The family's own surname line, with the families of the wives who married into it. Ralph Ellinwood came to Salem on the Truelove in 1635 and settled at Beverly; the book The Ellingwood Line follows him and his sons. The Ellingwoods went to sea from Beverly, to Boston, to the Penobscot in Maine, and from there, about 1817, west to Dearborn County, Indiana, where Finley was born in 1852.
The line at a glance
Ralph Ellinwood (c. 1607-1673/4), of Salem and Beverly > Ralph (1657-c. 1741) > Ralph (1694-1728/9), lost at sea > Israel (b. 1714, Beverly), of Boston > Richard (b. 1742, Boston) > Richard (1767-1803), of Frankfort, Maine > Richard (1790-1864), of Manchester, Indiana > Elijah (1819-1872) > Dr. Finley Ellingwood (1852-1920), physician and medical author of Evanston, Illinois > Richard Everett "Cudge" Ellingwood Sr. (1895-1985), of Madison and Spokane > Richard Everett "Dick" Ellingwood Jr. (1929-2019) > John Ellingwood and his children.
The wives' families: the Rices and Sylvesters of Cumberland County, Maine (Finley's mother's people) are in this line. Five are lines of their own: Sarah Woodbury's (Woodbury), Susanna Rand's (Rand), Hope Holdershaw's Cape Cod people (Holdershaw and Cole), Jennie Elliott's, with the Deyos and Freers of New Paltz (Elliott and Adams), and Ruth Short's (Pattullo and Short).
How sure it is
- Ralph I and Ralph II are documented in the Ellingwood book's research: the Truelove register, the Essex county registers and courts, the Marblehead and Beverly records.
- Ralph III to Israel, and Israel to Richard of Boston (proven): the Beverly register's family of Ralph and Sarah Ellingwood, the 1743 division of Ralph III's estate and Ralph II's will of 1741, naming "my Two Grandsons Israel Elinwood & Ralph Elinwood" (Research decisions); Richard's Boston birth record, Israel's guardianship of "your Son Richard" (1753) and Israel's will (1785).
- Richard of Boston to Richard of Frankfort (proven, by inference): the Suffolk guardianship of 1785 and the distribution of his brother Joseph's estate (1790) make Richard and Ralph sons of Richard and Sarah of Boston; that they are the Frankfort brothers rests on their names and ages, Ralph's 1800 census entry at Frankfort ("from whence emigrated: Boston") and the names of the Frankfort Richard's children.
- Richard of Frankfort to Richard of Indiana (probable): the son Richard named first in the Frankfort will of 1802, born in February 1790 by the family Bible; the Indiana Richard was born in Maine about 1790 and named a daughter Hope. No Indiana record names his father.
- Richard of Indiana to Elijah (probable): no record names Elijah's father, but he was born at Manchester in 1819, where Richard was living by 1820, lived near him in 1850, and the family Bible recording Richard came down to Elijah's grandson. It fits what the memoir says: Cudge was named for "my great grandfather Richard Ellingwood."
- Finley to the present rests on Cudge's memoir and its records. The comparison with the
Ancestry tree is in
research/gedcom/report-ellingwood-mcmillan.md.
Sources
Cudge's memoir, Cudge (1968-70), is the main source for four generations: his parents, brothers and sisters, his marriage to Ruth Short and their five children. His 1985 obituary confirms the outline. Both are in Books. The censuses of 1880-1930 and the Cook County marriage index come through the Ancestry tree.
Open questions
- Richard of Frankfort's birth in Boston (1767), joining the Maine family to Israel's.
- Records for Elijah: his marriage to Mary Abigail Rice and the censuses of 1850-1870.
- Records to attach: Dick's birth (Madison, 1929) and death (2019), and John's birth.
