Ellingwood line: the wives' families (Pattullo and Short, Adams and Deyoe, Rice and Sylvester)
Research report for the connections of Richard Everett "Dick" Ellingwood Jr. (1929-2019, Richard Everett Ellingwood Jr.). Read-only research; nothing in the archive was edited.
Evidence labels: [D] documented (a record, or a published transcript, abstract or index of one), [C] compiled (a genealogy, a family tree, Wikipedia), [I] inferred, [T] tradition. Ratings: proven / probable / possible / disproven.
A correction to the brief, first. In the archive, Ruth Short is Dick's mother (Richard Everett Ellingwood Jr.: mother Ruth Ethelwyn Short), not his grandmother. Each generation in the brief is therefore one or two too high:
| Person | Brief says | Actual place in Dick's family |
|---|---|---|
| Ruth Short (1893-1974) | grandmother | mother |
| Mary Pattullo (1852-1932) | — | grandmother |
| Jennie Elliott (1857-1929) | great-grandmother | grandmother (Cudge's mother) |
| Susan Adams (1837-1926) | — | great-grandmother |
| Jane Deyoe (1808/9-1892) | — | 2x great-grandmother |
| Mary Abigail Rice (1822-1874) | 3x great-grandmother | great-grandmother (Finley's mother) |
| Rufus Rice (1794-1840) | — | 2x great-grandfather |
| James Rice and Abigail Warren | — | 3x great-grandparents |
All relationships below are worked out from Dick.
Summary
- Pattullo: settled. Mary (Pattullo) Short was the youngest child of Halkett Pattullo and Jane Robson, and so a full sister of George Robson Pattullo, father of Premier Duff Pattullo. Ruth Short and Duff Pattullo were first cousins, exactly as Cudge's memoir has it ("Ruth's cousin, Duff Pattullo", memoir p. G37). Two records name Mary's father as Halkett Pattullo (her 1879 marriage and her 1932 death certificate), and a published study of her brother Thomas (Bourdon, BC Studies 185, 2015) names her as the youngest of the family. Famous kin from this: Duff Pattullo (Premier of BC), George Pattullo (writer, Duff's brother), and Ruth's uncle Andrew Pattullo (Ontario MPP, editor of the Woodstock Sentinel-Review). All are proven on the Pattullo side.
- Deyoe: probably the New Paltz Huguenots. The Saratoga Deyoes do descend from the New Paltz family, per Hasbrouck and Heidgerd, The Deyo (Deyoe) Family (1958). The line runs Jane Maria Deyoe ← Peter J. Deyoe of Wilton ← James Deyoe of Pittstown and Stillwater ← Peter Deyo (bp. Kingston 1739, d. Pittstown 1812) ← Jacobus ← Christian ← Pierre Deyo ← Chrétien Deyo; Pierre and Chrétien were both patentees of New Paltz. The New Paltz end is documented in church records. The three Saratoga links rest on will abstracts in a compiled genealogy, and one of them (James to Peter) has a conflict, so the line is probable. That gives possible famous kin through the Hasbroucks: Capt. Washington Irving Chambers, Ezra H. Fitch of Abercrombie & Fitch, Rep. Jay LeFevre, Abraham Bruyn Hasbrouck, Laurence H. Snyder, and Fred and Kate Upton. All are rated possible.
- Rice: a mistake corrected and a new line found. Rufus Rice did not die in Whiteside County, Illinois. In 1840 he was at Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, and he is buried at Old Hogan Hill Cemetery there. That fits his 1846 Dearborn estate and settles the archive's open question. A Maine record of his birth (Freeport, 16 Jul 1794) names his parents James Rice and Abigail. His wife was Mary Sylvester: they married at Durham, Maine, on 10 Oct 1819. She was probably a daughter of Job Sylvester Jr. and Lydia Phillips, who settled at Manchester, Indiana [I]. Job Jr.'s father, Job Sylvester (1742-1832), was a Revolutionary soldier with an 1818 pension (DAR Lineage Book 59). Abigail Warren of Scarborough has no known parents, and nothing links her to Richard Warren of the Mayflower.
1. Pattullo and Short (Ontario)
Pedigree findings
Ruth Ethelwyn Short (13 Jan 1893, Woodstock - 13 Feb 1974, Spokane), Ruth Ethelwyn Short
- Parents John Gerald Short and Mary Pattullo: the archive rates this probable. It is now
backed by a set of siblings that matches the memoir's. WikiTree
Short-3745andPattullo-22list John and Mary's children as Jeffrey Robson (b. 18 Aug 1880; Cudge's partner "Jeff"), Mary Isabella (b. 1 Oct 1881; the piano teacher), Jeanne Beatrice (b. 22 May 1884, d. Jan 1969, Spokane; "Bea", d. Feb 1969 in the memoir), Arthur Wendell (1 Apr 1886 - 26 Aug 1887; "a brother who died young"), and Ruth Ethelwyn (b. 13 Jan 1893) [C]. - The names fit as well [I]. "Jeffrey Robson" joins the two grandmothers' surnames: Mary Jeffrey (John Short's mother) and Jane Robson (Mary Pattullo's mother). Ruth's middle name echoes her cousin Ethelwyn Pattullo (b. 1868), Duff's eldest sister.
- To settle it: Ruth's 1893 Ontario birth registration (Oxford County), on FamilySearch or Ancestry.
