Anchors in the archive: Richard Everett Ellingwood Jr. (Dick), Richard Everett Ellingwood, Finley Ellingwood, Elijah Ellingwood, Richard Ellingwood, Richard Ellingwood, Richard Ellingwood, Israel Ellingwood, Ralph Ellinwood, Ralph Ellingwood, and the three women Sarah Woodbury, Susanna Rand, Sarah Slater.
Tiers: [D] documented (record, or printed transcript/abstract), [C] compiled, [I] inferred, [T] tradition. Ratings: Proven / Probable / Possible / Disproven. Dates as the records give them (Old Style double years kept).
Headlines
- Woodbury: the Old Planter is John Woodbury, not William. Sarah Woodbury descends from John Woodbury (Cape Ann 1624, Salem 1626, the colony's agent to England 1627-28) through his eldest son Humphrey (by John's first wife), Humphrey's son Thomas, and Thomas's son William (b. Salem 17 Sept 1662), who married Joanna Wheeler of Concord in 1689. Humphrey's own deposition of 1680/1 names "my father, John Woodberye". William Woodbury the Old Planter was John's brother, not an ancestor.
- Joanna Wheeler was "of Concord": the Beverly marriage record says so. She was very probably Johanna, born at Concord 21 Dec 1671 to John and Sarah (Larkin) Wheeler. She is not of the Salisbury Wheelers already in the archive (Henry Wheeler and Abigail Allen had no Joanna).
- Levi Woodbury is kin, but only through John Woodbury's second marriage: Levi descends twice from Peter Woodbury (bp. 1640), John's son by Agnes. Dick descends from Humphrey, John's son by his first wife, so Dick and Levi are half fifth cousins, six times removed. A second, full, line runs through William Dodge (Dick's 9th-great-grandfather, through Hannah Dodge).
- The same Peter Woodbury line brings in Vice-President Charles G. Dawes, Henry Adams and his brothers, Bishop Phillips Brooks, Justice Horace Gray and Ward Chipman, all half kin through John Woodbury.
- Rand: the tree has merged two Robert Rands. Susanna Rand's father, Robert Rand the Boston joiner, was born at Lynn 6 Oct 1686, son of Robert Rand Jr. and Tabitha Ivory. The tree's "born 18 June 1684, Charlestown" belongs to a different Robert, a sailmaker, son of Thomas Rand of Charlestown, who married Elizabeth Welch in 1709. "Elizabeth Welch" has then been pushed back onto the wife of Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694), whose surname is unknown.
- Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694) had been a servant of Robert Keayne, Boston's notorious merchant: Keayne's will (1653) leaves 40s "to Robert Rand of Lyn sometime my servant". His descent from Robert and Alice Rand of Charlestown is only Possible.
- Cheever: Susanna Cheever does not descend from Ezekiel Cheever. Her father Richard Cheever, Boston cordwainer, was born in Canterbury about 1660, a nephew sent for in 1668 by his childless uncle Bartholomew Cheever. Bartholomew's will (1693) names "brother Daniel Cheever" and "cousins Ezekiel Cheever, schoolmaster, and Richard Cheever". Daniel of Cambridge was therefore Bartholomew's brother, Richard's uncle, and not Richard's father (Hassam 1882) and not Ezekiel's brother. Torrey (TAG 1934) found the family in Canterbury: Bartholomew bp. 1616/7, son of Richard Cheever, glover, and Katharine Willyams (m. 1612). Ezekiel was "probably his first cousin". So the schoolmaster is a collateral cousin of Susanna's family, about Dick's first cousin ten times removed (Possible).
- Ivory: Speaker John Burrill (1657-1721) was Tabitha Ivory's first cousin; Secretary of State Timothy Pickering and Senator James Burrill Jr. of Rhode Island also descend from Thomas and Ann Ivory, Dick's 9th-great-grandparents. Thomas Ivory, Tabitha's father, died 18 July 1690, not 1697.
- Slater: the Mulberry/Everton ancestry in the tree belongs to someone else. Susanna Mulberry (b. Boston 1725/6, d. Halifax 1794) married Malachy Salter (1715/16-1781), the Halifax merchant and assemblyman, on 26 July 1744. "Salter" has been read as "Slater". Nothing ties her to Sarah Slater who married Richard Ellingwood in 1766. New lead: Mary Slater married Asa Stoddard 24 Nov 1765 (by Rev. Samuel Stillman). Asa Stoddard, bricklayer, was surety on Sarah Ellingwood's administration bond in 1784, and Stillman married her to Isaac Downes. Mary was possibly Sarah's sister.
1. Pedigrees
Generation numbers count up from Dick (1 = parent). "8g-grandparent" = 8th-great-grandparent.
1A. Sarah Woodbury (Dick's 5g-grandmother; generation 8)
8. Sarah Woodbury (b. 14 Dec 1690, Beverly; m. int. 3 Feb 1711/2 Ralph Ellingwood III; m. (2) int. 31 May 1730 Zebulon Allen of Salem; living Jan 1731/2; death unproven).
- Birth: "Sarah, d. William and Joanna, Dec. 14, 1690" [D, Vital Records of Beverly I:384, https://archive.org/details/vitalrecordsofbe01beve].
- Remarriage: "Sary, and Zebulan Allen of Salem, int. May 31, 1730" [D, Beverly VR II:111]; her daughter "Joanna, d. Zebulan and Sarah, Jan. 12, 1731-2" [D, Beverly VR I:23].
- Link to William & Joanna: Probable. The marriage intention doesn't name her parents, and Beverly had other Sarah Woodburys of marriageable age: Sarah, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth, bp. 19:3m:1689, and Sarah, daughter of Ebenezer and Hannah, bp. 1696 (Beverly VR I:384-395). For this Sarah: her first son was named Israel (her brother Israel b. 1694); her Allen daughter was named Joanna (her mother's name) [I]; all compiled accounts agree (WikiTree Woodbury-1256; Porter Pedigree 1907) [C]. To settle: William Woodbury's will (6 Nov 1725, proved 29 Nov 1725, Essex Probate) should name "daughter Sarah Ellinwood".
- Death: the trees' "Nov 1788, aged 98" is unsourced. Beverly records her brother "William, bur. Oct. 18, 1788, a. 91 y." (Beverly VR II:614), and WikiTree gives that brother a Nov 1788 death. The trees may have transferred his 1788 death to her. Unproven; Beverly deaths have no Sarah Allen.
9. William Woodbury (b. 17 Sept 1662, Salem; m. 29 Sept 1689, Beverly, Joanna Wheeler; d. Nov 1725, Beverly).
- Birth: "William, s. Thomas and Hana, Sept. 17, 1662. ct. r." [D, Vital Records of Salem II:441, https://archive.org/details/vitalrecordsofsabyu02sale]; also Savage IV:636 [C].
- Marriage: "William, and Joanna Wheler of Concord, Sept. 29, 1689" [D, Beverly VR II:351].
- Children (Beverly VR I:384-393) [D]: Sarah 14 Dec 1690; Hannah 14 Jan 1692/3 (d. 16 Mar 1693/4, gravestone "d. William, jr. [and Joanna]", II:616); Israel 26 Dec 1694; William 11 July 1697; Thomas 5 Sept 1700; Hugh 18 Mar 1703; Lois 1 May 1705 ("William [sr.]"); Elisha 21 Feb 1706/7 ("William [sr.]"); Mihill 18 Jan 1712/13. Baptisms at Beverly First Church read "Israel, of William and Joanna (Wheeler) Woodberry (The mother a native of Concord)" [D/C, Putnam's Historical Magazine 1898, https://archive.org/details/putnamshistorica1898putn].
- Will dated 6 Nov 1725, proved 29 Nov 1725 [C, WikiTree Woodbury-21; not seen].
