"William, s. Thomas and Hannah, Sept. 17, 1662" (the Beverly records; the Salem records have it too). Probable rather than proven only because the man who married Joanna Wheeler is taken to be this William.

Family

Father
Thomas Woodbury d. bef. 1719

The birth record names Thomas and Hannah. That this William is the one who married Joanna Wheeler is the Porter Pedigree's ("William Woodbury, 1662-1725. Married Joanna Wheeler. 9 children") and fits the records: he was "William, jr." in 1694, beside his uncle William (b. 1651), and "sr." by 1705, and he named sons Israel and Thomas for his brother and father. The other William of Beverly, b. 1665 to William and Judith, has nothing to link him. Thomas Woodbury's probate (1719) or William's will would settle it.

Notes

Father of Sarah (Woodbury) Ellingwood, Ralph Ellinwood III’s wife. The eldest son of Thomas Woodbury and Hannah (Dodge) Porter, born at Salem in 1662, the year after their marriage. On 29 Sept 1689 he married “Joanna Wheler of Concord” at Beverly (record).

Their children, born at Beverly: Sarah, 14 Dec 1690; Hannah, 14 Jan 1692/3, who died the next March (her gravestone calls her a daughter of “William, jr.”); Israel, 26 Dec 1694; William, 11 July 1697; Thomas, 5 Sept 1700; Hugh, 18 Mar 1703; Lois, 1 May 1705 (“William [sr.]”); Elisha, 21 Feb 1706/7; and Mihill, 18 Jan 1712/13. Sarah named her first son Israel, after her brother, and the daughter of her second marriage Joanna, after her mother.

He died at Beverly in November 1725. His widow lived another twenty-two years.

Open questions

  • His will (Essex Probate, 6 Nov 1725), which should name “daughter Sarah” (Ellinwood or Allen) and settle Sarah’s parentage.
