:

Famous person Through Full or half Whole line Relationship to Dick
Robert Treat Paine (signer of the Declaration) Constance (Mary Snow) full probable third cousin, six times removed
William Standish Knowles (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2001) Constance, via Dick's own Joseph Cole Jr. and Sarah Nickerson full possible (one step) fifth cousin, once removed
Norman Rockwell Giles full possible (upper half documented) tenth cousin
Vannevar Bush Giles full possible eighth cousin, twice removed
Harry Hopkins Giles full possible eighth cousin, twice removed
Allison Janney Constance (Mark Snow) full possible (upper four steps documented) ninth cousin, twice removed
Taylor Swift Constance (Mark Snow and Jane Prence) full possible (upper four steps documented) ninth cousin, twice removed

Already in connections/famous-kin.yaml through other ancestors, with a new Hopkins line as an extra: Charles G. Dawes (half, through Damaris; possible), Richard Gere (half, through Damaris; possible), Sarah Palin (through Giles; possible). Bing Crosby is also listed as a Giles descendant by FamousKin, but its line conflicts with the archive's existing Crosby line and is held (see Rejected).

The Knowles find is the closest: if FamousKin's source is right, the chemist's 2x great-grandmother Elizabeth Cole was a niece of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw, and he and Dick share Joseph Cole and Sarah Nickerson. The one weak step (Jesse Cole's parentage) is set out below.

Part 1. The Deyo famous kin

1.1 Dick's side (for every Deyo entry)

Pierre Deyo → Christian Deyo → Jacobus Deyo → Peter Deyo → James Deyoe → Peter J. Deyoe → Jane Maria Deyoe → Susan Marriah Adams → Jennie L. Elliott → Richard Everett Ellingwood → Richard Everett Ellingwood Jr.. Dick is the 10th generation below Pierre and Agathe, the 11th below Chrétien and Jeanne. The upper links are documented in Kingston and New Paltz church records and deeds. The weak link is James Deyoe → Peter Deyo (1739), which is probable, with a conflict (Zachariah called "the oldest son"; Peter's marriage dated 1765, after James's birth), as James Deyoe already records. Nothing found here changes it. That caps every Deyo connection at probable.

1.2 Was Pierre Deyo Chrétien's son? Proven [D]

Three separate records, all checked in the text:

  • Chrétien's will, 1 Feb 1686/7, "as recorded in the Ulster County Surrogate" (H&H; also LeFevre pp. 254-255): "I give to my son Peter Doyou fifty rixdollars, that my son was indebted to me and then to share equally with all of the rest of my children of my estate, and further I do give to my son's son, Christian Doyou, forty pieces of eight and a small gun and then I do hereby give unto my five children all ye rest of my estate".
  • The heirs' agreement, 24 Oct 1687, in French, translated by Frank Hasbrouck (LeFevre pp. 255-256): "to terminate the difference which we might have for the inheritance of our father me abraham assebroucg will receive thirty pieces of eight [dollars] from Mr. Bekman upon that which he owes to our father christian doyeau and me abraham dubois will receive also from said bekman twenty-eight pieces of eight and from my brother-in-law pierre doyeau fifty-five bushels of good winter wheat ... each of us five heirs will pay our part". Signed "pierre doyo", "Marque de Simon lefebvre", "Abraham hasbrouck", "Jean assebrouc", "Abraham duboi". This is also the documentary proof that the four sons-in-law (two Hasbroucks, LeFevre, DuBois) were heirs of Chrétien.
  • The 1681 baptism (H&H, citing Holland Society Year Book 1897, p. 153): "April 17, 1681, (child) Christien: Pieter Dujoo, Angeniet Nickie (parents); witnesses, Christen Dujoo, Gian Wibooe". H&H: "It cannot be doubted that this record proves the fact that Pieter doeJou was a son of the progenitor Christian Deyo".

1.3 Full or half

  • Pierre's lines (Chambers, Fitch, LeFevre): full. Pierre married Agatha Nickel before 21 Jan 1675 (the Mutterstadt certificate, already on Pierre Deyo); Christian (bp. 1681) is named as the son of "Pieter Dujoo, Angeniet Nickie" [D]; Abraham, the eldest son, was born at Hurley on 16 Oct 1676, after that marriage, "as shown by a slip from an old family record in French, in an old Dutch Bible" (LeFevre p. 261) [C]. Agathe as Abraham's mother is [I] from the dates; no other wife of Pierre is known.
  • Chrétien's lines (A. B. Hasbrouck, Snyder, Uptons): full on present evidence. Jeanne Verbeau ("Gian Wibooe") is the only wife known, and H&H read the 1681 record as showing he "was married in his European home and brought with him to this country a wife and several children". No record names the mother of Anna (b. 1644), Pierre (b. c. 1646-50) or Maria (b. c. 1653). Enter as full with spouse: jeanne-verbeau-fl1681, which matches the archive's probable rating of her.

1.4 The shared upper steps

  • Maria Deyo m. Abraham Hasbrouck: Kingston church, "ABRAHAM HASBROOCQ of Calis (Calais) and MARIA DOYO (of) Moeterstat, in Duyslandt (Germany)" (Hoes no. 32, as printed in H&H), dated 17 Nov 1675 in N.Y. Marriages before 1699 [D, published transcript]. She "died 3-27-1741 in her 88th year" (H&H, from LeFevre) [C].
  • Anna Deyo m. Jean Hasbrouck: "The baptism of Abraham, a son of Jean Broecq and Anna Doyo follows in the Kingston records on March 31, 1678" (H&H) [D]. H&H: "1. ANNA b. 1644, d. 5-5-1694 (1) @ 50; m. JEAN HASBROUCK, the Patentee" [C].
  • Abraham Deyo (1676-1725), son of Pierre: "Abraham, the eldest son of Pierre the Patentee, was born at Hurley, October 16, 1676 ... Abraham married Elsie Clearwater in 1702 ... He died in 1725, leaving one son, Abraham (2) and two daughters, Marytje and Wyntje. Marytje married Isaac Freer and Wyntje married Daniel Hasbrouck" (LeFevre p. 261) [C]. H&H B-1 the same. Checked in the text.

1.5 Capt. Washington Irving Chambers, USN (1856-1934)

  • Why notable: "the Father of Naval Aviation"; from 1910 to 1913 the first officer in charge of the Navy's aviation program, who organized Eugene Ely's first takeoff from (1910) and landing on (1911) a ship. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Irving_Chambers
  • Category: science (aviation); public would also do.
  • Line (from Pierre's child down):
    1. Abraham Deyo (1676-1725). LeFevre p. 261 [C]; H&H B-1 [C].
    2. Wyntje Deyo (b. 24 Jan 1708, d. 30 Oct 1787), m. 2 Apr 1734 Daniel Hasbrouck. H&H C-2 [C]; LeFevre p. 261 [C]. Daniel Hasbrouck's will names as executors "My brother-in-law Abraham Doiau and Jacob Hasbrouck, Jr., and my three sons Jonas, Josaphat and David" (K. Hasbrouck, under B-6 Daniel) [D, abstract]. Checked in the text.
    3. Elsje Hasbrouck (bp. 4 Jul 1742), m. 22 Nov 1767 Petrus Smedes Jr. of Hurley. H&H C-2 (e) [C]. Her mother's will, proved 16 Feb 1790: "Unto my daughter Elsje, the wife of Petrus Smedes Jr., all and singular my cloathes and wearing apparel" (K. Hasbrouck, under B-6) [D, abstract]. Checked.
    4. Catharine Smedes (bp. Kingston 9 Oct 1768), m. Benjamin I. Hasbrouck. K. Hasbrouck D-100: "CATHARINE SMEDES, bp. Kingston 10-9-1768, sp. Peter Smedes & Catharine DuBois; m. (D-186) BENJAMIN I. HASBROUCK" [C, from the baptism]. Checked.
    5. Mary (Mary Ann) Hasbrouck (b. 1 Jan 1789, d. 1868), m. Henry P. Chambers (1786-1857). K. Hasbrouck D-186 (Benjamin I., b. 8 Jan 1764, "m. CATHARINE SMEDES ... 581. Mary ... He m. 2nd New Paltz 2-18-1802 (D-96) RACHEL HASBROUCK") and E-581 ("MARY HASBROUCK, b. 1-1-1789; d. 1868; m. HENRY P. CHAMBERS, b. 1786, d. 2-20-1857, son of JACOB CHAMBERS & HANNAH DAVIS") [C]. Mary was born during the first marriage, so Catharine Smedes was her mother [I, from the dates]. Checked.
    6. Jacob Chambers (b. 19 Jan 1812, d. 1882). K. Hasbrouck F-1063: "JACOB CHAMBERS, b. 1-19-1812, bp. Stone Ridge 2-9" [C]. That he is the Kingston boot maker Jacob Chambers (1812-1882), father of the captain, is [I]: same name and year in the same county; Wikipedia's article on the captain says "Through his father, he was a descendant of ... the Hasbrouck family" [C], and its article on Dr. George Chambers (son of Jacob Chambers and Maria Hasbrouck) calls George "a first cousin, once removed" of the captain [C], which fits Henry P. Chambers being the captain's grandfather.
    7. Washington Irving Chambers (b. Kingston 4 Apr 1856), "the only child of a boot maker, Jacob Chambers (1812-1882), and his wife, Margaret Ann (nee Ayres)" (Wikipedia) [C].
  • Shared ancestors: Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol. Full. (He also descends from Chrétien twice, through Maria via Daniel Hasbrouck and through Anna via Benjamin I. Hasbrouck, whose lineage K. Hasbrouck gives as "Isaac-Jacob-Jean"; both are more distant.)
  • Rating: famous side probable (step 6 rests on an identification); whole line probable.
  • Relationship to Dick: Chambers is 7 generations below Pierre, Dick 10: sixth cousin, three times removed.
  • To firm up step 6: the 1860 or 1870 census at Kingston (Jacob Chambers, boot maker, with Washington I.), or Jacob's death record or grave (Wiltwyck Cemetery?).