John Gerald Short (22 Dec 1845 - 20 Oct 1916, Spokane), John Gerald Short
- Parents John Short (8 Aug 1808 - 4 Oct 1858, Orono) and Mary Jeffrey (8 Jan 1809,
Berwick-upon-Tweed - 15 Nov 1883, Woodstock), per WikiTree
Short-3592andJeffrey-573[C]. Those profiles cite Ward Skinner's compiled Descendants of William Jeffrey and the 1861 and 1881 censuses. - Conflict: the birthplace. The archive and the tree have Woodstock. But his father was
postmaster at Newcastle, Clarke Township, Durham County, C.W., from 1845. W. H. Smith,
Canada: Past, Present and Future (1851), lists "Short, John, postmaster ... Newcastle" in the
Durham County directory [D] (archive.org
canadapastpresen01smit). His siblings were born at Newcastle in 1842, 1844 and 1848, and the family moved to Woodstock only after 1858 (WikiTree, citing Skinner). John Gerald was most likely born at Newcastle, not Woodstock [I]. The 1861 census (Cobourg) and the 1891 census (Woodstock) would settle it. - 1891 census, Woodstock: John, Mary and the three eldest children; he is an "organs"
manufacturer (WikiTree summary of the census) [C]. This agrees with "organ manufacturer" in
Ellingwood_Master_Research.md. - New record: the British Columbia Gazette, Nov-Dec 1910 and Apr 1911. "John G. Short,
labourer [later 'book-keeper'], of Spokane, Wash." and "Mary Short, wife of John G. Short, of
Spokane" each gave notice of intent to apply to purchase land in the District of Yale [D].

Mary Pattullo (1852, Caledon - 23 Nov 1932, Spokane), Mary Pattullo
- Father Halkett Pattullo: proven. Two independent records name him:
- the 1879 Ontario marriage registration, "Halket Pattullo in entry for John G Short and Mary Pattullo" (FamilySearch FMN5-RMJ) [D];
- the Washington death certificate, Spokane, 23 Nov 1932, ref. 1214, "Halkett Pattullo in entry for Mary Pattullo Short" (FamilySearch N35X-8MK; FHL 2,022,972) [D].
- A third, independent source: Bourdon, "Barkerville's Thomas Robson Pattullo in Life and Death", BC Studies 185 (Spring 2015), pp. 49-77, at pp. 53-54. "Pattullo was the second of nine children born to Jane (Robson) Pattullo (1809-79) and Halkett Pattullo (1810-65)... In 1855, the family moved to Blenheim Township, Oxford County... Three sisters are referenced as well. Mary (b. 1852), the youngest, seems to have been a favourite." Thomas's 1876 will left "siblings Andrew and Mary two thousand dollars each" (p. 71, citing BC Archives GR-1052, will #5704). His photograph with "sister Mary" is at the Woodstock Museum (1988.21.04) [C, citing records]. PDF: https://ojs.library.ubc.ca/index.php/bcstudies/article/download/186059/185452
- Mother: Jane Robson (b. c. 1809, Eckford, Roxburghshire; d. 4 Apr 1879, Oxford County),
WikiTree
Robson-1781[C], and Bourdon [C]. - Conflict: her birth date. The tree and the archive have 17 Sep 1852; WikiTree has 17 Jul 1852 (source not stated). Caledon fits either way: the family was there until 1855, and her brother Andrew was born at Caledon in 1850.
- 1910: WikiTree says she was with her children in Chicago (1910 US census, "Mary P. Short"), but the BC Gazette puts her at Spokane in 1910-11. She probably spent time in both [C/D].
Halkett Pattullo (bapt. 1809, Midlothian; d. 7 Jun 1865, Oxford County), WikiTree Pattullo-42
- Scottish baptism, "Hacket Patullo, 1809" (FamilySearch XTRL-49B) [D index]. Married Jane Robson on 12 Dec 1833 in the Home District [C]. Named as the father in the Oxford County marriages of his children Jane (Rennie, 1862), Isabella (Laidlaw, 1862), Alexander (1866) and Margaret (Campbell, 1868); of G. Robson Pattullo (1868, Middlesex); of Mary (1879); and of Andrew (Brantford, 1889) [D indexes, cited on WikiTree]. Buried at Christian Cemetery, Princeton, Oxford County (Find a Grave 195354125).
- Conflict: Wikipedia's Duff Pattullo article has him "1809-c. 1855". Bourdon and the gravestone have 1865.
- Children (WikiTree, with Bourdon): Alexander (1835-1880, Sanilac, Mich.), Thomas Robson (1837-1879, Barkerville), Jane (Mrs. Rennie, b. 1839), [William, b. 1841, in Bourdon only], Margaret (Mrs. A. J. Campbell, b. 1842), Isabella (Mrs. John Laidlaw, 1843-1924), George Robson (8 Apr 1845 - 23 Apr 1922), Lucinda F. (Mrs. Findlay, b. 1846), Andrew (1850-1903), Mary (1852-1932). Bourdon says "nine children" and includes William; WikiTree omits William. Both include George and Mary.
- His parents, Alexander Pattullo (c. 1773, Dundee - 8 Dec 1828, Caledon) and Jean Watson
(b. 3 May 1771, Prestonpans - d. 8 Aug 1852, Caledon), "emigrated from Scotland in 1820 and
farmed forty hectares in Caledon, Peel County" (Bourdon p. 54; WikiTree
Pattullo-87) [C].