- Link: William (b. 1662, son of Thomas) = Joanna's husband: Probable. Evidence: A Porter Pedigree (1907) pp. 58-59 lists Thomas and Hannah (Dodge) Porter Woodbury's son "William Woodbury, 1662-1725. Married Joanna Wheeler. 9 children" [C, https://archive.org/details/porterpedigreebe1907port]. He was styled "William jr." in 1694, which fits a younger man distinguished from his uncle William (b. 1651, son of Humphrey), and "sr." by 1705, after another William Woodbury married Judith Woodbury in 1704 [D/I]. His children were named Israel and Thomas, which are the names of his brother and father [I]. The other candidate, William b. 10 Mar 1665, son of William Jr. and Judith (Beverly VR I:386), has no linking evidence. To settle: Thomas Woodbury's probate (Essex docket 30516, 20 Apr 1719) and William's own will.
9. Joanna Wheeler (b. 21 Dec 1671, Concord; d. 7 Apr 1748, Beverly, aged 76).
- Death: "Joanna, wid. [w. William, Apr. 7. G.R.1], 1748, a. 76 y." [D, Beverly VR II:610]. (WikiTree's "died Concord" is wrong.)
- Birth: "Johanna daughter of John Wheler & Sarah his wife borne, 21. desemr. 1671" [D, Concord, Massachusetts, Births, Marriages and Deaths 1635-1850 (1895), p. 16, https://archive.org/details/concordmassachus1635conc]. She is the only Joanna Wheeler born at Concord near that date (others: Joannah d. Tho: 1680; later ones of Samuel).
- Link to John & Sarah Wheeler: Probable (only candidate; age at death fits exactly). Conflict: the Wheeler Family in America (1914) p. 31 lists her "d. young", without a source [C, https://archive.org/details/genealogicalency00whee]. The Beverly records contradict that. To settle: John Wheeler's will/probate (Middlesex; he d. 27 Sept 1713).
- Further back [C, Wheeler genealogy p. 31; not verified]: John Wheeler (b. Concord 19 Jan 1643/4?, d. 27 Sept 1713), son of George Wheeler and Katherine of Concord; m. 25 Mar 1663/4 Sarah Larkin (b. 13 Jan 1647, d. 12 Aug 1725 [Concord VR records a Sarah, w. John, d. Aug. 12, 1725]), daughter of Edward Larkin of Charlestown and Joanna. Joanna was probably named for her grandmother Joanna Larkin [I].
10. Thomas Woodbury (b. c. 1638-40; m. (1) 2 Dec 1661 Hannah (Dodge) Porter; m. (2) 28 Apr 1690 Elizabeth Curtis, widow; d. c. 1719, Beverly).
- Marriage (2): "Thomas, and Ellizebeth Courtis, wid., Apr. 28, 1690" [D, Beverly VR II]. Probate docket 30516, 20 Apr 1719 [C, WikiTree Woodbury-17].
- Link to Humphrey: Probable. Savage: "THOMAS ... s. of Humphrey, m. 2 Dec. 1661, Hannah
Porter, perhaps d. of William Dodge, and wid. of Samuel Porter, had William, b. 17 Sept. foll."
Humphrey's will (4 Mar 1686) names sons "John, Thomas, and Joseph"; his son Richard's will (1 Aug
- names "brs. Thomas and William" [C, Savage IV:634-636, https://archive.org/details/genealogicaldic04savarich]. The Porter Pedigree (1907) pp. 58-59 agrees: "Thomas, son of Humphrey and Elizabeth Woodbury" [C]. Thomas was born before Humphrey joined Salem church (1643), so there is no baptism. His mother's will of 1689 (abstract only) names sons William and John, but the abstract is partial (NEHGR 7:322). To settle: Humphrey's will, Suffolk Probate vol. 11, fols. 37-38.
10. Hannah Dodge (b. 1642; m. (1) Samuel Porter, d. 1660; m. (2) Thomas Woodbury; d. 2 Jan 1688/9, Beverly).
- Death: "Hannah, w. Thomas, and d. William and Elizebeth Dodg, Jan. 2, 1688-9, a. abt. 45 y." [D, Beverly VR II:617]. Link to William & Elizabeth Dodge: Proven (the record names them).
- Dodge Genealogy (1894) p. 15: William Dodge's children "Capt. John, b. 1636 ... Capt. William, b. 19th Sept., 1640 ... Hannah, b. 1642; m. Samuel Porter, who d. 1660; m. 2d, Thomas Woodberry, 2d Dec. 1661" [C, https://archive.org/details/genealogyofdodge011894dodg].
- 11. William Dodge (c. 1604 - aft. 1685), came 1629 in the Lion's Whelp; m. Elizabeth [surname unproven; Porter Pedigree and Dodge Genealogy disagree with "Haskell", which belongs to "Coker William" Dodge]. See §2.
11. Humphrey Woodbury (b. c. 1608, England; d. between 4 Mar and 11 Oct 1686, Beverly), m. by 1637 Elizabeth [Hunter, per TAG 40:80-81 as cited in GMB] (d. 1689; will 1 May 1689, codicil 8 Aug 1689, proved 26 Nov 1689).
- Ages: "Umpher Wodbery" aged 61 on 25 Sept 1668 (EQC 4:47); aged 72 in Feb 1680/1 [D, via GMB].
- Link to John Woodbury: Proven. Humphrey's deposition, 16 Feb 1680/1: "when I lived in Somersetshire in England ... my father, John Woodbury, since deceased, did about 56 years ago remove to New E[ngland] ... To further this design after about ½ a year's stay in England my father returned to N.E. and brought me with him. We arrived at the place now called Salem in or about the month of June, 1628" [D, EIHC 13:137, quoted in R. C. Anderson, The Great Migration Begins III:2055-2057, https://archive.org/details/greatmigrationbe0003ande].
- Elizabeth as Thomas's mother: Probable (married by 1637; Thomas b. c. 1638-40).
12. John Woodbury (b. by c. 1583; d. between 29 June 1641 and Jan 1641/2, Salem), "Old Planter"; m. (1) unknown, mother of Humphrey; m. (2) by 1629/1636 Agnes (Annis), d. 14 Feb 1672/3. GMB: "The mother of Humphrey Woodbury was certainly not the mother of the rest of John Woodbury's children" [C]. The Burlescombe, Devon marriage of a John Woodbury to Joanna Humphrey (1596; she was buried 1601) is rejected by GMB as the immigrant's and his first wife's, and accepted by Dawes-Gates (1931). Unresolved.
1B. Susanna Rand (Dick's 5g-grandmother; generation 7)
7. Susanna Rand (b. 12 Feb 1715/6, Boston). Already in the archive [D].
- Parents: Rand Genealogy (1898) p. 20: "22. ROBERT, son of Robert (7), Boston; joiner; born October 6, 1686; died February 11, 1752; gravestone in Granary Burial ground; married January 26, 1709, Susanna, daughter of Richard and Abigail Cheever, who was born August 27, 1682, and died November 18, 1748"; children include "Susanna, born February 12, 1715 ... married March 18, 1742, Israel Ellenwood" [C, https://archive.org/details/genealogyofrandf00rand]. Proven with the 1753 Suffolk guardianship ("in right of his Grandfather Robert Rand late of Boston Joyner") already in the archive [D].
8. Robert Rand, joiner (b. 6 Oct 1686, Lynn; m. 26 Jan 1709/10, Boston, by Rev. Benjamin Wadsworth, Susanna Cheever; d. 11 Feb 1752, Boston).
- Birth: "Robert, s. Roberd, jr. and Tabitha, Oct. 6, 1686" [D, Vital Records of Lynn I:341, https://archive.org/details/vitalrecordsofly01unse].
- Marriage: "Robert Rand & Susana Cheever ... Rev. Benj. Wadsworth ... Jan. 26, 1709" [D, Boston Record Commissioners (RC) 28, Boston Marriages 1700-1751, p. 25, https://archive.org/details/reportofrecordmarr00bost]. On the same page, by Rev. Thomas Bridge, 12 May 1709: "Robert Rand & Eliza. Welch", a different Robert.
- Link to Robert Rand Jr. of Lynn and Tabitha Ivory: Probable [C, Rand Genealogy pp. 13, 20]. On the Narragansett grantees list, a Lynn soldier "— Rand" of 1675 has as claimant in 1733 "Robert Rand, son" [D, Bodge, Soldiers in King Philip's War (1906) p. 422, https://archive.org/details/soldiersinkingph00bodg_0]. That fits this Robert, the eldest surviving son. To settle: Robert Rand Jr.'s probate (Essex, 1717/8).
