Family

Spouse 1
Elizabeth Rowlison · married 1684

Of Salisbury. Living 16 Aug 1696, when "David, s. John and Elizabeth" was baptized at Beverly; probably dead by 30 Mar 1698, when John married again. No record of her death has been found.

Spouse 2
Sarah Morrell · married 1698

"Sarrah [Morrell], and John Elinwood, Mar. 30, 1698" (Beverly). That the groom is this John is inferred, but he was the only grown John Ellinwood at Beverly then (his son John was twelve), and the children of John and Sarah follow on from those of John and Elizabeth.

Notes

Son of Ralph Ellinwood and Ellen (Lynn), “of Bas river”. He served with his brother Ralph in King Philip’s War, and in 1676, “Imprest & sent to ye Eastward as a souldier”, was so wounded at Wells that “my fore finger being shott away & ye rest of my hand so greiuously shattered & Torn” left the hand “almost altogether vseless”; in March 1700/1 the General Court granted him £5 and £3 a year for life (Acts and Resolves VII:270-271). He married Elizabeth Rowlison of Salisbury at Marblehead in 1684/5, the sister, probably, of his brother Ralph’s second wife. Recorded among Ralph and Ellen’s children in the Essex County register (record).

His children, from the Beverly vital records: by Elizabeth, John (2 Mar 1685/6), Elizabeth (2 Feb 1693/4) and David (baptized 16 Aug 1696, seven months after Elizabeth was admitted to the church); by Sarah, Sarah (4 May 1699), Mehetabel and Peter (both baptized 11 Oct 1702), Anah (24 Jan 1704) and James (22 Sept 1706) (record; record). He married Sarah Morrell on 30 Mar 1698 (record), so Elizabeth very probably died between August 1696 and March 1698, though no record of her death has been found.

Open questions

  • Elizabeth’s death, between August 1696 and March 1698 (not in the Beverly records), and whether any other record names the John who married Sarah Morrell as this John.