Mary Pattullo's place in the family: a full sister of George Robson Pattullo. George's Ontario death registration (Woodstock, 23 Apr 1922) names his father as "Halbert [Halkett] Pattullo" (FamilySearch J6PP-DJX) [D]. His 1868 marriage to Mary Ann Rounds names "Halket Patulls" (FamilySearch Q2YM-SXL4) [D]. Bourdon names both as children of Halkett and Jane (Robson) [C]. Rating: proven. Duff Pattullo was therefore Ruth Short's first cousin, and Dick's first cousin once removed.
Famous kin: Pattullo
Shared ancestors for each: Halkett Pattullo (1809-1865) and Jane Robson (c. 1809-1879), who
are not in the archive. In the archive's terms: shared_name: Halkett Pattullo and Jane Robson,
start: mary-pattullo-1852.
Thomas Dufferin "Duff" Pattullo (1873-1956)
- Why notable: 22nd Premier of British Columbia (1933-1941), Liberal; author of BC's "Little New Deal". Sources: Wikipedia, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duff_Pattullo; Robin Fisher, Duff Pattullo of British Columbia (UTP, 1991), pp. 3-8. The Dictionary of Canadian Biography has no published entry for him (volume XVIII, 1951-60, is not online), nor for his father or uncle.
- Category: public (or close).
- Line from the shared ancestors' child:
- George Robson Pattullo (1845-1922). His father is named in his death registration (J6PP-DJX) and his 1868 marriage (Q2YM-SXL4) [D].
- Thomas Dufferin Pattullo (1873-1956). Born 19 Jan 1873, Woodstock, "to George Robson Pattullo
(1845-1922) and Mary Ann 'Minnie' Rounds" (Wikipedia; Fisher) [C]. He is in his father's
household as "Thomas D." in the 1881 census, Woodstock (E), p. 13, dwelling 64, LAC item
4255745 (cited on WikiTree
Pattullo-36) [D].
- Family side: Mary Pattullo (1852-1932) → Ruth Ethelwyn Short (1893-1974) → Dick.
- Overall confidence: proven from Halkett down both sides. Ruth's own parentage is the one link the archive rates probable, and it is strongly supported. Cudge's memoir independently calls Duff "Ruth's cousin".
- Relationship to Dick: first cousin once removed. Cudge visited him in Victoria in 1937
(memoir, p. G37). The gallery already holds his portrait (
gallery/duff-pattullo-portrait.md).
George Pattullo (1879-1967)
- Why notable: Canadian-American journalist and fiction writer for the Saturday Evening Post and McClure's; the first to report the wartime heroism of Sgt. Alvin C. York; his stories were the source of the film Gasoline Gus (1921); worked with photographer Erwin E. Smith on cowboy stories (1908-10). Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Pattullo_(writer) (citing Drewry 1924, Dubbs 2017, and the Texas State Historical Association).
- Category: writers.
- Line: George Robson Pattullo (1845-1922) → George Pattullo (b. 9 Oct 1879, Woodstock; d. 29 Jul 1967, New York), "son of George Robson Pattullo and Mary (Rounds) Pattullo" (Wikipedia) [C]. "George R." appears twice in the 1881 Woodstock household, father and son (LAC 4255745) [D].
- Overall confidence: proven.
- Relationship to Dick: first cousin once removed (Ruth's first cousin; Duff's brother).
Andrew Pattullo (1850-1903)
- Why notable: Liberal MPP for Oxford North (Legislative Assembly of Ontario, 12 Sep 1896 -
29 Dec 1903); owner and editor of the Woodstock Sentinel-Review; president of the Canadian
Press Association (1890-92); first president of the Ontario Good Roads Association.

Cochrane: born 1850 in Caledon Township; educated in Blenheim Township, at Dundas, at St. Catharines, and at University College London; junior partner in the Sentinel from 1875 and owner from 1880; "the firm now consists of himself and his nephew, Andrew Laidlaw". - Category: public (or close).
- Line: Andrew Pattullo himself (a child of the shared ancestors). He was born at Caledon on 25 Aug 1850 (WikiTree), and his brother Thomas's will names "siblings Andrew and Mary" (Bourdon p. 71) [D, abstracted]. His 1889 Brantford marriage names his father Halkett [D].
- Conflict: his death date. OLA and Wikipedia have 29 Dec 1903, London, England (buried at Highgate); WikiTree has 28 Nov 1903.
- Overall confidence: proven.
- Relationship to Dick: granduncle (great-uncle): the brother of Dick's grandmother Mary
(Pattullo) Short. Note: the archive's
sexfield is needed for this entry.
Close kin with their own stories (for bio or "close")
- George Robson Pattullo (1845-1922): granduncle. Editor of the Woodstock Sentinel;
president of the Canadian Press Association 1884-85 (The Canadian Press Association ...
Excursion Party of '85, archive.org
canadianpressass00cana); registrar of Oxford County (1901 census, "Registrar"); president of the Ontario Historical Society 1904-06 (OHS Annual Reports, archive.orgreportsofann191100ontauoft); his papers are the George Robson Pattullo fonds, BC Archives MS-1188. [D/C] - Thomas Robson Pattullo (1837-1879): granduncle. Cariboo gold-rush miner at Barkerville, part-owner of the Two Brothers Co.; took $10,000 in gold to the 1876 Centennial Exhibition; the subject of a BC Archives memorial album of Frederick Dally photographs (Bourdon 2015). His obituary in the British Colonist of 9 Jan 1879 names "two brothers residing in Woodstock, G.R. and A. Pattullo" [D, quoted by Bourdon].