- Conflict with the tree. The tree gives "b. 18 Jun 1684, Charlestown" and "d. 1752, Charlestown". 18 June 1684 is the birth of Robert Rand, sailmaker of Boston, son of Thomas Rand and Sarah Longley of Charlestown, who "married May 2, 1709, Elizabeth Welch" (Rand Genealogy no. 27, p. 23; RC 28 p. 25 gives 12 May 1709). The tree's birth is Disproven for this man.
8. Susanna Cheever (b. 27 Aug 1682, Boston; d. 18 Nov 1748).
- Birth: "Susanna of Richard & Abigail Cheever born Aug. 27" [1682] [D, RC 9, Boston Births, Baptisms, Marriages and Deaths 1630-1699, https://archive.org/details/reportofrecordco9163bost]. The family Bible has "Susannah Cheever was born 27 August 1682 about 4 in morning" [D, transcribed in Hassam, NEHGR 36:306]. Proven.
9. Robert Rand Jr. (b. c. 1653-4; m. "last of Jan., 1683" [1683/4], Lynn, Tabitha Ivory; d. 6 Dec 1717, Lynn, "in his 64th y.", gravestone).
- Marriage: "Roberd [Rand], jr., and Tabitha Ivery, 'last of' Jan., 1683" [D, Lynn VR II:205].
- Death: "Robert, Dec. 6, 1717, in his 64th y. G.R.1" [D, Lynn VR II:572].
- Children (Lynn VR I:341-342): Robert 1686; Zechariah 1688 (bur. 1688); Zechariah 1689; Hannah 1691; Thomas 1693 (d. 1693); Mary 1695; John 1697/8 (d. 1699/1700); Lois 1700 [D].
- Military: "Robert Rand 01 10 00", credited under Capt. Samuel Brocklebank, 24 Mar 1675/6 [D, Bodge p. 207]; whether this is Jr. or Sr. is not stated [I: probably Jr., then about 22].
- Link to Robert Rand Sr.: Probable [C, Rand Genealogy p. 13; Savage III:504 "ROBERT, Lynn, s. prob. of the preced."].
9. Tabitha Ivory (b. 30 Apr 1663, Lynn).
- Birth: "Talithacumy [Tabitha], d. Tho[mas] and Mary, 30:2m:1663. ct. r." [D, Lynn VR I:211]. The tree's "20 Apr 1663" is a misreading. Link Proven.
- Death "13 Oct 1740, Lynn" (tree): not found in Lynn VR.
9. Richard Cheever, cordwainer of Boston (b. c. 1660, Canterbury, England; m. 7 Oct 1680 Abigail [Milam]; d. between 1706 and 8 Aug 1709).
- Family Bible of William Downes Cheever (grandson) [T, transcribed in J. T. Hassam, "Bartholomew and Richard Cheever and Some of Their Descendants", NEHGR 36 (1882) 305-313, https://archive.org/details/newenglandhistorv36wate]: "In the year 1637, Came Over from the Citty of Canterbury in England, A Certain Bartho. Cheever, aged then about 30 years ... He having no Children of his Own in 1667 He sent to Canterbury to his Brother Daniell for One of his sons, the 2 first refused Coming his 3d & youngest son Richard then 7 year Old, accepted, and in 1668 Came over to his uncle ... Richard Cheever Was Born in Mercerey Lane in the Citty of Canterbury 1660" ... "Richard and Abigail Cheever was mareyed 7 October 1680."
- Records [D, abstracted by Hassam]: King Philip's War service, June 24 and Aug 24, 1676; surveyor 1683/4; tithingman 1685, 1694/5; sealer of leather 1691/2; constable 1692/3; express rider for the Council 1702-1706. Deed of 6 June 1704. "Administration (No. 3189) on his estate, which was appraised at £2192: 2: 5, was granted Aug. 8, 1709, to his widow Abigail."
- Richard's parentage: Probable that he was a grandson of Richard Cheever, glover, and Katharine Willyams of Canterbury, through a son other than Daniel of Cambridge. His father is not identified. Bartholomew's will calls him "cousin", which then often meant nephew, and leaves him the house he lived in for life [D abstract]. The Bible calls him "his uncle Barth°" [T]. Torrey, TAG 11 (1934) 118-120: "Richard Cheever, nephew of Bartholomew Cheever, born in Canterbury, 1660 ... has not been fully identified. He had sons Bartholomew, Daniel, and James. Of these, the first two were named, presumably, for his uncles, and James may have been named for his father" [C, https://archive.org/details/sim_american-genealogist_1934-10_11_2]. A James Cheever, glover then milliner, was a freeman of Canterbury in 1638 and issued Canterbury trade tokens in 1657-1663 [C]. He is Possible as Richard's father.
- The tree's "son of Daniel Cheever (1621-1703) of Cambridge" is Disproven. Hassam (1882): "The father of Richard Cheever could not have been Bartholomew's brother Daniel, for the names of the children of the latter are distinctly mentioned in the wills of the two brothers, and they were ... all born in New England, where Daniel Cheever was living as early as 1645." Paige's list of Daniel's children (Mary 1645/6 ... Elizabeth 1672) has no Richard [C, Paige, History of Cambridge (1877) p. 509, https://archive.org/details/historyofcambrid00paig]. The tree's "Richard b. 1656" matches Daniel's daughter Mary, b. 6 Oct 1656. The tree's death "1704, Boston?" comes from the Bible's "died in France, Taken in his Way Home to England, about the year 1704" [T]. He was still acting for the Council after that, and administration was granted in 1709.
9. Abigail [Milam] (b. 10 Oct 1660, Boston; d. 21 Jan 1732/3 "in the 73 year of her age").
- "Abigail of Humphry & Mary Milam born Oct. 10" [1660] [D, RC 9]. That Richard's wife Abigail was this Abigail: Probable [C, WikiTree Cheever-88, citing Torrey's New England Marriages; her age at death fits exactly].
10. Robert Rand Sr. of Lynn (d. 8 Nov 1694, Lynn), m. Elizabeth (d. 29 Aug 1693).
- "Roberd [Rand], sr., Nov. 8, 1694"; "Elizabeth, w. Robert, sr., Aug. 29, 1693" [D, Lynn VR II:572]. Daughter "Hanna, d. Robert, —:6m:1657" [D, Lynn VR I:341].
- Keayne's will, 1653: "Item I give & bequeath to Robert Rand of Lyn sometime my servant forty shillings to be payd him within two yeares after my decease, if he be then liveing in this country" [D, RC 10, Miscellaneous Papers (1886) p. 25, https://archive.org/details/reportofrecordco10bost_0].
- Tree conflicts. "b. 1622, Lynn" is unsupported, since Lynn was settled in 1629. "Elizabeth Welch (b. 16 Oct 1633, Lynn)" is Disproven as to surname and birth: Welch belongs to the sailmaker's wife of 1709.
- Parents: Possible only. The Rand Genealogy (pp. 9-10) makes him a son of Robert and Alice (Sharpe?) Rand of Charlestown on T. B. Wyman's unpublished late opinion, from an unspecified 1709 deed. Against it: Alice Rand's will (22 Aug 1683, proved 1691) names her son Nathaniel, grandsons, "4 daus." and the daughters of son Thomas, but no Robert, though Robert of Lynn was alive until 1694 [C, Wyman, Genealogies and Estates of Charlestown II:782, https://archive.org/details/genealogiesestat02wyma]. Savage keeps the two men separate.
10. Thomas Ivory II (m. "abt. 17:3m:1660" Mary Davis; d. 18 July 1690, Lynn).
- Marriage: "Mary [Davice], and Tho[mas] Ivory, abt. 17:3m:1660" [D, Lynn VR II]. Death: "Thomas, jr., July 18, 1690" [D, Lynn VR II:511]. Savage: son of Thomas Ivory (1st) of Lynn; children Lois 1661, Tabitha 1663, Thomas 1665, Hannah 1667, John 1669, Theophilus 1670, William 1674 [C, Savage vol. 2 s.v. Ivory, https://archive.org/details/genealogicaldic02savarich].
