About it

“The Soveraignty & Goodness of God, Together, With the Faithfulness of His Promises Displayed; Being a Narrative Of the Captivity and Restauration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson,” printed at Cambridge by Samuel Green in 1682, inside a mourning border. Mary Rowlandson, wife of the minister of Lancaster, was taken when the town was attacked on 10 February 1675/6 and was held for eleven weeks before she was ransomed; her account became the first American captivity narrative and one of the most read books of its time. This copy belonged to Thomas Prince’s New-England Library, now in the Boston Public Library; the first edition is lost but for a few leaves. Thomas Rowlandson, son of Thomas Rowlandson of Salisbury and brother of Martha (Rowlandson) Ellinwood, was killed in the same attack on Lancaster, and Mary Rowlandson was very probably Martha’s aunt by marriage.