- Andrew Jeffrey (17 Feb 1800, Foulden, Berwickshire - 27 Jul 1863, Cobourg): Dick's
great-granduncle, brother of Mary (Jeffrey) Short. Mayor of Cobourg 1852, councillor 1851,
Board of Police 1837, elder of the Presbyterian church 1827, hardware merchant and founder
(Cobourg and District Historical Society, https://cdhs.ca/mayors-of-cobourg/; Trent University
Archives, "A. Jeffrey & Son", https://bataarch.trentu.ca/index.php/a-jeffrey-son) [D/C].
- He is listed in 1851 as "Jeffrey, A., merchant (hardware), Cobourg", next to John Short, postmaster, Newcastle (Smith 1851) [D].
- The sibling link is probable [C]: WikiTree
Jeffrey-573, citing Skinner, says he witnessed Mary's marriage at St Andrew's Presbyterian, Cobourg, as her brother. - Category: public (minor) or close.
Notable-ancestor material: Short and Pattullo
- John Short (1808-1858), Dick's great-grandfather: first postmaster of Newcastle,
C.W., 1845 (accessgenealogy summary of the 1851 Canada directory; listed as "Short, John,
postmaster, Newcastle" in Smith, Canada: Past, Present and Future, 1851) [D]. A small item;
suits
more-ancestors.yaml(group "found" or "later"). - Alexander Pattullo and Jean Watson, Dick's great-great-grandparents: Scottish emigrants of 1820 and early farmers in Caledon, Peel County (Bourdon) [C]. Minor.
- The Short family of Woodstock had nothing else notable that this search found. John Gerald's siblings were Jane (1836-1909), Richard (1840-1904), Joseph William (1842-1924, High River, Alberta), Mary Blair (1844-1928) and Isabella (Mrs. Hay, 1848-1924) (WikiTree) [C].
2. Elliott, Adams and Deyoe (Saratoga County, New York)
Pedigree findings
Jennie (Sibelia J.) Elliott (1857-1929), Jennie L. Elliott
- New: her death. 23 Sep 1929, Evanston: Illinois Deaths and Stillbirths, "Jennie S.
Ellingwood" (FamilySearch N3PZ-RG2; cited on WikiTree
Elliott-24462) [D index]. This fills the page's open question. The master research file already gives "1857-1929". - New: the name "Sibelia" is in a record. The Cook County marriage index entry is "Finley
Ellingwood and Sibelia J. Elliott, 01 Sep 1880" (FamilySearch N76S-DNT, as cited on
WikiTree) [D index].
- The archive's master research says "no record found uses 'Sibelia'". The archive's source page for this index (Cook County, Illinois, Marriages Index, 1871-1920: Finley Ellingwood and Jennie Elliott) has her as "Jennie", as the Ancestry tree carries it.
- If the FamilySearch transcription is right, her given names were Sibelia Jane, and "Jennie" comes from Jane. Her granddaughter Mary Jane was "named for her two grandmothers" (memoir): Mary (Pattullo) Short and Sibelia Jane (Elliott) Ellingwood.
- Check the image.
- Birth: 25 Oct 1857, Wilton, Saratoga County (WikiTree). This favours reading the memoir's handwritten day as 25. Her parents in the 1860 census: "Charles F Elliot and Susan M Elliot" (FamilySearch MC4J-HHB, cited on WikiTree) [D index].
- Siblings: George Leonard Elliott (1861-1928), Laura Elizabeth (Mrs. Haskins, 1866-1914), Harriet E. (Mrs. Zaneis, 1871-1937) (WikiTree) [C].
Charles Franklin Elliott (13 Mar 1829 - 27 Apr 1896), Charles Franklin Elliott
- Born at East Canaan, Litchfield County, Connecticut (WikiTree
Elliott-24461). This resolves the tree's "New Cannon, Litchfield". - Died at Chicago, 27 Apr 1896: Cook County Deaths, cn 4713 (FamilySearch N7N4-M3Y) [D index].
- His parents are unknown; nothing found.
Susan Maria Adams (16 Jun 1837 - 21 Apr 1926, Evanston), Susan Marriah Adams
- The Illinois death index has "Susan M. Elliott ... [father] Lars Adams", a probable mis-indexing of Lewis (FamilySearch N3FF-F3D) [D index].
- In her parents' household in the 1850 census, Wilton (FamilySearch MC1N-2JN) [D index].
- Hasbrouck and Heidgerd list her as "b. SUSAN M. ADAMS", a child of Jane Maria Deyoe and Lewis M. Adams (p. 101) [C].
- Rating: Susan → Lewis M. Adams and Jane M. Deyoe, probable, up from the archive's "possible".
- Conflict: birthplace. WikiTree has Wilton; the tree has Saratoga Springs.
Lewis M. Adams (1 May 1812 - 28 Jun 1904, Wilton), Lewis M. Adams
- Married Jane Maria Deyoe on 14 Nov 1833, per the Saratoga Sentinel, cited by Hasbrouck and Heidgerd, p. 101 [C, citing a newspaper].