- Tree conflict. "d. 1697" is Disproven (1690). "b. Feb 1635, St Clement Danes, Middlesex" is unsupported.
- Mary (Davis) Ivory: "Mary, wid., Sept. 15, 1732, a. abt. 97 y. G.R.1" [D, Lynn VR II:511].
11. Thomas Ivory I (Lynn 1638; d. 1664), m. Ann [South], who m. (2) William Croft [C, Savage; Burrill paper 1907, which names her "Ann (South)"]. Children: Thomas; Lois (m. 10 May 1656 Lt. John Burrill); Ruth (m. Theophilus Bailey); Sarah (m. Feb 1661 Moses Chadwell) [C].
11. Richard Cheever, glover, of Canterbury m. 1612 Katharine Willyams, daughter of John Willyams, capper. "Chever, Richard = Katharine, d. of John Willyams, capper. 1612" (Roll of Freemen of Canterbury, freemen by marriage). Children baptized at St Alphage: Peter 8 June 1613, James 19 Feb 1614/15, Bartholomew 12 Jan 1616/17. John was a freeman in 1650. Daniel of Cambridge and Abraham of Boston were brothers of Bartholomew by the wills [C, Torrey TAG 11:118-120]. Probable as Susanna Cheever's great-grandparents.
1C. Sarah Slater (Dick's 4g-grandmother; generation 6)
6. Sarah Slater (m. 5 Jan 1766, Boston, Richard Ellingwood, cooper, RC 30 p. 399, Trinity Church section; m. (2) 7 Nov 1784 Isaac Downes, by Rev. Samuel Stillman; living 26 Jan 1790, signing by mark). These facts are already in the archive [D].
- Parents: not established. The tree's birth (25 Aug 1744, Boston) and mother (Susanna Mulberry)
have no record behind them. The Mulberry attribution is Disproven as recorded: Susanna
Mulberry married a Salter, not a Slater:
- "Malachi Salter & Susanna Mulberry. Int. reads [Malachy Salter Jr.] [Mulbury Jr.]" [D, RC 28 p. 262]; married 26 July 1744 [C, Dictionary of Canadian Biography, "Salter, Malachy", http://www.biographi.ca/en/bio/salter_malachy_4E.html].
- "Susanna daughter of Benjamin and Ann Mulbery" [b. 1725/6] [D, RC 24 p. 172, https://archive.org/details/reportofrecordco2417bost]; "Susannah Salter, died at Halifax, 1794, aged 68 years" (St Paul's burying ground) [C, W. J. Stairs, Family History (1906) p. 251, https://archive.org/details/familyhistory00stai]. The tree's death "19 Feb 1794, Halifax" is therefore Mrs. Salter's.
- No Sarah appears among the Salter children known from Stairs, the DCB or WikiTree (Salter-1649). The 1766 record reads "Slater". In 1790 Sarah signed by mark, which is unlikely for a daughter of a rich Halifax merchant [I]. Mary Slater's husband (below) stood surety for her in 1784.
- New leads for her family [D for the records; links unproven]:
- "Asa Stodder & Mary Slatter. Int. reads [Stoddard] [Slater]", m. by Rev. Samuel Stillman, Nov. 24, 1765 [D, RC 30, Boston Marriages 1752-1809, p. 58, https://archive.org/details/volumeofrecordsr3017bost]. Asa Stoddard, bricklayer, was surety on Sarah Ellingwood's administration bond on 5 Nov 1784, and Stillman married Sarah to Isaac Downes two days later [D, archive's Suffolk probate abstracts]. Possible that Mary was Sarah's sister.
- "Elisha Duncam [Dunham] & Abigail Slater" [D, RC 30 p. 48, c. 1768-70]; "Gibbens Bouve & Mary Slatter, July 18, 1765" [D, RC 30 p. 424]; "Benjamin Slater & Mary Simpson Chamberlain" [later].
- Possible parents (marriages in RC 28): James Slater & Elisabeth Odiorne (1735); Claus Slater & Sarah Russell (1739/40, p. 212); Peter Slater & Abigail Bradford (1741-51 section). No Boston births of Slater children are printed in RC 24.
2. Notable ancestors on these lines
John Woodbury, Old Planter (d. 1641/2), Dick's 10g-grandfather. He was among the Dorchester Company men who settled Cape Ann in 1624, and one of Roger Conant's "honest and prudent men" who moved the remnant to Naumkeag (Salem) in 1626. In the autumn of 1627 he went back to England "to explain to those interested, financially and otherwise, the condition, needs and prospects of the settlement", which made him, in Dawes-Gates's words, "the first envoy from this colony to the mother country". He returned in June 1628, three months before Endicott, bringing his son Humphrey. Richard Brackenbury, who came with Endicott, deposed that "we came ashore, at a place now called Salem, the 6th of September 1628" and found John Woodbury among the settlers. He was sworn constable 28 Sept 1630, admitted freeman 18 May 1631, received one of the five 200-acre Old Planters' farms at the head of Bass River (25 Jan 1635/6, with Trask, Conant, Palfrey and Balch), was deputy to the General Court 1635-1639 and a Salem selectman 1636-41. GMB: "He was present for every selectmen's meeting until death interrupted him in mid-stride in the winter of 1641." At the January 1641/2 court he was marked "absent, now dead". [C, GMB III:2055-2057; D for the quoted records; Mary Walton Ferris, Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines II (1931) 823-828, https://archive.org/details/dawesgatesancest00ferr_0.] A tradition holds that he and another carried Endicott ashore on their shoulders to save his dignity [T, Dawes-Gates II:824n].
Humphrey Woodbury (c. 1608-1686), 9g-grandfather. He came over as a boy and was brought back by his father in 1628. He was a founder and the first deacon of the Beverly church in 1667. His 1680/1 deposition is the chief witness to the Dorchester Company's settlement. His will (4 Mar 1686) calls his half-brother Peter "my brother Seargent Woodbury" [D abstract, NEHGR 7:322, https://archive.org/details/newenglandhistor007wate]. His widow Elizabeth's will (1 May 1689) remembers their son killed in King Philip's War: "I give unto my two grandchildren Peter ye son of John Woodberry, & to Peter ye son of William Woodberry, 10s apiece out of my estate because they beare ye name of my son Peter that was killed in ye war with Capt. Lartheope by the Indians, & had not had any inheritance among his brethren" [D, NEHGR 7:322].
Beverly men at Bloody Brook, 18 Sept 1675 (collateral). Two brothers of Dick's direct ancestors appear among the 71 slain with Capt. Thomas Lathrop's "Flower of Essex" at Muddy (Bloody) Brook, Deerfield: Peter Woodberry (b. 28 Mar 1652), brother of Thomas Woodbury, and Josiah Dodge, brother of Hannah Dodge [D, list "At Muddy-Brook bridge ye 18 Sept.", Bodge (1906) pp. 136-137]. Another brother, Richard Woodbury, made his will on 1 Aug 1690 "being by God's providence call[ed] out to the serv[ice] of God and the country in the present expedit[ion]" (Phips's attack on Quebec), named his "brs. Thomas and William", and died that year on the return [C, Savage IV:636].
William Dodge (c. 1604 - aft. 1685), 9g-grandfather. He came in the Lion's Whelp in 1629 among the Dorset and Somerset planters sent by the Rev. John White. The Company's second general letter to Endecott, 28 May 1629, asked "that you would appoint unto William Dodge, a skilful and painful husbandman, the charge of a team of horses" [D, quoted in Dodge Genealogy (1894) p. 8]. He was a Beverly selectman, deputy and grand juror. In 1685 he settled his lands on his son William, "paying to my brother if he come to New England and dwell in this town of Beverly £5 per annum" [C, Porter Pedigree p. 58]. His son Capt. William Dodge (1640-1720) served with distinction in the Narragansett campaign (collateral).
Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694), 8g-grandfather. He was once a servant of Robert Keayne, the merchant censured in 1639 for overcharging and founder of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, who remembered him in his long will of 1653 (quoted above). He farmed at "Woodend" in north Lynn by 1649 [C, Rand Genealogy p. 10].
Robert Rand Jr. of Lynn (c. 1653-1717), 7g-grandfather. A Robert Rand was credited for service under Capt. Samuel Brocklebank's company on 24 Mar 1675/6, the company of the "Hungry March" and the Marlborough garrison whose captain was killed at Sudbury a month later [D, Bodge p. 207]. In 1733 the Narragansett grantees list for Lynn shows a Rand soldier with "Robert Rand, son" as claimant, in the township that became Amherst, N.H. [D, Bodge p. 422].
Richard Cheever (c. 1660 - by 1709), 7g-grandfather. A seven-year-old sent from Mercery Lane, Canterbury, to a childless uncle in Boston [T]. In the spring of 1676 he marched with Capt. William Turner's company: "A List of Capt. William Turner's men as they came from Boston and taken at Medfield 1675-6 ... Richard Cheevers" [D, Bodge p. 239]. He was "Richard Cheever 03 12 10", credited under Turner on June 24th 1676 [D, Bodge p. 244]. Turner's company held the Connecticut River towns that spring, and Turner was killed after the Falls Fight of 19 May 1676. Richard's presence at the fight is not shown. Later he served as tithingman, sealer of leather and constable, and as express rider: "the treasurer was ordered to pay him £4 for his having been sent twice with expresses to Piscataqua" (1702), and letters "on her Majesty's service" to Ipswich, Plymouth, Newbury, Piscataqua and New London (1703) [D abstracts, NEHGR 36:309-310]. His uncle Bartholomew Cheever (bp. 1616/7, d. 18 Dec 1693; collateral) was made lieutenant of Capt. Ephraim Savage's company in 1681/2. His house on Hanover Street, left to Richard's son, stayed in the family for two centuries [D/C, NEHGR 36:307-309].
Robert Rand, joiner (1686-1752), 6g-grandfather, is buried in the Granary. His son Richard (1713-1736, Harvard 1734) is also commemorated there (collateral) [C, Rand Genealogy p. 20]. His estate furnished portions to Israel Ellingwood's children in 1753 [D, in archive].
The Ezekiel Cheever question
- Is Daniel Cheever of Cambridge Ezekiel's brother? Not supported; the evidence is against it. Daniel's brother Bartholomew, in one will, calls Daniel "brother" and Ezekiel "cousin". Bartholomew was baptized at Canterbury, son of Richard Cheever, glover. Ezekiel was born in London, 25 Jan 1614/15 [C, Hassam 1879, https://archive.org/details/ezekielcheeverso00hass]. Torrey judged Ezekiel "older than Bartholomew and ... probably his first cousin". Rating for "Daniel was Ezekiel's brother": Disproven as far as the records go.
- Does Susanna Cheever descend from Ezekiel? Disproven. Her father was Bartholomew's nephew Richard, born in Canterbury in 1660. Ezekiel's children are fully recorded (Hassam 1879) and include no Richard. Bartholomew's will treats Ezekiel and Richard as two separate "cousins".
- How are they related? Through the Cheever kin group, in a way the records show but do not define. Hassam: "Their relationship is thus clearly established and their common ancestry proved." Bartholomew left the reversion of his pasture near the Mill Dam to "Cousin Ezekiel Cheever schoolmaster" and the house Richard lived in to Richard. On Torrey's reading, Ezekiel was a first cousin of Susanna's grandfather. That makes Ezekiel Susanna's first cousin twice removed, and Dick's first cousin, ten times removed (Possible: both "first cousin" and the identity of Richard's father are unproven).
3. Famous kin
Relationships are reckoned from Dick (b. 1929). "Half" means the two lines descend from different wives of the shared ancestor.
Through John Woodbury (shared ancestor; Dick's 10g-grandfather). Dick's line: John → Humphrey
(by the first wife). These lines: John → Peter (bp. 19 Sept 1640, by Agnes). All half.
Peter's place: "Peeter, s. John, bp. 19:7m:1640" [D, Salem VR II:441]. Humphrey's will calls him "my brother Seargent Woodbury" [D abstract, NEHGR 7:322]. A. M. Haines (NEHGR 7:322, 1853) also corrects the older error that made Levi descend from Humphrey's son Peter, killed in 1675.
1. Levi Woodbury (1789-1851): Governor of New Hampshire 1823-24, U.S. Senator, Secretary of the Navy 1831-34, Secretary of the Treasury 1834-41, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court 1845-51 (Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_Woodbury). Suggested category: public.
- Line (paternal): Peter Woodbury (1640-1704) → Josiah Woodbury (1682-1746) → Josiah Woodbury

(1789-1851).
- Josiah: "Josiah, s. Dea. Peter and Sary, June 15, 1682" [D, Beverly VR I:388]. A note in the family Bible, written by the younger Josiah: "My father, Josiah Woodbury, was born in the year of our Lord Christ Jesus 1682" [D/C, Woodbury Sketches p. 61].
- Josiah: m. "Josiah, and Lidia Herrick, Apr. 29, 1708" [D, II:352]; "Josiah, s. Josiah and Lidia, Feb. 15, 1708-9" [D, I:388].

- Line (maternal, second descent from Peter): Peter (1640) → Peter (1666-1707) → Peter (1705-1775) → James (1738-1822) → Mary Woodbury (1769-1839), Levi's mother [C, WikiTree Woodbury-600; Beverly VR I:389 "Peter, s. Dea. Peter and Mary, June 20, 1705", I:388 "James, s. Peter and Hannah, June 4, 1738"].
- Confidence: Proven for the paternal steps through Peter b. 1767 [D]; Levi's parentage [C]. Overall Probable-to-proven.
- Relationship: half fifth cousin, six times removed (twice over, the second time half fifth cousin six times removed again through Mary Woodbury's line).
- Additional full line (Probable): shared William Dodge and Elizabeth (Dick's 9g-grandparents). Capt. William Dodge (1640-1720) → Mary Dodge (b. 26 May 1666, "m. Jo. Herrick") [C, Dodge Genealogy p. 16] → Lydia Herrick (1691-1779; m. Josiah Woodbury 1708) [C, Woodbury Sketches p. 157 ("Capt. Joseph Herrick ... was the father of Josiah Woodbury's wife"); WikiTree] → Josiah (1708/9) → Peter (1738) → Peter (1767) → Levi. Sixth cousin, four times removed.
2. Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951): Vice President of the United States 1925-29; Nobel Peace Prize 1925 for the Dawes Plan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_G._Dawes, parents "Civil War General Rufus Dawes and his wife Mary Beman Gates"). Suggested category: public (or presidents, if vice-presidents go there).

Sibyl Shipman (1816-1895) → Mary Beman Gates (1842-1921) → Charles Gates Dawes (1865-1951).
- Sarah: "Sarah, d. Peeter and Sarah (Dodge), Dec. 12, 1668" [D, Beverly VR I:384]; m. 20 Feb 1689 Jonathan Raymond [D/C, Dawes-Gates II:699, 828].
- Rachel Raymond b. 26 Jan 1690, m. 12 Feb 1712/3 Benjamin Ober [C, Dawes-Gates II:700, 607].
- Anna Ober b. 12 Nov 1715, the only surviving child; m. (2) 17 Sept 1740 William Bartlett (1710-1759/60) [C, Dawes-Gates II:607].

- Mary Beman Gates b. 27 Aug 1842, m. 18 Jan 1864 Rufus R. Dawes [C, II:3, 14].
- All steps from one compiled, well-referenced family memorial (Ferris 1931), commissioned by Rufus C. Dawes, Charles's brother. Confidence Probable.
- Relationship: half ninth cousin, twice removed. (Mary Beman Gates also descends from William Woodbury the Old Planter, which does not touch Dick's line.)
3. Henry Adams (1838-1918): historian, author of The Education of Henry Adams (Pulitzer Prize) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Adams). Suggested category: writers.