1.6 Ezra Hasbrouck Fitch (1865-1930)

  • Why notable: bought into David Abercrombie's company in 1900, which became Abercrombie & Fitch; sole owner from 1907 to 1928; credited with bringing mahjong to the United States. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezra_Fitch
  • Category: public.
  • Line:
    1. Abraham Deyo (1676-1725). As above [C].
    2. Wyntje Deyo (1708-1787), m. Daniel Hasbrouck. As above [C/D].
    3. David Hasbrouck (b. 24 May 1740, d. 12 Mar 1806), m. Poughkeepsie 30 Nov 1774 Maria Hoogland. K. Hasbrouck C-29: "b. 5-24-1740 (Bible) bp. Kingston 6-8-1740, sp. Isaac Hasbrouck & Mary Frere; d. 3-12-1806 @ 66, will pro. 4-14-1806 Ulster Sur." [C, Bible and baptism]. His mother's will leaves the residue to "Jonas Hasbrouck, Josaphat Hasbrouck, David Hasbrouck, Benjamin Hasbrouck, Zacharia Hasbrouck and Elsje" [D, abstract]. Checked.
    4. Weyntje Hasbrouck (b. 21 Oct 1787), m. John Rymph. K. Hasbrouck C-29 children ("Weyntje 1787") and D-99 [C]. Checked (the D-99 entry is badly OCR'd; the birth date is from it).
    5. Margaret Rymph (b. 28 May 1812, bp. New Paltz; d. 24 Dec 1880), m. Benjamin Louis Hasbrouck (1813-1885). K. Hasbrouck E-368 and E-594: "MARGARET RYMPH, b. 5-28-:612 [1812], bp. New Paltz 8-6; d. 12-24-1880 (Fairview Cem, Stone Ridge) dau. of JOHN RYMPH & (D-99) WYNTJE HASBROUCK" [C]. The two entries give the marriage as 31 Jan 1839 and 31 Jan 1831; the children were born from 1840, so 1839.
    6. Margaret Wyanna Hasbrouck (b. 15 Oct 1846, d. 6 Oct 1865), m. 21 Dec 1864 Roswell Reed Fitch. K. Hasbrouck F-1100: "m. 12-21-1864 ROSWELL REED FITCH, b. 11-25-1841; d. 1888, son of EZRA FITCH & MARGARET REED. 1357. Ezra Hasbrouck 1865" [C, gravestone at Stone Ridge]. Checked.

  • Shared ancestors: Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol. Full. (Also from Chrétien through Anna, via Benjamin Louis Hasbrouck's line "Lewis-Isaac-Jacob-Jean", and through Maria, via Daniel.)
  • Rating: famous side probable to proven (a single genealogy, but built on baptisms, a Bible and gravestones, and naming the man and his company); whole line probable.
  • Relationship to Dick: 7 generations below Pierre: sixth cousin, three times removed.

    4. Philip (Philippus) Swartwout (killed 1778), m. (1) Antje Wynkoop, (2) Deborah Schoonover. Gumaer pp. 51-52: "Second son, Philip Swartwout, married Antje Wynkoop ... He was killed by the Indians when they invaded this neighborhood ... By a second marriage with Deborah Schoonover, he had one son, Peter Swartwout" [C]. Checked. This is the garbled step: Wikipedia prints him as "Philippus Gumaer".
    5. Peter Swartwout (1766-1817), m. Jannetje Westfall. Gumaer (as above) for his birth to Philip and Deborah [C]; his marriage and dates from Wikipedia only [C].
    9. Margaret Rosette Mather Beckley (1895-1975), m. Frederick Stanley Upton (1890-1986), co-founder of the Upton Machine Co. (Whirlpool). The Political Graveyard: their son David Frederick Upton (b. 1921) was "Son of Frederick Stanley Upton and Margaret (Beckley) Upton" [C]. That she was Carrie Mather's daughter is from Wikipedia only [C].
    10. Stephen Edward "Steve" Upton (1924-2022). The Herald-Palladium (28 Dec 2022): "Upton was the son of Frederick Stanley Upton", "father of U.S. Rep. Fred Upton" [D, obituary].
    11. Fred Upton, "Son of Stephen Edward Upton and Elizabeth B. (Vial) Upton ... grandson of Frederick Stanley Upton" (Political Graveyard) [C]; Wikipedia the same.
  • Shared ancestors: Chrétien Deyo and Jeanne Verbeau. Full on present evidence.
  • Rating: steps 1-4 probable; steps 6 and 9 (James D.'s parents, Margaret Beckley's parents) unsourced; whole line possible.
  • Relationship to Dick: 11 generations below Chrétien, as Dick is: tenth cousin.
  • Rejected second route: Wikipedia also brings Fred down through "Esther Guimar (1730-1800) m. Abraham C. Cuddeback" and Naomi Cuddeback. Gumaer has two Esthers married to Abraham Cuddebacks (Esther Swartwout, p. 46, and Esther Gumaer b. 1729/30, p. 58) and does not connect either to Naomi; this route is not usable as it stands.

1.11 Kate Upton (b. 1992)

  • Why notable: model and actress (Sports Illustrated Swimsuit covers 2012, 2013, 2017). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kate_Upton . Living.
  • Category: stage.
  • Line: as Fred Upton to step 10, then Jefferson Matthew "Jeff" Upton, Steve Upton's son ("his son, Jeff Upton", Herald-Palladium 2022, photo caption) [D, newspaper], then Kate Upton, "the daughter of Shelley (née Davis) ... and Jeff Upton" (Wikipedia) [C]; Fred Upton's niece (Wikipedia, both articles).
  • Shared ancestors, full or half: as Fred.
  • Rating: possible (as Fred).
  • Relationship to Dick: 12 generations below Chrétien: tenth cousin, once removed.

Part 2. Stephen Hopkins's famous descendants

2.1 Dick's side, the wives, and the counts

Stephen Hopkins → Constance Hopkins (m. Nicholas Snow) → Ruth Snow → Joseph Cole → Joseph Cole → Sarah Cole → Hope Holdershaw → Richard Ellingwood → Elijah Ellingwood → Finley Ellingwood → Richard Everett Ellingwood → Richard Everett Ellingwood Jr.. Dick is 11 generations below Stephen and 10 below Nicholas and Constance. The weakest steps on his side are Ruth Snow → Nicholas and Constance (compiled, probable), Sarah Cole = Mrs. Holdershaw (probable) and the archive's probable Richard (1790) and Elijah steps (Ellingwood_Cape_Cod.md). So every Hopkins connection is at best probable.

Wives: Bradford names "Giles, and Constanta, a doughter, both by a former wife; and 2. more by this wife, caled Damaris & Oceanus". The former wife was Mary (Kent per Simon Neal, Mayflower Quarterly 2012-13, as summarised on Wikipedia [C]; the archive's page does not name her). Constance and Giles are full siblings: lines through Giles are full kin; lines through Constance share Nicholas and Constance and are full; lines through Damaris and Deborah (children of Elizabeth) are half kin. Since the archive has no page for Mary, a Giles line would be entered as shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620 (without half), and a Damaris or Deborah line as shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620, half: true; it is worth confirming how kinship.ts reads a shared ancestor whose spouse has no page.

Where the candidates come from: FamousKin lists 89 Stephen Hopkins descendants (44 through Constance, 26 through Giles, 11 through Damaris, 8 through Deborah); NEHGS's Mayflower 400 site lists Taylor Swift (Hopkins and Constance), Avril Lavigne and Sarah Palin (Giles), and Richard Gere (Damaris). I fetched every FamousKin chart (script, polite pace, User-Agent "ellingtree-research/1.0") and checked the early steps of the strongest ones in the Eastham, Harwich and Barnstable records printed in MD and the Harwich VR.

