Notes

Ralph III: of Beverly, a mariner on the Jamaica run, married at seventeen. He built a barn and a well on his father’s land, and his wife was received to full communion at Beverly, “Wife of Ralph Ellenwood Jun’”, on 20 January 1727/8 (record). That winter he was lost at sea coming home from Jamaica. He died intestate; his widow administered as “Sarah Ellinwood alias Allen” after her intention with Zebulon Allen in 1730, and when the children came of age the estate was divided: “Israel 2 shares, Ralph, Daniel, Esther, Abia, and Sarah West, 1 share each”, with a note of 6 December 1743, “Israel Ellingwood of Boston, coaster, for self & guardian of brother Daniel, a minor” (record).

He is the Ralph between Ralph II and Israel. Leonard Ellinwood’s genealogy (1963) said this Ralph “Died young” and made Israel a son of Ralph II by a third wife, Sarah Woodbury. Three records show otherwise: the Beverly register’s family of Ralph and Sarah Ellingwood, with Israel their second child; the 1743 division of this Ralph’s estate, giving Israel the eldest son’s double share; and Ralph II’s will of 1741, which calls Israel and his brother Ralph “my Two Grandsons” and their father “my Son Ralph Elinwood Decd” (record). The Beverly baptism of 1714 names Israel’s father “Ralph j[r]” (record). Madeline MacDonald reached the same conclusion in The Maine Genealogist (1995, 2000; not seen, source). The case is closed (research/decisions.md, 4 October 2026).