- Line: Martha Woodbury (bp. 1677) → Rev. John Brown (1696-1742) → Abigail Brown (b. 1732) →

- Confidence Probable.
- Relationship: half sixth cousin, five times removed. The same for his brothers Charles Francis Adams Jr. (1835-1915; railroad president, historian) and Brooks Adams (1848-1927). Charles Francis Adams III (1866-1954, Secretary of the Navy) is one generation further down: half seventh cousin, four times removed. These are a different set of Adamses from the archive's existing Cogswell-line John Adams.
4. Phillips Brooks (1835-1893): rector of Trinity Church, Boston; Bishop of Massachusetts; wrote "O Little Town of Bethlehem" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phillips_Brooks). Suggested category: writers (or public).

Through Thomas Ivory I and Ann [South] (Dick's 9g-grandparents; full kin)
Dick's line: Thomas Ivory II → Tabitha → Robert Rand (joiner) → Susanna Rand → … The famous lines go through Lois Ivory (m. 10 May 1656 Lt. John Burrill, 1631-1703), "dau. of Thomas and Ann (South)" [C, Ellen Mudge Burrill, The Burrill Family of Lynn (1907), https://archive.org/details/burrillfamilyofl00burr; Savage s.v. Ivory: "Lois, wh. m. 10 May 1656, John Burrill, and was mo. of Speaker Burrill, the beloved"].
7. John Burrill (1657-1721): Speaker of the Massachusetts House of Representatives 1707 and 1711-1720; Councillor 1720-21; judge. Governor Dudley said "that post of honor and trust had never been better filled" [C, Burrill 1907]. Suggested category: close (or public).

- Confidence Probable. Relationship: first cousin, nine times removed (first cousin of Tabitha Ivory).
8. Timothy Pickering (1745-1829): Postmaster General 1791-95, Secretary of War 1795, Secretary of State 1795-1800, U.S. Senator and Representative (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timothy_Pickering, parents "Deacon Timothy and Mary Wingate Pickering"). Suggested category: public.
- Line: Lois Ivory → Sarah Burrill (b. 16 May 1661; d. 27 Dec 1747; m. John Pickering of Salem) →
Deacon Timothy Pickering (1703-1778) → Timothy Pickering (1745-1829).
- Sarah Burrill Pickering: "Her mother was Lois, daughter of Thomas Ivory. Her brothers, Hon. John Burrill, the Speaker ... and Hon. Ebenezer Burrill" [C, Ellery & Bowditch, The Pickering Genealogy (1897) I:47-48, https://archive.org/details/pickeringgenealo_01elle]; John Pickering's will: "To my son Timothy Pickering all that was my father's homestead" [D abstract, same]. The Burrill paper (1907): "One of her grandchildren was Hon. Timothy Pickering ... Postmaster General, Secretary of War, Secretary of State".

- Confidence Possible-to-probable (the middle generations rest on one compiled paper). Relationship: fourth cousin, six times removed.
Through the Canterbury Cheevers (Possible)
10. John Cheever (1912-1982): novelist and short-story writer, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award. Suggested category: writers.
- Shared ancestors (Possible): Richard Cheever, glover, and Katharine Willyams of Canterbury. This depends on (a) Daniel of Cambridge being their son, which is Probable (brother of Bartholomew by the wills; Bartholomew bp. as son of Richard), and (b) Susanna Cheever's father being their grandson, which is Probable but his father is unidentified.
- Line: Daniel Cheever (c. 1621-1703/4) → Israel Cheever (bp. 26 Jan 1661/2; m. 1690 Bridget
Woodhead) → William Cheever (victualler, bp. 1697) → William Cheever (b. 27 Aug 1718) → Moses
Cheever (b. 26 Feb 1743/4, Newbury) → Benjamin Hale Cheever (1770-1822) → Aaron Cheever
(1815-1882) → Frederick Lincoln Cheever (1865-1945) → John Cheever (1912-1982).
- First three steps [C, Paige p. 509: "Israel, s. of Daniel ... William, s. of Israel (2), was a victualler, and by w. Miriam, had William, b. 27 Aug. 1718"]. The rest [C, WikiTree Cheever-120 to -126, citing Newbury VR and FamilySearch records]. Wikipedia's article on Ezekiel Cheever instead calls Ezekiel the novelist's ancestor: conflict, unresolved.
- Relationship (if both links hold): eighth cousin, twice removed.
Leads not established
- John Langdon (1741-1819), signer of the Constitution and Governor of New Hampshire, and his brother Woodbury Langdon, descend (per C. L. Woodbury 1904, pp. 156-157) from William Woodbury, brother of John the Old Planter: William → Nicholas → Nicholas → Mary Woodbury (m. Josiah Hall) → Mary Hall (m. John Langdon Sr.) → John Langdon. The shared ancestors would be John and William's unnamed parents (GMB: William "brother of John" [STR 1:26]). Langdon's mother is not named on Wikipedia. Possible; relationship would be fifth cousin, seven times removed.
- Ezekiel Cheever: see §2. Possibly Dick's first cousin, ten times removed.
4. Lookups needing Ancestry / FamilySearch / AmericanAncestors

| Claim | Verdict | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sarah descends from William Woodbury the Old Planter | Disproven | Her line runs Humphrey ← John (Humphrey's deposition). William was John's brother. |
| Joanna Wheeler was of the Salisbury Wheelers (Henry and Abigail (Allen) Wheeler, in the archive) | Disproven | Marriage record: "Joanna Wheler of Concord". Henry's 12 children (Savage 4:497) include no Joanna. |
| Levi Woodbury descends from Peter, son of Humphrey (killed 1675) | Disproven | Haines, NEHGR 7:322 (1853). Levi descends from Peter bp. 1640, son of John. |
| Robert Rand the joiner b. 18 June 1684, Charlestown | Disproven | That is Robert Rand the sailmaker, son of Thomas Rand. The joiner was b. Lynn 6 Oct 1686. |
| Wife of Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694) = Elizabeth Welch, b. Lynn 1633 | Disproven | Elizabeth Welch m. the sailmaker Robert Rand in 1709. The Lynn wife's surname is unknown. |
| Robert Rand of Lynn b. 1622 at Lynn | Unsupported | Lynn was settled in 1629. He was Keayne's servant. |
| Robert Rand of Lynn = son of Robert and Alice Rand of Charlestown | Possible only | Rests on Wyman's unpublished opinion. Alice's will (1683) omits him. |
| Thomas Ivory d. 1697, b. St Clement Danes 1635 | Disproven (death) / unsupported (birth) | Lynn VR: "Thomas, jr., July 18, 1690". |
| Tabitha Ivory b. 20 Apr 1663 | Corrected | Lynn VR: 30:2m:1663 = 30 Apr 1663. |
| Richard Cheever = son of Daniel Cheever of Cambridge | Disproven | Hassam 1882; Paige p. 509. Daniel's children were all born in New England and none is a Richard. |
| Richard Cheever b. 1656, d. 1704 | Corrected | Born Canterbury 1660 [T]. Active after 1704; administration 8 Aug 1709. |
| Susanna Cheever descends from Ezekiel Cheever | Disproven | Ezekiel and Richard are separate "cousins" in Bartholomew's 1693 will. Ezekiel had no son Richard. |
| Daniel Cheever of Cambridge = Ezekiel's brother | Disproven as far as the records go | Bartholomew (Daniel's brother) calls Ezekiel "cousin". Torrey: probably first cousin. |
| Sarah Slater's mother = Susanna Mulberry; grandparents Capt. Benjamin Mulberry (1691-1767) and Anne Everton | Disproven as recorded | Susanna Mulberry m. Malachy Salter in 1744 (RC 28 p. 262; DCB) and d. Halifax 1794. The Mulberry family (Benjamin b. 21 Nov 1691, son of John and Abigail, RC 9; m. Ann Everton 1713, RC 28; "master of a ship sailing from Boston", Stairs p. 238) is the Salters' and Holmeses' ancestry, not the Slaters'. |
| Sarah Slater b. 25 Aug 1744, Boston | Unsupported | No Slater births in RC 24. The date matches no record found. |
| Sarah Woodbury d. Nov 1788 aged 98 | Unproven, suspect | Beverly records her brother William, buried 18 Oct 1788, aged 91. No Sarah Allen death. |
| Edward C. and William H. Pickering, astronomers, as Burrill–Ivory kin | Not established | No link to the Salem Pickerings found (Wikipedia names only their parents). |
| A Salter-for-Slater misreading of Sarah's own surname | No evidence | RC 30 reads "Slater". Her known associates (Stoddard, Stillman) point to Boston Slaters. |
Side notes for the Ellingwood file
- Sarah Woodbury's uncle Jonathan Woodbury (1682-1774, son of Thomas) married "Eliner Elinwood", 25 Mar 1708 (Beverly VR II:352; Porter Pedigree p. 59). Their daughter Eliner (b. 4 Feb 1711/12, Beverly VR I:387) is very probably the Eleanor Woodbury who married Sarah's son Ralph Ellingwood (Ralph Ellingwood) in 1734/6 [I]. That made the bride both a first cousin of Ralph's mother and, if Eliner Elinwood was a sister of Ralph III, a first cousin of Ralph. Eliner Elinwood's parents are not in the archive (she is not among Ralph II's recorded children). Open question.