2.2 Robert Treat Paine (1731-1814)

  • Why notable: signer of the Declaration of Independence for Massachusetts; first Attorney General of Massachusetts; justice of its Supreme Judicial Court. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Treat_Paine
  • Category: public.
  • Line (from Constance's child down):
    1. Mary Snow (b. c. 1630, d. 1704), m. c. 1650 Thomas Paine of Eastham. Paine Ancestry pp. 7-8, from Josiah Paine in NEHGR 22:60 (1868): "Thomas Paine ... married about 1650, Mary (daughter of Nicholas and Constance Snow of Eastham, and granddaughter of Stephen Hopkins the Pilgrim ...)" [C]. G. E. Bowman, editor of MD, treats it as established: "the descendants of Thomas Paine of Eastham, who married Mary Snow³ (Constance² Hopkins, Stephen¹)" (MD 15:189) [C]. Their son John wrote in his journal "my honored mother, Mary Paine, departed this life" (1704) (Paine Ancestry p. 8) [D, as quoted]. Checked in the text. Nicholas Snow's will does not name his daughters, so Mary's parentage, like Ruth's, rests on the compilers.
    2. James Paine (b. Eastham 6 Jul 1665), m. 9 Apr 1691 Bethiah Thacher. Thomas Paine's will, 12 May 1705 (Barnstable Probate 3:360): the residue "to be Equally Divided to and among my Children ; viz : Sam11 : Paine : Thomas Paine : Elisha Paine : John Paine : Nicholas Paine : James Paine : Joseph Paine : Dorcas Vickerie" (MD 15:189-190) [D, abstract]; Paine Ancestry p. 11: "James Paine, the sixth son of Thomas, was born at Eastham, July 6, 1665 ... April 9, 1691 ... he married Bethiah Thacher" [C]. Checked.
    3. Rev. Thomas Paine (b. Barnstable 9 Apr 1694, d. 1757), m. 21 Apr 1721 Eunice Treat. Paine Ancestry p. 13 (children of James, "all born at Barnstable": "Thomas Paine, b. 9 April, 1694") and the memoir following, p. 16: "he was married by the Rev. Peter Thacher of the North Church to Eunice Treat of Boston" [C]. Checked.
    4. Robert Treat Paine: "In 1731, March 11, his son Robert Treat was born, in Boston" (Paine Ancestry p. 17, memoir of Rev. Thomas) [C]. Checked.
  • Shared ancestors: Nicholas Snow and Constance Hopkins. Full (Mary and Ruth Snow were sisters).
  • Rating: famous side probable (the Paine steps documented, Mary's parentage compiled but standard); whole line probable.
  • Relationship to Dick: 4 generations below Constance, Dick 10: third cousin, six times removed.

2.3 William Standish Knowles (1917-2012)

  • Why notable: chemist at Monsanto; Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2001 (with Noyori and Sharpless) for chirally catalysed hydrogenation, used to make L-DOPA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Standish_Knowles ; https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/chemistry/2001/knowles/facts/
  • Category: science.
  • Line (from the shared couple's child down):
    1. Jesse Cole (b. 11 Feb 1755 per FamousKin; d. 1803, Orleans), m. Eastham 28 Jan 1773 Bethiah Young. The weak step. FamousKin makes him a son of Joseph Cole Jr. and Sarah Nickerson, citing MD 33:134 (births of his children), MD 48:51 (1998) and MD 56:139 (2007) [C]; none of these volumes is online here. Against it: The Nickerson Family (leaf 97) lists the children of Joseph and Sarah (Nickerson) Cole as Mary and Sarah (twins, 1738), Reuben (1742/3), Abiel (1745) and Henry (1748), no Jesse; and the Eastham birth index for 1721-1760 has only two Jesse Coles, born 1732 (to Jonathan and Hope) and 1735 (to Timothy and Martha), no 1755 birth. For it: his first son was named Joseph (below) [I]; the Nickerson list ends twenty years before Sarah's childbearing would have ended, and the 2007 MD article may be the proof. The couple is real: the First Church of Orleans admitted "Bethiah, Wife of Jesse Cole" on 3 June 1780 (MD 15:14) [D], in the same weeks as "Hannah, Wife of Reuben Cole", and that autumn "Hannah Wife of Abiel Cole" and "Mary, wife of Davd Snow" (Reuben, Abiel and Mary were children of Joseph Jr. and Sarah, Mary having married David Snow) [D]; suggestive of one family, no more [I].
    2. Elizabeth Cole (b. 1787), m. Beriah Doane. Eastham birth index 1761-1800: "Elizabeth Jesse & Bethia 1787 B326", with Joseph (1776), Sarah (1778) and Jesse (1781) [D, index]. Doane genealogy (1902) no. 288: "BERIAH DOANE ... born at Eastham, Mass., Nov. 25, 1782 ... He married at Orleans, Dec. 21, 1809 (?), Elizabeth Cole", with a son "Jesse C." [C]. FamousKin cites MD 48:51 for "Marriage of Beriah Doane and probable daughter Elizabeth Cole" [C]. Checked (index and Doane).
    3. Jedidah Doane (b. 5 Feb 1821), m. 14 Nov 1845 Joseph M. Knowles. Doane no. 288 (ii): "Jedidah, b. Feb. 5, 1821; m. Nov. 14, 1845, Joseph, s. of James H. Knowles of Eastham" [C, from Orleans records]. Checked.
    4. Joseph Frank Knowles, m. Angeline W. Bourne. FamousKin only [C].
    5. George Bourne Knowles, m. Alice Pierce Tiffany. FamousKin only [C].
    6. William Standish Knowles, born at Taunton (Wikipedia) [C]; his parents not checked.
  • Shared ancestors: Joseph Cole and Sarah Nickerson, if step 1 holds. Full. (Even if it fails, the FamousKin chain makes him a descendant of Constance through Ruth Snow and John Cole, the family's own line.) He would also be kin through Sarah (Bassett) Nickerson and the Bassetts.
  • Rating: possible. One step (Jesse's parents) unseen and contradicted by the omission in the Nickerson book; the bottom two steps compiled only.
  • Relationship to Dick: 6 generations below Joseph Cole Jr. and Sarah Nickerson, Dick 7: fifth cousin, once removed. Through Stephen Hopkins he is the 8th great-grandson (FamousKin).
  • To settle: MD 56:139 (2007) and MD 33:134; Joseph Cole Jr.'s Barnstable probate (d. 1795), which would name his children (it is already on the Cape Cod report's list for proving Sarah Cole).

2.4 Norman Rockwell (1894-1978)

  • Why notable: painter and illustrator; 323 Saturday Evening Post covers; the Four Freedoms. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Rockwell
  • Category: stage (the arts; there is no art category).
  • Line (from Giles down):
    1. Stephen Hopkins (b. Sept 1642, d. Harwich 1718), m. Eastham 23 May 1667 Mary Merrick. Hawes pp. 19-21, from Eastham records (MD 7:16): "Stephen, b. in September, 1642"; children "Samuel, b. the middle of March, 1682-3 ... Joseph, b. in 1688" [C, citing records]. Checked.
    2. Samuel Hopkins (b. 1682/3), m. Lydia (Rich per FamousKin). Harwich VR [p.41]: "Reliance Hopkins daughter to samuel and Lidea Hopkins was born November 17th : 1709" [D]. That this Samuel is Stephen's son is [C/I] (Hawes; FamousKin). Checked.
    3. Reliance Hopkins (b. 17 Nov 1709), m. 19 June 1735 David Crosby. Harwich VR [p.224]: "June the 19 day 1735 then David Crosby and Reliance hopkins both of harwich ware married" [D]. Checked.
    4. Abner Crosby (b. 25 Dec 1744), m. Ruth Foster. Harwich VR [p.132]: "Abner Crosbe Sone of David & Relianc Crosbe his Wife borne Decembr 25th 1744" [D]. Checked.
    5. Thomas Crosby, m. Hannah Snow. FamousKin only [C].
    6. Esther Crosby, m. Peter Waring. FamousKin only [C].
    7. Jarvis A. Waring, m. Nancy Odell Boyce. FamousKin [C]; named as Phebe's father in step 8.
    8. Phebe Boyce Waring (b. 1841), m. Yonkers 22 Oct 1862 John William Rockwell. Boughton, Genealogy of the Families of John Rockwell (1903), no. 3048: "married at Yonkers, N. Y., Oct. 22, 1862, Phebe Boyce Waring, daughter of Jarvis A. and Nancy Odell Boyce Waring, of Yonkers" [C]. Checked.
    9. Jarvis Waring Rockwell (b. Yonkers 10 Dec 1867), m. 22 Jul 1891 Anne M. Hill. Boughton no. 5322 [C]. Checked.
    10. Norman Rockwell, born 1894 "to Jarvis Waring Rockwell and Anne Mary 'Nancy' (née Hill) Rockwell" (Wikipedia, citing Boughton and Roberts and Dearborn, Notable Kin, 1998, p. 28) [C].
  • Shared ancestors: Stephen Hopkins (with his first wife, Mary; no page). Full.
  • Rating: steps 1-4 and 8-10 sourced; steps 5-7 (Crosby, Waring) FamousKin only; whole line possible.
  • Relationship to Dick: 11 generations below Stephen, as Dick: tenth cousin.