- In Wilton in the 1850, 1855, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1875 and 1880 censuses; in Saratoga Springs in
1900 (WikiTree
Adams-45346). Buried at Loudon (Louden) Cemetery, Wilton. - Children, per Hasbrouck and WikiTree: Elizabeth (1834-35), an infant (1836), Susan M. (1837), Leonard L. (1841-76), Laura Mathilda (b. 22 Jul 1843; m. 18 Nov 1862 Silas G. Allen), and Harriet M. (Mrs. Estabrook, b. 1852).
- His parents are unknown.
Jane Maria Deyoe (b. 4 Jul 1808/1809, Pittstown; d. 8 Dec 1892, Wilton), Jane Maria Deyoe
- Conflict: the birth year.
- Hasbrouck and Heidgerd p. 101: "G-160 JANE MARIA, b. 7-4-1809" [C].
- WikiTree
Deyoe-44: "Censuses indicate that she was born in 1808, not 1803". - Her gravestone (Find a Grave 70659162) has 1803, which is probably the source of the tree's date.
- 1808 or 1809 fits her parents, who were 20 and 21; the archive's note on the age problem is right that 1803 does not fit.
- Birthplace: Pittstown, Rensselaer County, where the family lived until about 1832, not Saratoga Springs.
- Error in Hasbrouck: it gives her death as 11-14-1843. That cannot be right: she bore Harriet in 1852 and appears in the 1850-1865 censuses. It looks like a slip for the marriage date (11-14-1833).
- Father Peter J. Deyoe, mother Elizabeth Esmond: probable [C]. She is "G-160" under "F-86 PETER J. m. Elizabeth Esmond", lineage "James-Peter-Jacobus-Christian" (Hasbrouck and Heidgerd, p. 101). The naming fits: her brother was "A. I. Esmond Deyoe" (b. 1817/18). Settle with Peter J.'s 1857 Saratoga probate.
Peter J. Deyoe (b. 2 Nov 1787, Pittstown; d. 7 Apr 1857, Wilton)
- Hasbrouck p. 54: "F-86 PETER J., b. 11-2-1787, d. 4-7-1857 @ 69-5-5 (Loudon Ch. Cem.)". The
tree has 1786 and Schaghticoke; WikiTree
Deyoe-64has 1788. He moved from Pittstown to Wilton about 1832; censuses: 1810 and 1820 Pittstown, 1830 Pittstown, 1840 Wilton (WikiTree) [D indexes]. - Father James Deyoe: probable to proven. James's will, proved 2 Jun 1841 (Saratoga
Surrogate), "names widow Maria of Stillwater; children: Peter J. of Wilton, Mynard of
Stillwater, Thomas of Malta, Hannah wife of Peter D. Esmond ...". Abstract in Hasbrouck and
Heidgerd, p. 27 [D, abstracted]; the heirs-at-law list is on WikiTree
Deyoe-63, linking an Ancestry probate image. - Wife Elizabeth Esmond, b. 15 Apr 1788, d. 21 Jul 1841 @ 53-3-6 (Hasbrouck p. 54, from the
gravestone). This matches the tree's 15 Apr 1788. WikiTree's 1782 is from Find a Grave.
- Her parents are unresolved. Hasbrouck calls her "dau. of Deyoe Esmond & Hannah", which is impossible: Hannah Deyoe, wife of Peter D. Esmond, was born in 1790, and "Deyoe Esmond" was a farmer at Tomhannock in 1870. The tree's Joseph Esmond and Catherine Deyo fit a real couple: Peter Deyo's 1812 will names "Catherine wife of Joseph Ismond" (Hasbrouck p. 13).
- If the tree is right, Peter J. Deyoe and Elizabeth Esmond were first cousins, and Jane descends twice from Peter Deyo and Charity Cramer. Possible. It needs Schaghticoke or Pittstown baptisms, or Joseph Esmond's estate (d. 1813).
James Deyoe (b. 5 Aug 1764; d. 4 Apr 1841, aged 77; buried Hart Cemetery, Stillwater)
- Married Maria Cole on 3 Mar 1788 (b. 1760, d. 18 Sep 1848); Hasbrouck p. 27. WikiTree
Cole-32637has her as Catherine Maria Cole (Koel) of Tarrytown and gives her Palatine and Philipsburg ancestry (Koel, See/Sy, Storm) [C]. In Pittstown in 1800 ("James Deo") [D index]. - Father Peter Deyo (bp. 1739): probable, with one conflict.
- For: Peter's will, dated 4 Apr 1812 and proved 23 Apr 1812 (given as Columbia Surrogate), names "wife 'Gertrude' and 9 children: James, John, Zachariah, Jacob, Peter, Jane widow of Thomas Ismond, Sarah wife of Roelof Rip, Polly wife of David Myer, Catherine wife of Joseph Ismond" (Hasbrouck p. 13, which lists James first, as b. 1764) [D, abstracted].
- Against: LeFevre's History of New Paltz (1909), Appendix pp. 158-59, quoting a descendant (Mrs. A. C. Hayden), lists the same children but calls Zachariah (b. 24 Sep 1774) "the oldest son". It dates Peter's marriage to Charity Maria Cramer to 1765, after James's 1764 birth.
- Neither is fatal: the marriage date may be approximate, and Mrs. Hayden descended from Zachariah. But it keeps the link at probable.