- Peter Woodbury of Amherst, Levi Woodbury's grandfather, settled in Narragansett No. 3 (Amherst, N.H.). That is the same township whose 1733 grantee list carries "Robert Rand, son" for the Lynn Rand soldier.

Ratings: **Proven / Probable / Possible / Disproven**.Dates as the records give them (Old Style double years kept).---## Headlines1. **Woodbury: the Old Planter is John Woodbury, not William.** Sarah Woodbury descends fromJohn Woodbury (Cape Ann 1624, Salem 1626, the colony's agent to England 1627-28) through hiseldest son Humphrey (by John's first wife), Humphrey's son Thomas, and Thomas's son William(b. Salem 17 Sept 1662), who married **Joanna Wheeler of Concord** in 1689. Humphrey's owndeposition of 1680/1 names "my father, John Woodberye". William Woodbury the Old Planter wasJohn's brother, not an ancestor.2. **Joanna Wheeler was "of Concord"**: the Beverly marriage record says so. She was very probablyJohanna, born at Concord 21 Dec 1671 to John and Sarah (Larkin) Wheeler. She is **not** of theSalisbury Wheelers already in the archive (Henry Wheeler and Abigail Allen had no Joanna).3. **Levi Woodbury is kin, but only through John Woodbury's second marriage**: Levi descends twicefrom Peter Woodbury (bp. 1640), John's son by Agnes. Dick descends from Humphrey, John's son byhis first wife, so Dick and Levi are **half** fifth cousins, six times removed. A second, full, line runs through William Dodge (Dick's 9th-great-grandfather, through Hannah Dodge).4. **The same Peter Woodbury line brings in Vice-President Charles G. Dawes, Henry Adams and hisbrothers, Bishop Phillips Brooks, Justice Horace Gray and Ward Chipman**, all half kin throughJohn Woodbury.5. **Rand: the tree has merged two Robert Rands.** Susanna Rand's father, Robert Rand the Bostonjoiner, was born at Lynn 6 Oct 1686, son of Robert Rand Jr. and Tabitha Ivory. The tree's"born 18 June 1684, Charlestown" belongs to a different Robert, a sailmaker, son of Thomas Randof Charlestown, who married **Elizabeth Welch** in 1709. "Elizabeth Welch" has then been pushedback onto the wife of Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694), whose surname is unknown.6. **Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694) had been a servant of Robert Keayne**, Boston's notoriousmerchant: Keayne's will (1653) leaves 40s "to Robert Rand of Lyn sometime my servant". Hisdescent from Robert and Alice Rand of Charlestown is only **Possible**.7. **Cheever: Susanna Cheever does not descend from Ezekiel Cheever.** Her father Richard Cheever,Boston cordwainer, was born in Canterbury about 1660, a nephew sent for in 1668 by his childlessuncle Bartholomew Cheever. Bartholomew's will (1693) names "brother Daniel Cheever" and"cousins Ezekiel Cheever, schoolmaster, and Richard Cheever". Daniel of Cambridge was thereforeBartholomew's brother, Richard's uncle, and **not** Richard's father (Hassam 1882) and notEzekiel's brother. Torrey (TAG 1934) found the family in Canterbury: Bartholomew bp. 1616/7, sonof Richard Cheever, glover, and Katharine Willyams (m. 1612). Ezekiel was "probably his firstcousin". So the schoolmaster is a collateral cousin of Susanna's family, about Dick's firstcousin ten times removed (Possible).8. **Ivory: Speaker John Burrill (1657-1721) was Tabitha Ivory's first cousin**; Secretary of State**Timothy Pickering** and Senator **James Burrill Jr.** of Rhode Island also descend from Thomasand Ann Ivory, Dick's 9th-great-grandparents. Thomas Ivory, Tabitha's father, died 18 July 1690,not 1697.9. **Slater: the Mulberry/Everton ancestry in the tree belongs to someone else.** Susanna Mulberry(b. Boston 1725/6, d. Halifax 1794) married **Malachy Salter** (1715/16-1781), the Halifaxmerchant and assemblyman, on 26 July 1744. "Salter" has been read as "Slater". Nothing tiesher to Sarah Slater who married Richard Ellingwood in 1766. New lead: **Mary Slater married AsaStoddard 24 Nov 1765** (by Rev. Samuel Stillman). Asa Stoddard, bricklayer, was surety on SarahEllingwood's administration bond in 1784, and Stillman married her to Isaac Downes. Mary waspossibly Sarah's sister.---## 1. His father is notidentified. Bartholomew's will calls him "cousin", which then often meant nephew, and leaves himthe house he lived in for life [D abstract]. The Bible calls him "his uncle Barth°" [T]. Torrey,TAG 11 (1934) 118-120: "Richard Cheever, nephew of Bartholomew Cheever, born in Canterbury, 1660... has not been fully identified. Paige's list ofDaniel's children (Mary 1645/6 ... Elizabeth 1672) has no Richard [C, Paige, *History ofCambridge* (1877) p. 509, https://archive.org/details/historyofcambrid00paig]. The tree's"Richard b. 1656" matches Daniel's daughter Mary, b. 6 Oct 1656. Notable ancestors on these lines**John Woodbury, Old Planter (d. 1641/2), Dick's 10g-grandfather.** He was among the DorchesterCompany men who settled Cape Ann in 1624, and one of Roger Conant's "honest and prudent men" whomoved the remnant to Naumkeag (Salem) in 1626. In the autumn of 1627 he went back to England "toexplain to those interested, financially and otherwise, the condition, needs and prospects of thesettlement", which made him, in Dawes-Gates's words, "the first envoy from this colony to the mothercountry". He returned in June 1628, three months before Endicott, bringing his son Humphrey. RichardBrackenbury, who came with Endicott, deposed that "we came ashore, at a place now called Salem, the6th of September 1628" and found John Woodbury among the settlers. He was sworn constable 28 Sept1630, admitted freeman 18 May 1631, received one of the five 200-acre Old Planters' farms at the headof Bass River (25 Jan 1635/6, with Trask, Conant, Palfrey and Balch), was deputy to the General Court1635-1639 and a Salem selectman 1636-41. GMB: "He was present for every selectmen's meeting until deathinterrupted him in mid-stride in the winter of 1641." At the January 1641/2 court he was marked"absent, now dead". [C, GMB III:2055-2057; D for the quoted records; Mary Walton Ferris,*Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines* II (1931) 823-828,https://archive.org/details/dawesgatesancest00ferr_0.] A tradition holds that he and anothercarried Endicott ashore on their shoulders to save his dignity [T, Dawes-Gates II:824n].**Humphrey Woodbury (c. 1608-1686), 9g-grandfather.** He came over as a boy and was brought back byhis father in 1628. He was a founder and the first deacon of the Beverly church in 1667. His1680/1 deposition is the chief witness to the Dorchester Company's settlement. His will (4 Mar 1686)calls his half-brother Peter "my brother Seargent Woodbury" [D abstract, NEHGR 7:322,https://archive.org/details/newenglandhistor007wate]. His widow Elizabeth's will (1 May 1689)remembers their son killed in King Philip's War: "I give unto my two grandchildren Peter ye son ofJohn Woodberry, & to Peter ye son of William Woodberry, 10s apiece out of my estate because theybeare ye name of my son Peter that was killed in ye war with Capt. Lartheope by the Indians, & hadnot had any inheritance among his brethren" [D, NEHGR 7:322].