2.5 Vannevar Bush (1890-1974)

  • Shared ancestors: Nicholas Snow and Constance Hopkins. Full.
  • Rating: possible (top three steps documented; the rest compiled by FamousKin and, per NEHGS, Roberts).
  • Relationship to Dick: 12 generations below Constance: ninth cousin, twice removed.
  • Note: through Jane Prence she also descends from Gov. Thomas Prence (Thomas Prence), Frances Holbrook's ancestor, so she would also be a cousin on Frances's side (half, through Prence's second wife, if the archive's Prence lines are through another wife; not worked out here).

2.9 Extra Hopkins lines for people already in famous-kin.yaml

Charles G. Dawes (1865-1951) — already there through John Woodbury (half, probable).

  • New line, half (through Damaris, Elizabeth's daughter), all [C] from FamousKin: Damaris Hopkins (m. Jacob Cooke) → Caleb Cooke → Anne Cooke (m. James Johnson) → Caleb Johnson (m. Mary Cooke) → Elizabeth Johnson (m. Rev. Aaron Gates) → Aaron Gates (m. Ruth Beman) → Beman Gates (m. Betsey Sibyl Shipman) → Mary Beman Gates (m. Rufus R. Dawes) → Charles Gates Dawes. It meets the archive's existing line at Betsey Sibyl Shipman and Mary Beman Gates, which agrees. The Gates volume of Ferris, Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines (1931), already cited for Dawes, should cover the Gates-Johnson-Cooke steps; not seen.
  • shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620, half: true. Possible. 9 generations below Stephen: half eighth cousin, twice removed.

Richard Gere (b. 1949) — already there through three lines.

  • New line, half (through Damaris), [C] FamousKin, and NEHGS lists "Stephen Hopkins, Elizabeth Fisher ... Jacob Cooke, Francis Cooke" among his Mayflower ancestors [C]: Damaris Hopkins (m. Jacob Cooke) → Jacob Cooke (m. Lydia Miller) → Margaret Cooke (m. Simon Lazell) → Sarah Lazell (m. Elkanah Elmes) → Ruth Elmes (m. Consider Fuller) → Lucinda Fuller (1792-1880) → Sarah E. Tewksbury → George Lane Gere → Albert William Gere → Homer George Gere → Richard Gere. It meets the archive's existing lines at Consider Fuller and Lucinda Fuller and agrees with them.
  • shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620, half: true. Possible. 11 generations below Stephen: half tenth cousin.

Sarah Palin (b. 1964) — already there through Jeremiah Howes and John Howland.

  • New line, full (through Giles), [C] FamousKin, which itself marks one step "Probable"; MayflowerHistory.com gives the same chain: Giles → Deborah Hopkins (m. Eastham 27 Jul 1668 Josiah Cooke, "not the son of Francis Cooke of the Mayflower", Hawes p. 19 [C, from Eastham records]) → Deborah Cooke (m. Moses Godfrey) → George Godfrey (m. Mercy Knowles) → Knowles Godfrey (the "probable" step) → Benjamin Godfrey → James Ryder Godfrey → Augusta Lodema Godfrey → Cora Godfrey Strong → Helen Louise Gower (1910-1985) → Sally Sheeran → Sarah Palin. It meets the archive's lines at Helen Louise Gower.
  • shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620. Possible. 13 generations below Stephen: tenth cousin, twice removed.

Rejected or unverifiable

Deyo

  • None of the seven is dropped. Snyder and the Uptons stay at possible for want of sources for their lower steps, not because anything contradicts them.
  • Fred Upton's second route through the Cuddebacks (Wikipedia): not usable; Gumaer has two Esthers married to Abraham Cuddebacks and connects neither to Naomi Cuddeback.
  • The other New Paltz names on Wikipedia's "Hasbrouck family" list (Josiah Hasbrouck, Lydia Sayer Hasbrouck, William C. Hasbrouck, Gen. George H. Sharpe, Darren O'Day and others) were not worked. K. Hasbrouck and H&H, now both open on archive.org, would carry most of them.

Hopkins

  • Bing Crosby (FamousKin, through Giles: Abigail Hopkins → Ruth Merrick → Hannah Sears → Nathaniel Foster → Mary Foster → Mary Lincoln m. Nathaniel Crosby → Nathaniel Crosby → "Harry Lincoln Crosby" → Bing): held, conflicts with the archive. famous-kin.yaml has his great-grandfather Nathaniel Crosby (1810-1856) as son of Ruby Foster and his father as Harry Lowe Crosby (as Wikipedia has it); FamousKin makes Nathaniel's mother Mary Lincoln and the father "Harry Lincoln". One of the two is wrong; do not add until settled.
  • Col. Robert Gould Shaw (FamousKin, through Mary Snow → John Paine (m. Bennett Freeman) → William Paine → Sarah Paine m. Thomas Sturgis → Russell Sturgis → Nathaniel Russell Sturgis → Sarah Blake Sturgis → Shaw): unverified. John Paine and his marriage to "Bennett, dau. of John and Mercy (Prence) Freeman" are in Paine Ancestry p. 10, but no Sturgis genealogy is online to check the rest. Worth doing: it would make Shaw a cousin of Frances too (through John Freeman and Thomas Prence).
  • John Howard Payne (author of "Home, Sweet Home"): Paine Ancestry p. 10 says of John Paine (b. 1660/1), son of Thomas and Mary (Snow) Paine, "John Howard Payne ... was a great grandson". The two generations between are not given. A good lead for the writers category.
  • S. Dillon Ripley (Smithsonian), through Mark Snow → Thomas Snow (b. 1668, MD 7:14 [D]) → Josiah Snow ...: only the first two steps checkable; left aside.
  • Half kin through Deborah (Ring) and Damaris (Cooke) not worked: Levi P. Morton (Vice President), Gen. Leonard Wood, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Charles Dudley Warner, Lavinia Warren, Geena Davis and others on FamousKin's list. The brief put Constance and Giles first.
  • Other FamousKin names through Constance or Giles, unchecked beyond the chart and so not offered: Thomas Pynchon, Margaret Atwood, Tennessee Williams, Annie Proulx, William R. Day, Hoyt Vandenberg, Dan Quayle, Orrin Hatch, Howard Dean, Andrew Card, Jon Meacham, Brewster Kahle, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley, Kyra Sedgwick, Matthew Perry, Paul and A. Bartlett Giamatti, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Ruth Gordon and others. Several have FamousKin's own "Probable" flag on a step (e.g. Paul Walker, Don Winslow).
  • Avril Lavigne and Christopher Lloyd (Giles, per the NEHGS site and a search summary): not on FamousKin's Hopkins list; no line found.
  • Patricia Clapp (author of Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth): Wikipedia says she was a descendant; no line given.
  • No US president was found among Stephen Hopkins's descendants in FamousKin, MayflowerHistory.com or the NEHGS list; two Vice Presidents are (Dawes, half; Quayle, unchecked; Morton, half, unchecked).

Notes for the archive

  • Stephen Hopkins names only Elizabeth as a wife. The former wife, mother of Constance and Giles, is Mary (Kent, per Simon Neal in the Mayflower Quarterly, 2012-13; [C] here). Worth a line on the page so that half and full kin read correctly.
  • Chrétien Deyo: the 1687 heirs' agreement (LeFevre pp. 255-256) is the documentary proof that his daughters married Abraham Hasbrouck, Jean Hasbrouck, Simon LeFevre and Abraham DuBois; the page cites it only for the estate.
  • K. Hasbrouck's The Hasbrouck Family in America (1961), not used before, is open on archive.org and carries most Hasbrouck-descended lines with baptisms, Bibles and gravestones; the Elting study (1955) and the New Paltz baptisms 1817-1882 (1954) are open too.
  • Through Mark Snow's second wife Jane Prence, Taylor Swift (and S. Dillon Ripley) also descend from Thomas Prence, Frances's ancestor; Robert Gould Shaw does through Bennett Freeman.