Answer to the brief's question. The Saratoga Deyoes do descend from the Huguenot Deyos of New Paltz: Jane Maria Deyoe is an 8th-generation descendant of Chrétien Deyo through his son Pierre. Rating: probable. The upper half (Peter, 1739, to Chrétien) is documented in Kingston and New Paltz church records and deeds. The lower three links (Jane ← Peter J. ← James ← Peter) rest on wills abstracted in the 1958 Deyo genealogy.
Famous kin: Deyo (all through the Hasbrouck and LeFevre intermarriages)
The family's side for each: Pierre Deyo → Christian Deyo (1681-aft. 1765) → Jacobus Deyo (1704-bef. 1754) → Peter Deyo (1739-1812) → James Deyoe (1764-1841) → Peter J. Deyoe (1787-1857) → Jane Maria Deyoe (Jane Maria Deyoe) → Susan Adams → Jennie Elliott → Cudge → Dick. Dick is the 10th generation below Pierre, and the 11th below Chrétien.
In the archive's terms: shared_name ("Pierre Deyo and Agathe Nickol", or "Chrétien Deyo and
Jeanne Verbeau"), start: jane-deyoe-1809, and before: [Christian Deyo (1681-aft. 1765),
Jacobus Deyo (1704-bef. 1754), Peter Deyo (1739-1812), James Deyoe (1764-1841), Peter J. Deyoe
(1787-1857)] (plus Pierre Deyo (c. 1648-c. 1700) above them when the shared ancestor is Chrétien).
Confidence for every entry below: at best possible to probable. It is capped by the probable Saratoga links above. The famous person's side comes from Wikipedia's "Hasbrouck family" article, which cites Ray Gurganus's ourfamtree.org [C]. The top two or three steps are also in Hasbrouck and Heidgerd [C]. Verify the lower steps before adding any of them.

Other New Paltz descendants on Wikipedia's "Hasbrouck family" list could be worked the same way: Josiah Hasbrouck, Lydia Sayer Hasbrouck, William C. Hasbrouck, Gen. George H. Sharpe, Abraham A. Deyo, and Darren O'Day (through Abraham Deyo Jr., so Pierre's line).
Notable-ancestor material: Deyo
- Chrétien (Christian) Deyo (c. 1620-1687), Dick's 9x great-grandfather. One of the twelve patentees of New Paltz (1677) and the first to die; all four of his children married patentees or were patentees. Group: first.
- Pierre Deyo (c. 1648-c. 1700) and Agathe Nickol, Dick's 8x great-grandparents. Pierre was a patentee of New Paltz, 1677; his son Pierre "went alone to search a direct route eastward to the Hudson River" and never returned (LeFevre). Group: first.

- Peter Deyo (1739-1812), Dick's 5x great-grandfather. "Member of 4th Dutchess Militia" (Hasbrouck p. 12). He is not in the DAR ancestor database records checked (A033380-A033397).
- Hatcher's Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots (vol. 1) indexes James, Peter, Peter and Peter Jr. Deyoe near Pittstown and Tomhannock. That may be James (1764) and Peter (1739) [lead; restricted on archive.org].
- Kin, not ancestors: Jacobus Deyo Sr. (bp. 1732), Peter's elder brother, is a DAR (A033387) and SAR (P-327933) patriot of the 8th Albany County Militia.

- Birth: Freeport, Cumberland County, 16 Jul 1794, father James Rice, mother Abigail. Maine Births and Christenings / Maine Church Records, FamilySearch QP7S-1H44 (cited on WikiTree) [D index]. Mary (Sylvester) Rice (b. 18 Jul 1801, Durham; d. 14 Apr 1861, Momence), mary-rice-1801
- Maiden name Sylvester: probable to proven (the 1819 marriage) [D index].
- Parents: probably Job Sylvester Jr. and Lydia Phillips of Durham [I, probable].
- Stackpole, History of Durham, Maine (1899), pp. 260-61: Job Sylvester Jr., b. 9 Nov 1767, m. 25 Nov 1790 in Hanover, Mass., Lydia Phillips (b. 12 Feb 1769). "They settled in Durham about 1800 ... About 1840 he and his wife went West to live with his son Benjamin. He died at Manchester, Ind., 19 Oct 1859 ... They had nine children" [C].
- Stackpole names only seven of the nine, and there is a gap between Benjamin (1799) and Patience (1808) where a Mary born in Durham in 1801 fits.
- His daughter Lydia m. 1811 Luther Plummer, "Settled in Manchester, Ind."; Rufus and Mary named a daughter Lucy Plummer Rice and lived at Manchester.
- The archive's note ("the Sylvesters were among the first settlers of Manchester in 1818") fits.

- Burial: Old Baptist Cemetery, Yarmouth (Find a Grave 96486294, per WikiTree). The tree has the death at Scarborough.
- Parents: Joseph Rice and Ruth Scott (WikiTree; the tree has Joseph Rice, c. 1720-1776, of Kittery). Unsourced on WikiTree [C], so possible.

Revolutionary private (DAR Lineage Book 84, archive.org
lineagebook0084matt), m. 1777 Dorcas Smith of Berwick; - George Warren (1750-1819, buried at Warren Cemetery, Pownal Center);
- Jeremiah Warren (1771-1835, Scarborough).
