Notes
Sister of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood. She is “Mary I.,” eighteen and at school, in her parents’ Chicago household in 1900 (record). In Spokane she taught piano: “Mary had studied piano and helped support the family with her piano teaching in which she was unusually skilled as a teacher,” Cudge wrote, and spent long years “in loving care of her mother.” Neither she nor her sister Beatrice had married when Cudge met the family in 1920. She was very probably the “Mary [I.] Short” who witnessed Ruth’s wedding in 1921 with their mother (record).