  22. ## Summary
  23. **Part 1, the Deyo kin.** Every famous person's side now has a source other than Wikipedia for most
  24. steps, chiefly Kenneth Hasbrouck's 1961 genealogy, LeFevre, the Deyo genealogy, the Elting study and
  25. the New Paltz church baptisms. Whatever the famous side, **no Deyo connection can rise above
  26. probable**, because Dick's own Deyo line has one compiled step with a conflict (James Deyoe to Peter
  27. Deyo of 1739; see `james-deyoe-1764`).
  28. | Famous person | Shared ancestors | Famous side | Whole line | Relationship to Dick |
  29. |---|---|---|---|---|
  30. | Capt. Washington Irving Chambers | Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol | probable (one identification [I]) | **probable** | sixth cousin, three times removed |
  31. | Ezra H. Fitch | Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol | probable to proven | **probable** | sixth cousin, three times removed |
  32. | Rep. Jay LeFevre | Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol | proven to probable | **probable** | seventh cousin, twice removed |
  33. | Abraham Bruyn Hasbrouck | Chrétien Deyo (and Jeanne Verbeau) | probable to proven | **probable** | fourth cousin, six times removed |
  34. | Laurence H. Snyder | Chrétien Deyo (and Jeanne Verbeau) | top half probable, lower three steps Wikipedia only | **possible** | eighth cousin, twice removed |
  35. | Fred Upton | Chrétien Deyo (and Jeanne Verbeau) | two unsourced steps; one garbled step corrected | **possible** | tenth cousin |
  36. | Kate Upton | as Fred | as Fred | **possible** | tenth cousin, once removed |
  37. None is dropped. **Pierre Deyo was Chrétien's son: proven** (his father's will, the heirs' agreement of
  38. 1687 and the 1681 baptism). The Pierre lines are **full** kin (Pierre and Agathe Nickol). The Chrétien
  39. lines are full on present evidence: Jeanne Verbeau is his only known wife, but no record names the
  40. mother of any of his children.
  41. The garbled Upton step: Wikipedia's "Philippus Gumaer (1727-1778)" was **Philip (Philippus)
  42. Swartwout**, son of Maj. James (Jacobus) Swartwout and Anna Gumaer, and his son Peter was by his second
  43. wife, Deborah Schoonover (Gumaer 1890). A second garble, in Wikipedia's tree for Jay LeFevre: "Maria
  44. DuBois (1748-1817) m. Nathaniel LeFevre" should be **Maria (Mary) Deyo**, daughter of Abraham Deyo Jr.
  45. and Elizabeth DuBois.
  46. **Part 2, Stephen Hopkins.** Dick is 11 generations below Stephen Hopkins and 10 below Nicholas Snow and
  47. Constance Hopkins. Found, with the most checkable lines first:
  48. | Famous person | Through | Full or half | Whole line | Relationship to Dick |
  49. |---|---|---|---|---|
  50. | Robert Treat Paine (signer of the Declaration) | Constance (Mary Snow) | full | **probable** | third cousin, six times removed |
  51. | William Standish Knowles (Nobel Prize in Chemistry, 2001) | Constance, via Dick's own Joseph Cole Jr. and Sarah Nickerson | full | **possible** (one step) | fifth cousin, once removed |
  52. | Norman Rockwell | Giles | full | **possible** (upper half documented) | tenth cousin |
  53. | Vannevar Bush | Giles | full | **possible** | eighth cousin, twice removed |
  54. | Harry Hopkins | Giles | full | **possible** | eighth cousin, twice removed |
  55. | Allison Janney | Constance (Mark Snow) | full | **possible** (upper four steps documented) | ninth cousin, twice removed |
  56. | Taylor Swift | Constance (Mark Snow and Jane Prence) | full | **possible** (upper four steps documented) | ninth cousin, twice removed |
  57. Already in `connections/famous-kin.yaml` through other ancestors, with a new Hopkins line as an extra:
  58. **Charles G. Dawes** (half, through Damaris; possible), **Richard Gere** (half, through Damaris;
  59. possible), **Sarah Palin** (through Giles; possible). **Bing Crosby** is also listed as a Giles
  60. descendant by FamousKin, but its line conflicts with the archive's existing Crosby line and is held
  61. (see Rejected).
  62. The Knowles find is the closest: if FamousKin's source is right, the chemist's 2x great-grandmother
  63. Elizabeth Cole was a niece of Sarah (Cole) Holdershaw, and he and Dick share `joseph-cole-1718` and
  64. `sarah-nickerson-fl1737`. The one weak step (Jesse Cole's parentage) is set out below.
  65. ---
  66. ## Part 1. The Deyo famous kin
  67. ### 1.1 Dick's side (for every Deyo entry)
  68. `pierre-deyo-fl1677` → `christian-deyo-1681` → `jacobus-deyo-1704` → `peter-deyo-1739` →
  69. `james-deyoe-1764` → `peter-deyoe-1787` → `jane-deyoe-1809` → `susan-adams-1837` → `jennie-elliott-1857`
  70. → `richard-ellingwood-1895` → `richard-ellingwood-1929`. Dick is the **10th generation below Pierre
  71. and Agathe**, the **11th below Chrétien and Jeanne**. The upper links are documented in Kingston and
  72. New Paltz church records and deeds. The weak link is James Deyoe → Peter Deyo (1739), which is
  73. **probable**, with a conflict (Zachariah called "the oldest son"; Peter's marriage dated 1765, after
  74. James's birth), as `james-deyoe-1764` already records. Nothing found here changes it. **That caps every
  75. Deyo connection at probable.**
  76. ### 1.2 Was Pierre Deyo Chrétien's son? **Proven** [D]
  77. Three separate records, all checked in the text:
  78. - **Chrétien's will**, 1 Feb 1686/7, "as recorded in the Ulster County Surrogate" (H&H; also LeFevre
  79. pp. 254-255): "I give to my son Peter Doyou fifty rixdollars, that my son was indebted to me and then
  80. to share equally with all of the rest of my children of my estate, and further I do give to my son's
  81. son, Christian Doyou, forty pieces of eight and a small gun and then I do hereby give unto my five
  82. children all ye rest of my estate".
  83. - **The heirs' agreement**, 24 Oct 1687, in French, translated by Frank Hasbrouck (LeFevre pp.
  84. 255-256): "to terminate the difference which we might have for the inheritance of our father me
  85. abraham assebroucg will receive thirty pieces of eight [dollars] from Mr. Bekman upon that which he
  86. owes to our father christian doyeau and me abraham dubois will receive also from said bekman
  87. twenty-eight pieces of eight and from my brother-in-law pierre doyeau fifty-five bushels of good
  88. winter wheat ... each of us five heirs will pay our part". Signed "pierre doyo", "Marque de Simon
  89. lefebvre", "Abraham hasbrouck", "Jean assebrouc", "Abraham duboi". This is also the documentary proof
  90. that the four sons-in-law (two Hasbroucks, LeFevre, DuBois) were heirs of Chrétien.
  91. - **The 1681 baptism** (H&H, citing Holland Society Year Book 1897, p. 153): "April 17, 1681, (child)
  92. Christien: Pieter Dujoo, Angeniet Nickie (parents); witnesses, Christen Dujoo, Gian Wibooe". H&H:
  93. "It cannot be doubted that this record proves the fact that Pieter doeJou was a son of the progenitor
  94. Christian Deyo".
  95. ### 1.3 Full or half
  96. - **Pierre's lines (Chambers, Fitch, LeFevre): full.** Pierre married Agatha Nickel before 21 Jan 1675
  97. (the Mutterstadt certificate, already on `pierre-deyo-fl1677`); Christian (bp. 1681) is named as the
  98. son of "Pieter Dujoo, Angeniet Nickie" [D]; Abraham, the eldest son, was born at Hurley on 16 Oct 1676,
  99. after that marriage, "as shown by a slip from an old family record in French, in an old Dutch Bible"
  100. (LeFevre p. 261) [C]. Agathe as Abraham's mother is [I] from the dates; no other wife of Pierre is known.
  101. - **Chrétien's lines (A. B. Hasbrouck, Snyder, Uptons): full on present evidence.** Jeanne Verbeau
  102. ("Gian Wibooe") is the only wife known, and H&H read the 1681 record as showing he "was married in his