- William Cotton Warren (b. 13 Jul 1752, Scarborough; d. 1824, Moultonborough, N.H.), a
Revolutionary private (DAR Lineage Book 84, archive.org
- Abigail named a daughter Mary Cotton Rice (1788), and George Warren lived at Pownal, where her son Rufus settled. This hints, and only hints [I], that she was a sister of William Cotton and George Warren. The parents of those two are not given on WikiTree either.
- Connection to the archive's Richard Warren of the Mayflower (Richard Warren): none found. Nothing ties the Scarborough Warrens to Plymouth Colony; Maine Warrens of the period include the Berwick family of James Warren, a Scot. Treat as not connected (disproven as an assumption, unproven as a fact) until her parents are known.

Notable-ancestor material: Rice and Sylvester
- Job Sylvester (1742-1832), Dick's 4x great-grandfather if Mary Sylvester's parentage
holds. Revolutionary soldier. DAR Lineage Book vol. 59, no. 58126 (descent through his
son Benjamin): "Job Sylvester (1742-1832) was placed on the pension roll, 1818, for service as
private, 1775-76, in Captain Reed's company, Colonel Bailey's Massachusetts regiment. He was
born in Hanover, Mass.; died in Durham, Me." [D, compiled by DAR from the pension file].
archive.org
lineagebook59daug. Stackpole p. 260 also calls him a "Revolutionary soldier". He married Margaret Stetson in Hanover on 8 Jun 1765. Group: mil. Probable, given the Sylvester link. - The Sylvester line further up (Stackpole p. 259) [C]: Richard Sylvester, who came about 1630 and settled at Weymouth (m. 1632 Naomi Torrey) → Joseph (b. 1638) → Amos (b. 1685, m. 1706 Elizabeth Henchman) → Amos Jr. (b. 1707, m. 1732 Patience Palmer) → Job (b. 1742). The Stetson, Phillips and Torrey wives are Plymouth County families. A Mayflower descent through them is plausible but not looked for and not assumed; this is the only branch here that could meet the archive's Plymouth families.
- James Rice (b. 1764): no Revolutionary service found in the time available. Check Mass. Soldiers and Sailors under "Rice, James" of Scarborough.

Checked and ruled out (or not established)
- Jacobus Deyo Sr. and Jr. of Ghent, Columbia County (the SAR patriots P-327933 and P-327934; DAR A033387 and A033388). Their "James Jacobus Jr." (c. 1754-1822, Ghent) is not James Deyoe of Pittstown and Stillwater (1764-1841). Jacobus Sr. (bp. 1732) is kin, the elder brother of Peter (1739), but not in Dick's direct line.
- The Deyo/Deo/Dion family of Quebec and northern New York (many-roads.com): a French-Canadian Catholic family, unrelated to New Paltz.
- Rapalje, Bergen and Catalina Trico through the Hooglands: not established. WikiTree makes
Jannetje Freer's maternal grandmother Annetie Hoogland, granddaughter of Sarah Rapalje and Hans
Hansen Bergen. But the 1686 Kingston baptism of Annetie van Weyen, quoted on WikiTree
Van_Wayen-1, names her mother Annetie Gerritz, which conflicts with a Hoogland (patronymic Dircks). Do not use. - The Lewis and David Pattullo family of Spokane (Northwest Biography, 1943): no link to Halkett's family found. A namesake, so not a connection.
- Rufus Rice (1793, Marlborough - 1851, Worcester, Mass.; WikiTree
Rice-19004): a different man. - Abigail C. Warren (1764, Berwick - 1850, Buckfield; m. Ricker): a different woman.
- Joseph Warren, son of Dr. John and Abigail (Collins) Warren, "removed to Maine" (Genealogy of Warren, 1854): too late to be Abigail's father, and of the Boston family.
- Richard Warren of the Mayflower as Abigail Warren's ancestor: no evidence. Do not link.
- Dictionary of Canadian Biography entries for T. D., George Robson or Andrew Pattullo: none online. The DCB full-text search returns only mentions in other biographies.
- Andrew Jeffrey in the DCB: none found.
- "Halkett Pattullo" in the Illinois Masonic proceedings of 1909 and 1916: this is Halkett A. Pattullo (1867-1936, Hinsdale, Ill.), son of Mary's brother Alexander, so a first cousin of Ruth. Kin, but not notable.