**Beverly men at Bloody Brook, 18 Sept 1675 (collateral).** Two brothers of Dick's direct ancestorsappear among the 71 slain with Capt. Thomas Lathrop's "Flower of Essex" at Muddy (Bloody) Brook,Deerfield: **Peter Woodberry** (b. 28 Mar 1652), brother of Thomas Woodbury, and **Josiah Dodge**,brother of Hannah Dodge [D, list "At Muddy-Brook bridge ye 18 Sept.", Bodge (1906) pp. 136-137].Another brother, **Richard Woodbury**, made his will on 1 Aug 1690 "being by God's providence call[ed]out to the serv[ice] of God and the country in the present expedit[ion]" (Phips's attack on Quebec),named his "brs. Thomas and William", and died that year on the return [C, Savage IV:636].**William Dodge (c. 1604 - aft. 1685), 9g-grandfather.** He came in the *Lion's Whelp* in 1629 amongthe Dorset and Somerset planters sent by the Rev. John White. The Company's second general letter toEndecott, 28 May 1629, asked "that you would appoint unto William Dodge, a skilful and painfulhusbandman, the charge of a team of horses" [D, quoted in Dodge Genealogy (1894) p. 8]. He was aBeverly selectman, deputy and grand juror. In 1685 he settled his lands on his son William,"paying to my brother if he come to New England and dwell in this town of Beverly £5 per annum"[C, Porter Pedigree p. 58]. His son Capt. William Dodge (1640-1720) served with distinction in theNarragansett campaign (collateral).**Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694), 8g-grandfather.** He was once a servant of Robert Keayne, themerchant censured in 1639 for overcharging and founder of the Ancient and Honorable ArtilleryCompany, who remembered him in his long will of 1653 (quoted above). He farmed at "Woodend" innorth Lynn by 1649 [C, Rand Genealogy p. 10].**Robert Rand Jr. of Lynn (c. 1653-1717), 7g-grandfather.** A Robert Rand was credited for serviceunder Capt. Samuel Brocklebank's company on 24 Mar 1675/6, the company of the "Hungry March" and theMarlborough garrison whose captain was killed at Sudbury a month later [D, Bodge p. 207]. In 1733 theNarragansett grantees list for Lynn shows a Rand soldier with "Robert Rand, son" as claimant, in thetownship that became Amherst, N.H. [D, Bodge p. 422].**Richard Cheever (c. 1660 - by 1709), 7g-grandfather.** A seven-year-old sent from Mercery Lane,Canterbury, to a childless uncle in Boston [T]. In the spring of 1676 he marched with Capt. WilliamTurner's company: "A List of Capt. William Turner's men as they came from Boston and taken at Medfield1675-6 ... Richard Cheevers" [D, Bodge p. 239]. He was "Richard Cheever 03 12 10", credited underTurner on June 24th 1676 [D, Bodge p. 244]. Turner's company held the Connecticut River towns thatspring, and Turner was killed after the Falls Fight of 19 May 1676. Richard's presence at the fight isnot shown. Later he served as tithingman, sealer of leather and constable, and as express rider:"the treasurer was ordered to pay him £4 for his having been sent twice with expresses toPiscataqua" (1702), and letters "on her Majesty's service" to Ipswich, Plymouth, Newbury,Piscataqua and New London (1703) [D abstracts, NEHGR 36:309-310]. His uncle **Bartholomew Cheever**(bp. 1616/7, d. 18 Dec 1693; collateral) was made lieutenant of Capt. Ephraim Savage's company in1681/2. His house on Hanover Street, left to Richard's son, stayed in the family for two centuries[D/C, NEHGR 36:307-309].**Robert Rand, joiner (1686-1752), 6g-grandfather**, is buried in the Granary. His son Richard(1713-1736, Harvard 1734) is also commemorated there (collateral) [C, Rand Genealogy p. 20]. Hisestate furnished portions to Israel Ellingwood's children in 1753 [D, in archive].### The Ezekiel Cheever question- **Is Daniel Cheever of Cambridge Ezekiel's brother? Not supported; the evidence is against it.**Daniel's brother Bartholomew, in one will, calls Daniel "brother" and Ezekiel "cousin". Bartholomewwas baptized at Canterbury, son of Richard Cheever, glover. Ezekiel was born in London, 25 Jan1614/15 [C, Hassam 1879, https://archive.org/details/ezekielcheeverso00hass]. Torrey judgedEzekiel "older than Bartholomew and ... probably his first cousin". Rating for "Daniel wasEzekiel's brother": **Disproven as far as the records go.**- **Does Susanna Cheever descend from Ezekiel? Disproven.** Her father was Bartholomew's nephewRichard, born in Canterbury in 1660. Ezekiel's children are fully recorded (Hassam 1879) andinclude no Richard. Bartholomew's will treats Ezekiel and Richard as two separate "cousins".- **How are they related?** Through the Cheever kin group, in a way the records show but do notdefine. Hassam: "Their relationship is thus clearly established and their common ancestry proved."Bartholomew left the reversion of his pasture near the Mill Dam to "Cousin Ezekiel Cheeverschoolmaster" and the house Richard lived in to Richard. On Torrey's reading, Ezekiel was a firstcousin of Susanna's grandfather. That makes Ezekiel Susanna's first cousin twice removed, and Dick's**first cousin, ten times removed** (**Possible**: both "first cousin" and the identity of Richard'sfather are unproven).---## 3. Checked and ruled out| Claim | Verdict | Why ||---|---|---|| Sarah descends from **William Woodbury** the Old Planter | **Disproven** | Her line runs Humphrey ← John (Humphrey's deposition). William was John's brother. || Joanna Wheeler was of the **Salisbury Wheelers** (Henry and Abigail (Allen) Wheeler, in the archive) | **Disproven** | Marriage record: "Joanna Wheler of Concord". Henry's 12 children (Savage 4:497) include no Joanna. || Levi Woodbury descends from **Peter, son of Humphrey** (killed 1675) | **Disproven** | Haines, NEHGR 7:322 (1853). Levi descends from Peter bp. 1640, son of John. || Robert Rand the joiner **b. 18 June 1684, Charlestown** | **Disproven** | That is Robert Rand the sailmaker, son of Thomas Rand. The joiner was b. Lynn 6 Oct 1686. || Wife of Robert Rand of Lynn (d. 1694) = **Elizabeth Welch**, b. Lynn 1633 | **Disproven** | Elizabeth Welch m. the sailmaker Robert Rand in 1709. Her known associates (Stoddard, Stillman) point to Boston Slaters. |### Side notes for the Ellingwood file- Sarah Woodbury's uncle **Jonathan Woodbury** (1682-1774, son of Thomas) married "**ElinerElinwood**", 25 Mar 1708 (Beverly VR II:352; Porter Pedigree p. 59). Their daughter **Eliner**(b. 4 Feb 1711/12, Beverly VR I:387) is very probably the Eleanor Woodbury who married Sarah's son**Ralph Ellingwood** (`ralph-ellingwood-1716`) in 1734/6 [I]. That made the bride both a firstcousin of Ralph's mother and, if Eliner Elinwood was a sister of Ralph III, a first cousin ofRalph. Eliner Elinwood's parents are not in the archive (she is not among Ralph II's recordedchildren). **Open question.**- Peter Woodbury of Amherst, Levi Woodbury's grandfather, settled in **Narragansett No. 3**(Amherst, N.H.).