  103. European home and brought with him to this country a wife and several children". No record names the
  104. mother of Anna (b. 1644), Pierre (b. c. 1646-50) or Maria (b. c. 1653). Enter as full with
  105. `spouse: jeanne-verbeau-fl1681`, which matches the archive's probable rating of her.
  106. ### 1.4 The shared upper steps
  107. - **Maria Deyo m. Abraham Hasbrouck**: Kingston church, "ABRAHAM HASBROOCQ of Calis (Calais) and MARIA
  108. DOYO (of) Moeterstat, in Duyslandt (Germany)" (Hoes no. 32, as printed in H&H), dated 17 Nov 1675 in
  109. *N.Y. Marriages before 1699* [D, published transcript]. She "died 3-27-1741 in her 88th year" (H&H,
  110. from LeFevre) [C].
  111. - **Anna Deyo m. Jean Hasbrouck**: "The baptism of Abraham, a son of Jean Broecq and Anna Doyo follows in
  112. the Kingston records on March 31, 1678" (H&H) [D]. H&H: "1. ANNA b. 1644, d. 5-5-1694 (1) @ 50; m. JEAN
  113. HASBROUCK, the Patentee" [C].
  114. - **Abraham Deyo (1676-1725)**, son of Pierre: "Abraham, the eldest son of Pierre the Patentee, was born
  115. at Hurley, October 16, 1676 ... Abraham married Elsie Clearwater in 1702 ... He died in 1725, leaving one
  116. son, Abraham (2) and two daughters, Marytje and Wyntje. Marytje married Isaac Freer and Wyntje married
  117. Daniel Hasbrouck" (LeFevre p. 261) [C]. H&H B-1 the same. Checked in the text.
  118. ### 1.5 Capt. Washington Irving Chambers, USN (1856-1934)
  119. - **Why notable:** "the Father of Naval Aviation"; from 1910 to 1913 the first officer in charge of the
  120. Navy's aviation program, who organized Eugene Ely's first takeoff from (1910) and landing on (1911) a
  121. ship. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washington_Irving_Chambers
  122. - **Category:** science (aviation); public would also do.
  123. - **Line** (from Pierre's child down):
  124. 1. **Abraham Deyo** (1676-1725). LeFevre p. 261 [C]; H&H B-1 [C].
  125. 2. **Wyntje Deyo** (b. 24 Jan 1708, d. 30 Oct 1787), m. 2 Apr 1734 Daniel Hasbrouck. H&H C-2 [C];
  126. LeFevre p. 261 [C]. Daniel Hasbrouck's will names as executors "My brother-in-law Abraham Doiau and
  127. Jacob Hasbrouck, Jr., and my three sons Jonas, Josaphat and David" (K. Hasbrouck, under B-6 Daniel)
  128. [D, abstract]. Checked in the text.
  129. 3. **Elsje Hasbrouck** (bp. 4 Jul 1742), m. 22 Nov 1767 Petrus Smedes Jr. of Hurley. H&H C-2 (e) [C].
  130. Her mother's will, proved 16 Feb 1790: "Unto my daughter Elsje, the wife of Petrus Smedes Jr., all
  131. and singular my cloathes and wearing apparel" (K. Hasbrouck, under B-6) [D, abstract]. Checked.
  132. 4. **Catharine Smedes** (bp. Kingston 9 Oct 1768), m. Benjamin I. Hasbrouck. K. Hasbrouck D-100:
  133. "CATHARINE SMEDES, bp. Kingston 10-9-1768, sp. Peter Smedes & Catharine DuBois; m. (D-186) BENJAMIN I.
  134. HASBROUCK" [C, from the baptism]. Checked.
  135. 5. **Mary (Mary Ann) Hasbrouck** (b. 1 Jan 1789, d. 1868), m. Henry P. Chambers (1786-1857). K.
  136. Hasbrouck D-186 (Benjamin I., b. 8 Jan 1764, "m. CATHARINE SMEDES ... 581. Mary ... He m. 2nd New
  137. Paltz 2-18-1802 (D-96) RACHEL HASBROUCK") and E-581 ("MARY HASBROUCK, b. 1-1-1789; d. 1868; m.
  138. HENRY P. CHAMBERS, b. 1786, d. 2-20-1857, son of JACOB CHAMBERS & HANNAH DAVIS") [C]. Mary was born
  139. during the first marriage, so Catharine Smedes was her mother [I, from the dates]. Checked.
  140. 6. **Jacob Chambers** (b. 19 Jan 1812, d. 1882). K. Hasbrouck F-1063: "JACOB CHAMBERS, b. 1-19-1812,
  141. bp. Stone Ridge 2-9" [C]. That he is the Kingston boot maker Jacob Chambers (1812-1882), father of
  142. the captain, is **[I]**: same name and year in the same county; Wikipedia's article on the captain
  143. says "Through his father, he was a descendant of ... the Hasbrouck family" [C], and its article on
  144. Dr. George Chambers (son of Jacob Chambers and Maria Hasbrouck) calls George "a first cousin, once
  145. removed" of the captain [C], which fits Henry P. Chambers being the captain's grandfather.
  146. 7. **Washington Irving Chambers** (b. Kingston 4 Apr 1856), "the only child of a boot maker, Jacob
  147. Chambers (1812-1882), and his wife, Margaret Ann (nee Ayres)" (Wikipedia) [C].
  148. - **Shared ancestors:** `pierre-deyo-fl1677` and `agathe-nickol-fl1675`. Full. (He also descends from
  149. Chrétien twice, through Maria via Daniel Hasbrouck and through Anna via Benjamin I. Hasbrouck, whose
  150. lineage K. Hasbrouck gives as "Isaac-Jacob-Jean"; both are more distant.)
  151. - **Rating:** famous side probable (step 6 rests on an identification); **whole line probable**.
  152. - **Relationship to Dick:** Chambers is 7 generations below Pierre, Dick 10: **sixth cousin, three times
  153. removed**.
  154. - To firm up step 6: the 1860 or 1870 census at Kingston (Jacob Chambers, boot maker, with
  155. Washington I.), or Jacob's death record or grave (Wiltwyck Cemetery?).
  156. ### 1.6 Ezra Hasbrouck Fitch (1865-1930)
  157. - **Why notable:** bought into David Abercrombie's company in 1900, which became Abercrombie & Fitch;
  158. sole owner from 1907 to 1928; credited with bringing mahjong to the United States.
  159. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezra_Fitch
  160. - **Category:** public.
  161. - **Line:**
  162. 1. **Abraham Deyo** (1676-1725). As above [C].
  163. 2. **Wyntje Deyo** (1708-1787), m. Daniel Hasbrouck. As above [C/D].
  164. 3. **David Hasbrouck** (b. 24 May 1740, d. 12 Mar 1806), m. Poughkeepsie 30 Nov 1774 Maria Hoogland.
  165. K. Hasbrouck C-29: "b. 5-24-1740 (Bible) bp. Kingston 6-8-1740, sp. Isaac Hasbrouck & Mary Frere;
  166. d. 3-12-1806 @ 66, will pro. 4-14-1806 Ulster Sur." [C, Bible and baptism]. His mother's will leaves
  167. the residue to "Jonas Hasbrouck, Josaphat Hasbrouck, David Hasbrouck, Benjamin Hasbrouck, Zacharia
  168. Hasbrouck and Elsje" [D, abstract]. Checked.
  169. 4. **Weyntje Hasbrouck** (b. 21 Oct 1787), m. John Rymph. K. Hasbrouck C-29 children ("Weyntje 1787")
  170. and D-99 [C]. Checked (the D-99 entry is badly OCR'd; the birth date is from it).
  171. 5. **Margaret Rymph** (b. 28 May 1812, bp. New Paltz; d. 24 Dec 1880), m. Benjamin Louis Hasbrouck
  172. (1813-1885). K. Hasbrouck E-368 and E-594: "MARGARET RYMPH, b. 5-28-:612 [1812], bp. New Paltz 8-6;
  173. d. 12-24-1880 (Fairview Cem, Stone Ridge) dau. of JOHN RYMPH & (D-99) WYNTJE HASBROUCK" [C]. The two
  174. entries give the marriage as 31 Jan 1839 and 31 Jan 1831; the children were born from 1840, so 1839.
  175. 6. **Margaret Wyanna Hasbrouck** (b. 15 Oct 1846, d. 6 Oct 1865), m. 21 Dec 1864 Roswell Reed Fitch. K.
  176. Hasbrouck F-1100: "m. 12-21-1864 ROSWELL REED FITCH, b. 11-25-1841; d. 1888, son of EZRA FITCH &
  177. MARGARET REED. 1357. Ezra Hasbrouck 1865" [C, gravestone at Stone Ridge]. Checked.
  178. 7. **Ezra Hasbrouck Fitch**. K. Hasbrouck G-1357: "b. 9-21-1865; d. 6-16-193[0]; m. 3-2-1897 SARA
  179. STURGES. Practised law in Kingston. Became president of Abercrombie & Fitch." [C]. Wikipedia agrees
  180. (mother died 15 days after his birth). Checked.
  181. - **Shared ancestors:** `pierre-deyo-fl1677` and `agathe-nickol-fl1675`. Full. (Also from Chrétien through
  182. Anna, via Benjamin Louis Hasbrouck's line "Lewis-Isaac-Jacob-Jean", and through Maria, via Daniel.)
  183. - **Rating:** famous side probable to proven (a single genealogy, but built on baptisms, a Bible and
  184. gravestones, and naming the man and his company); **whole line probable**.
  185. - **Relationship to Dick:** 7 generations below Pierre: **sixth cousin, three times removed**.
  186. ### 1.7 Jay LeFevre (1893-1970)
  187. - **Why notable:** US Representative from New York, 1943-1951.
  188. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jay_Le_Fevre
  189. - **Category:** public.
  190. - **Line:**

