John Hale's testimony against Dorcas Hoar, September 1692
About it
The minister of Beverly’s own deposition, in his hand, “John Hale aged 56 years Testifieth 6.7.1692.” He gives the court Dorcas Hoar’s fortune-telling, her book of palmistry, and the thefts from his house fourteen years before, “conveying goods out of my house” to the Hoars’. Ellen (Lynn) Ellinwood, by then Mrs. William Bath, had testified in that theft case in 1678. The Ellinwoods sat under Hale at Beverly, and none of them appears in the trial papers.