  192. 2. **Abraham Deyo Jr.** (b. 16 Oct 1710), m. 30 Oct 1735 Elizabeth DuBois. H&H C-3 [C]; LeFevre pp.
  193. 261-263 [C].
  194. 3. **Maria (Mary, Marie) Deyo** (bp. 27 Nov 1748, d. 29 Aug 1817), m. 9 Mar 1769 Nathaniel LeFevre of
  195. Kettleborough. LeFevre p. 263: Abraham (2) "left a family of five sons—Abraham, Daniel, Simeon,

  326. ## Part 2. Stephen Hopkins's famous descendants
  327. ### 2.1 Dick's side, the wives, and the counts
  328. `stephen-hopkins-fl1620` → `constance-hopkins-d1677` (m. `nicholas-snow-d1676`) → `ruth-snow-d1717` →
  329. `joseph-cole-1677` → `joseph-cole-1718` → `sarah-cole-1738` → `hope-holdershaw-1768` →
  330. `richard-ellingwood-1790` → `elijah-ellingwood-1819` → `finley-ellingwood-1852` → `richard-ellingwood-1895`
  331. → `richard-ellingwood-1929`. **Dick is 11 generations below Stephen and 10 below Nicholas and Constance.**
  332. The weakest steps on his side are Ruth Snow → Nicholas and Constance (compiled, probable), Sarah Cole =
  333. Mrs. Holdershaw (probable) and the archive's probable Richard (1790) and Elijah steps
  334. (`Ellingwood_Cape_Cod.md`). **So every Hopkins connection is at best probable.**
  335. Wives: Bradford names "Giles, and Constanta, a doughter, both by a former wife; and 2. more by this wife,
  336. caled Damaris & Oceanus". The former wife was Mary (Kent per Simon Neal, *Mayflower Quarterly* 2012-13,
  337. as summarised on Wikipedia [C]; the archive's page does not name her). Constance and Giles are full
  338. siblings: **lines through Giles are full kin**; lines through Constance share Nicholas and Constance and
  339. are full; **lines through Damaris and Deborah (children of Elizabeth) are half kin.** Since the archive
  340. has no page for Mary, a Giles line would be entered as `shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620` (without
  341. `half`), and a Damaris or Deborah line as `shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620`, `half: true`; it is worth
  342. confirming how `kinship.ts` reads a shared ancestor whose spouse has no page.
  343. Where the candidates come from: FamousKin lists 89 Stephen Hopkins descendants (44 through Constance, 26
  344. through Giles, 11 through Damaris, 8 through Deborah); NEHGS's Mayflower 400 site lists Taylor Swift
  345. (Hopkins and Constance), Avril Lavigne and Sarah Palin (Giles), and Richard Gere (Damaris). I fetched every
  346. FamousKin chart (script, polite pace, User-Agent "ellingtree-research/1.0") and checked the early steps of
  347. the strongest ones in the Eastham, Harwich and Barnstable records printed in MD and the Harwich VR.
  348. ### 2.2 Robert Treat Paine (1731-1814)
  349. - **Why notable:** signer of the Declaration of Independence for Massachusetts; first Attorney General of
  350. Massachusetts; justice of its Supreme Judicial Court. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Treat_Paine
  351. - **Category:** public.
  352. - **Line** (from Constance's child down):
  353. 1. **Mary Snow** (b. c. 1630, d. 1704), m. c. 1650 Thomas Paine of Eastham. Paine Ancestry pp. 7-8, from
  354. Josiah Paine in NEHGR 22:60 (1868): "Thomas Paine ... married about 1650, Mary (daughter of Nicholas
  355. and Constance Snow of Eastham, and granddaughter of Stephen Hopkins the Pilgrim ...)" [C]. G. E.
  356. Bowman, editor of MD, treats it as established: "the descendants of Thomas Paine of Eastham, who
  357. married Mary Snow³ (Constance² Hopkins, Stephen¹)" (MD 15:189) [C]. Their son John wrote in his
  358. journal "my honored mother, Mary Paine, departed this life" (1704) (Paine Ancestry p. 8) [D, as quoted].
  359. Checked in the text. Nicholas Snow's will does not name his daughters, so Mary's parentage, like
  360. Ruth's, rests on the compilers.
  361. 2. **James Paine** (b. Eastham 6 Jul 1665), m. 9 Apr 1691 Bethiah Thacher. Thomas Paine's will, 12 May
  362. 1705 (Barnstable Probate 3:360): the residue "to be Equally Divided to and among my Children ; viz :
  363. Sam11 : Paine : Thomas Paine : Elisha Paine : John Paine : Nicholas Paine : James Paine : Joseph
  364. Paine : Dorcas Vickerie" (MD 15:189-190) [D, abstract]; Paine Ancestry p. 11: "James Paine, the sixth
  365. son of Thomas, was born at Eastham, July 6, 1665 ... April 9, 1691 ... he married Bethiah Thacher"
  366. [C]. Checked.
  367. 3. **Rev. Thomas Paine** (b. Barnstable 9 Apr 1694, d. 1757), m. 21 Apr 1721 Eunice Treat. Paine Ancestry
  368. p. 13 (children of James, "all born at Barnstable": "Thomas Paine, b. 9 April, 1694") and the memoir
  369. following, p. 16: "he was married by the Rev. Peter Thacher of the North Church to Eunice Treat of Boston"
  370. [C]. Checked.
  371. 4. **Robert Treat Paine**: "In 1731, March 11, his son Robert Treat was born, in Boston" (Paine Ancestry
  372. p. 17, memoir of Rev. Thomas) [C]. Checked.
  373. - **Shared ancestors:** `nicholas-snow-d1676` and `constance-hopkins-d1677`. Full (Mary and Ruth Snow were
  374. sisters).
  375. - **Rating:** famous side probable (the Paine steps documented, Mary's parentage compiled but standard);
  376. **whole line probable**.
  377. - **Relationship to Dick:** 4 generations below Constance, Dick 10: **third cousin, six times removed**.
  378. ### 2.3 William Standish Knowles (1917-2012)
  379. - **Why notable:** chemist at Monsanto; Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2001 (with Noyori and Sharpless) for
  380. chirally catalysed hydrogenation, used to make L-DOPA. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Standish_Knowles ;

  382. - **Category:** science.
  383. - **Line** (from the shared couple's child down):
  384. 1. **Jesse Cole** (b. 11 Feb 1755 per FamousKin; d. 1803, Orleans), m. Eastham 28 Jan 1773 Bethiah Young.
  385. **The weak step.** FamousKin makes him a son of Joseph Cole Jr. and Sarah Nickerson, citing MD 33:134
  386. (births of his children), MD 48:51 (1998) and MD 56:139 (2007) [C]; none of these volumes is online
  387. here. Against it: *The Nickerson Family* (leaf 97) lists the children of Joseph and Sarah (Nickerson)
  388. Cole as Mary and Sarah (twins, 1738), Reuben (1742/3), Abiel (1745) and Henry (1748), no Jesse; and the
  389. Eastham birth index for 1721-1760 has only two Jesse Coles, born 1732 (to Jonathan and Hope) and 1735
  390. (to Timothy and Martha), no 1755 birth. For it: his first son was named Joseph (below) [I]; the
  391. Nickerson list ends twenty years before Sarah's childbearing would have ended, and the 2007 MD article
  392. may be the proof. The couple is real: the First Church of Orleans admitted "Bethiah, Wife of Jesse Cole"
  393. on 3 June 1780 (MD 15:14) [D], in the same weeks as "Hannah, Wife of Reuben Cole", and that autumn "Hannah Wife of Abiel Cole" and "Mary, wife of Davd Snow" (Reuben, Abiel and Mary were children of Joseph Jr. and Sarah, Mary having married David Snow) [D]; suggestive of one family, no more [I].
  394. 2. **Elizabeth Cole** (b. 1787), m. Beriah Doane. Eastham birth index 1761-1800: "Elizabeth Jesse & Bethia
  395. 1787 B326", with Joseph (1776), Sarah (1778) and Jesse (1781) [D, index]. Doane genealogy (1902) no. 288:
  396. "BERIAH DOANE ... born at Eastham, Mass., Nov. 25, 1782 ... He married at Orleans, Dec. 21, 1809 (?),
  397. Elizabeth Cole", with a son "Jesse C." [C]. FamousKin cites MD 48:51 for "Marriage of Beriah Doane and
  398. probable daughter Elizabeth Cole" [C]. Checked (index and Doane).
  399. 3. **Jedidah Doane** (b. 5 Feb 1821), m. 14 Nov 1845 Joseph M. Knowles. Doane no. 288 (ii): "Jedidah, b.
  400. Feb. 5, 1821; m. Nov. 14, 1845, Joseph, s. of James H. Knowles of Eastham" [C, from Orleans records].
  401. Checked.
  402. 4. **Joseph Frank Knowles**, m. Angeline W. Bourne. FamousKin only [C].
  403. 5. **George Bourne Knowles**, m. Alice Pierce Tiffany. FamousKin only [C].
  404. 6. **William Standish Knowles**, born at Taunton (Wikipedia) [C]; his parents not checked.
  405. - **Shared ancestors:** `joseph-cole-1718` and `sarah-nickerson-fl1737`, if step 1 holds. Full. (Even if it
  406. fails, the FamousKin chain makes him a descendant of Constance through Ruth Snow and John Cole, the
  407. family's own line.) He would also be kin through Sarah (Bassett) Nickerson and the Bassetts.
  408. - **Rating:** **possible.** One step (Jesse's parents) unseen and contradicted by the omission in the
  409. Nickerson book; the bottom two steps compiled only.
  410. - **Relationship to Dick:** 6 generations below Joseph Cole Jr. and Sarah Nickerson, Dick 7: **fifth cousin,
  411. once removed**. Through Stephen Hopkins he is the 8th great-grandson (FamousKin).
  412. - To settle: MD 56:139 (2007) and MD 33:134; Joseph Cole Jr.'s Barnstable probate (d. 1795), which would
  413. name his children (it is already on the Cape Cod report's list for proving Sarah Cole).
  414. ### 2.4 Norman Rockwell (1894-1978)
  415. - **Why notable:** painter and illustrator; 323 *Saturday Evening Post* covers; the *Four Freedoms*.

  421. middle of March, 1682-3 ... Joseph, b. in 1688" [C, citing records]. Checked.
  422. 2. **Samuel Hopkins** (b. 1682/3), m. Lydia (Rich per FamousKin). Harwich VR [p.41]: "Reliance Hopkins

  542. - Note: through Jane Prence she also descends from Gov. Thomas Prence (`thomas-prence-fl1621`), Frances
  543. Holbrook's ancestor, so she would also be a cousin on Frances's side (half, through Prence's second wife,
  544. if the archive's Prence lines are through another wife; not worked out here).
  545. ### 2.9 Extra Hopkins lines for people already in `famous-kin.yaml`
  546. **Charles G. Dawes (1865-1951)** — already there through `john-woodbury-d1641` (half, probable).
  547. - New line, **half** (through Damaris, Elizabeth's daughter), all [C] from FamousKin: Damaris Hopkins
  548. (m. Jacob Cooke) → Caleb Cooke → Anne Cooke (m. James Johnson) → Caleb Johnson (m. Mary Cooke) → Elizabeth
  549. Johnson (m. Rev. Aaron Gates) → Aaron Gates (m. Ruth Beman) → Beman Gates (m. Betsey Sibyl Shipman) → Mary
  550. Beman Gates (m. Rufus R. Dawes) → Charles Gates Dawes. It meets the archive's existing line at Betsey
  551. Sibyl Shipman and Mary Beman Gates, which agrees. The Gates volume of Ferris, *Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines*
  552. (1931), already cited for Dawes, should cover the Gates-Johnson-Cooke steps; not seen.
  553. - `shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620`, `half: true`. **Possible.** 9 generations below Stephen: **half eighth
  554. cousin, twice removed**.
  555. **Richard Gere (b. 1949)** — already there through three lines.
  556. - New line, **half** (through Damaris), [C] FamousKin, and NEHGS lists "Stephen Hopkins, Elizabeth Fisher ...
  557. Jacob Cooke, Francis Cooke" among his Mayflower ancestors [C]: Damaris Hopkins (m. Jacob Cooke) → Jacob
  558. Cooke (m. Lydia Miller) → Margaret Cooke (m. Simon Lazell) → Sarah Lazell (m. Elkanah Elmes) → Ruth Elmes
  559. (m. Consider Fuller) → Lucinda Fuller (1792-1880) → Sarah E. Tewksbury → George Lane Gere → Albert William
  560. Gere → Homer George Gere → Richard Gere. It meets the archive's existing lines at Consider Fuller and
  561. Lucinda Fuller and agrees with them.
  562. - `shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620`, `half: true`. **Possible.** 11 generations below Stephen: **half tenth
  563. cousin**.
  564. **Sarah Palin (b. 1964)** — already there through `jeremiah-howes-1637` and `john-howland-fl1620`.
  565. - New line, full (through Giles), [C] FamousKin, which itself marks one step "Probable"; MayflowerHistory.com
  566. gives the same chain: Giles → Deborah Hopkins (m. Eastham 27 Jul 1668 Josiah Cooke, "not the son of Francis
  567. Cooke of the Mayflower", Hawes p. 19 [C, from Eastham records]) → Deborah Cooke (m. Moses Godfrey) → George
  568. Godfrey (m. Mercy Knowles) → Knowles Godfrey (the "probable" step) → Benjamin Godfrey → James Ryder Godfrey →
  569. Augusta Lodema Godfrey → Cora Godfrey Strong → Helen Louise Gower (1910-1985) → Sally Sheeran → Sarah Palin.
  570. It meets the archive's lines at Helen Louise Gower.
  571. - `shared: stephen-hopkins-fl1620`. **Possible.** 13 generations below Stephen: **tenth cousin, twice
  572. removed**.
  573. ---
  574. ## Rejected or unverifiable
  575. **Deyo**
  576. - None of the seven is dropped. Snyder and the Uptons stay at possible for want of sources for their lower
  577. steps, not because anything contradicts them.
  578. - Fred Upton's second route through the Cuddebacks (Wikipedia): not usable; Gumaer has two Esthers married to
  579. Abraham Cuddebacks and connects neither to Naomi Cuddeback.
  580. - The other New Paltz names on Wikipedia's "Hasbrouck family" list (Josiah Hasbrouck, Lydia Sayer Hasbrouck,
  581. William C. Hasbrouck, Gen. George H. Sharpe, Darren O'Day and others) were not worked. K. Hasbrouck and H&H,
  582. now both open on archive.org, would carry most of them.
  583. **Hopkins**
  584. - **Bing Crosby** (FamousKin, through Giles: Abigail Hopkins → Ruth Merrick → Hannah Sears → Nathaniel Foster →
  585. Mary Foster → Mary Lincoln m. Nathaniel Crosby → Nathaniel Crosby → "Harry Lincoln Crosby" → Bing): **held,
  586. conflicts with the archive.** `famous-kin.yaml` has his great-grandfather Nathaniel Crosby (1810-1856) as son
  587. of **Ruby Foster** and his father as **Harry Lowe** Crosby (as Wikipedia has it); FamousKin makes Nathaniel's
  588. mother **Mary Lincoln** and the father "Harry Lincoln". One of the two is wrong; do not add until settled.
  589. - **Col. Robert Gould Shaw** (FamousKin, through Mary Snow → John Paine (m. Bennett Freeman) → William Paine →
  590. Sarah Paine m. Thomas Sturgis → Russell Sturgis → Nathaniel Russell Sturgis → Sarah Blake Sturgis → Shaw):
  591. unverified. John Paine and his marriage to "Bennett, dau. of John and Mercy (Prence) Freeman" are in Paine
  592. Ancestry p. 10, but no Sturgis genealogy is online to check the rest. Worth doing: it would make Shaw a
  593. cousin of Frances too (through `john-freeman-1627` and `thomas-prence-fl1621`).
  594. - **John Howard Payne** (author of "Home, Sweet Home"): Paine Ancestry p. 10 says of John Paine (b. 1660/1),
  595. son of Thomas and Mary (Snow) Paine, "John Howard Payne ... was a great grandson". The two generations
  596. between are not given. A good lead for the writers category.
  597. - **S. Dillon Ripley** (Smithsonian), through Mark Snow → Thomas Snow (b. 1668, MD 7:14 [D]) → Josiah Snow ...:
  598. only the first two steps checkable; left aside.
  599. - **Half kin through Deborah (Ring) and Damaris (Cooke)** not worked: Levi P. Morton (Vice President), Gen.
  600. Leonard Wood, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Charles Dudley Warner, Lavinia Warren, Geena Davis and others on
  601. FamousKin's list. The brief put Constance and Giles first.
  602. - **Other FamousKin names through Constance or Giles**, unchecked beyond the chart and so not offered: Thomas
  603. Pynchon, Margaret Atwood, Tennessee Williams, Annie Proulx, William R. Day, Hoyt Vandenberg, Dan Quayle, Orrin
  604. Hatch, Howard Dean, Andrew Card, Jon Meacham, Brewster Kahle, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley, Kyra
  605. Sedgwick, Matthew Perry, Paul and A. Bartlett Giamatti, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne, Ruth Gordon and
  606. others. Several have FamousKin's own "Probable" flag on a step (e.g. Paul Walker, Don Winslow).
  607. - **Avril Lavigne** and **Christopher Lloyd** (Giles, per the NEHGS site and a search summary): not on
  608. FamousKin's Hopkins list; no line found.
  609. - **Patricia Clapp** (author of *Constance: A Story of Early Plymouth*): Wikipedia says she was a descendant;
  610. no line given.
  611. - **No US president** was found among Stephen Hopkins's descendants in FamousKin, MayflowerHistory.com or the
  612. NEHGS list; two Vice Presidents are (Dawes, half; Quayle, unchecked; Morton, half, unchecked).
  613. ## Notes for the archive
  614. - `stephen-hopkins-fl1620` names only Elizabeth as a wife. The former wife, mother of Constance and Giles, is
  615. Mary (Kent, per Simon Neal in the *Mayflower Quarterly*, 2012-13; [C] here). Worth a line on the page so that
  616. half and full kin read correctly.
  617. - `chretien-deyo-d1687`: the 1687 heirs' agreement (LeFevre pp. 255-256) is the documentary proof that his
  618. daughters married Abraham Hasbrouck, Jean Hasbrouck, Simon LeFevre and Abraham DuBois; the page cites it only
  619. for the estate.
  620. - K. Hasbrouck's *The Hasbrouck Family in America* (1961), not used before, is open on archive.org and carries
  621. most Hasbrouck-descended lines with baptisms, Bibles and gravestones; the Elting study (1955) and the New Paltz
  622. baptisms 1817-1882 (1954) are open too.
  623. - Through Mark Snow's second wife Jane Prence, Taylor Swift (and S. Dillon Ripley) also descend from
  624. `thomas-prence-fl1621`, Frances's ancestor; Robert Gould Shaw does through Bennett Freeman.