# Ellingwood line: the wives' families (Pattullo and Short, Adams and Deyoe, Rice and Sylvester)Research report for the connections of Richard Everett "Dick" Ellingwood Jr. (1929-2019,`richard-ellingwood-1929`). Read-only research; nothing in the archive was edited.Evidence labels: [D] documented (a record, or a published transcript, abstract or index of one),[C] compiled (a genealogy, a family tree, Wikipedia), [I] inferred, [T] tradition.Ratings: proven / probable / possible / disproven.**A correction to the brief, first.** In the archive, Ruth Short is Dick's **mother**(`richard-ellingwood-1929`: mother `ruth-short-d1974`), not his grandmother. Each generation inthe brief is therefore one or two too high:| Person | Brief says | Actual place in Dick's family ||---|---|---|| Ruth Short (1893-1974) | grandmother | mother || Mary Pattullo (1852-1932) | — | grandmother || Jennie Elliott (1857-1929) | great-grandmother | grandmother (Cudge's mother) || Susan Adams (1837-1926) | — | great-grandmother || Jane Deyoe (1808/9-1892) | — | 2x great-grandmother || Mary Abigail Rice (1822-1874) | 3x great-grandmother | great-grandmother (Finley's mother) || Rufus Rice (1794-1840) | — | 2x great-grandfather || James Rice and Abigail Warren | — | 3x great-grandparents |All relationships below are worked out from Dick.---## Summary1. **Pattullo: settled.** Mary (Pattullo) Short was the youngest child of Halkett Pattullo andJane Robson, and so a full **sister of George Robson Pattullo**, father of Premier DuffPattullo. Ruth Short and Duff Pattullo were first cousins, exactly as Cudge's memoir has it("Ruth's cousin, Duff Pattullo", memoir p. G37). Two records name Mary's father as HalkettPattullo (her 1879 marriage and her 1932 death certificate), and a published study of herbrother Thomas (Bourdon, *BC Studies* 185, 2015) names her as the youngest of the family.Famous kin from this: **Duff Pattullo** (Premier of BC), **George Pattullo** (writer, Duff'sbrother), and Ruth's uncle **Andrew Pattullo** (Ontario MPP, editor of the WoodstockSentinel-Review). All are **proven** on the Pattullo side.2. **Deyoe: probably the New Paltz Huguenots.** The Saratoga Deyoes do descend from the NewPaltz family, per Hasbrouck and Heidgerd, *The Deyo (Deyoe) Family* (1958). The line runsJane Maria Deyoe ← Peter J. Deyoe of Wilton ← James Deyoe of Pittstown and Stillwater ←Peter Deyo (bp. Kingston 1739, d. Pittstown 1812) ← Jacobus ← Christian ← **Pierre Deyo** ←**Chrétien Deyo**; Pierre and Chrétien were both patentees of New Paltz. The New Paltz end isdocumented in church records. The three Saratoga links rest on will abstracts in a compiledgenealogy, and one of them (James to Peter) has a conflict, so the line is **probable**.That gives possible famous kin through the Hasbroucks: Capt. Washington Irving Chambers,Ezra H. Fitch of Abercrombie & Fitch, Rep. Jay LeFevre, Abraham Bruyn Hasbrouck, Laurence H.Snyder, and Fred and Kate Upton. All are rated **possible**.3. **Rice: a mistake corrected and a new line found.** Rufus Rice did **not** die in WhitesideCounty, Illinois. In 1840 he was at Manchester, Dearborn County, Indiana, and he is buried atOld Hogan Hill Cemetery there. That fits his 1846 Dearborn estate and settles the archive's openquestion. A Maine record of his birth (Freeport, 16 Jul 1794) names his parents James Rice andAbigail. His wife was **Mary Sylvester**: they married at Durham, Maine, on 10 Oct 1819. Shewas probably a daughter of Job Sylvester Jr. and Lydia Phillips, who settled at Manchester,Indiana [I]. Job Jr.'s father, **Job Sylvester (1742-1832)**, was a Revolutionary soldier withan 1818 pension (DAR Lineage Book 59). **Abigail Warren** of Scarborough has no known parents, and nothing links her to Richard Warren of the Mayflower.---## 1. Pattullo and Short (Ontario)### Pedigree findings**Ruth Ethelwyn Short** (13 Jan 1893, Woodstock - 13 Feb 1974, Spokane), `ruth-short-d1974`- Parents John Gerald Short and Mary Pattullo: the archive rates this **probable**. It is nowbacked by a set of siblings that matches the memoir's. WikiTree `Short-3745` and `Pattullo-22`list John and Mary's children as **Jeffrey Robson** (b. 18 Aug 1880; Cudge's partner "Jeff"),**Mary Isabella** (b. 1 Oct 1881; the piano teacher), **Jeanne Beatrice** (b. 22 May 1884,d. Jan 1969, Spokane; "Bea", d. Feb 1969 in the memoir), **Arthur Wendell** (1 Apr 1886 -26 Aug 1887; "a brother who died young"), and **Ruth Ethelwyn** (b. 13 Jan 1893) [C].- The names fit as well [I]. "Jeffrey Robson" joins the two grandmothers' surnames: Mary**Jeffrey** (John Short's mother) and Jane **Robson** (Mary Pattullo's mother). Ruth's middlename echoes her cousin **Ethelwyn** Pattullo (b. 1868), Duff's eldest sister.- To settle it: Ruth's 1893 Ontario birth registration (Oxford County), on FamilySearch orAncestry.**John Gerald Short** (22 Dec 1845 - 20 Oct 1916, Spokane), `john-short-1845`- Parents **John Short** (8 Aug 1808 - 4 Oct 1858, Orono) and **Mary Jeffrey** (8 Jan 1809,Berwick-upon-Tweed - 15 Nov 1883, Woodstock), per WikiTree `Short-3592` and `Jeffrey-573` [C].Those profiles cite Ward Skinner's compiled *Descendants of William Jeffrey* and the1861 and 1881 censuses.- **Conflict: the birthplace.** The archive and the tree have Woodstock. But his father waspostmaster at **Newcastle, Clarke Township, Durham County, C.W.**, from 1845. W. H. Smith,*Canada: Past, Present and Future* (1851), lists "Short, John, postmaster ... Newcastle" in theDurham County directory [D] (archive.org `canadapastpresen01smit`). His siblings were born atNewcastle in 1842, 1844 and 1848, and the family moved to Woodstock only after 1858 (WikiTree, citing Skinner). John Gerald was most likely born at **Newcastle**, not Woodstock [I].The 1861 census (Cobourg) and the 1891 census (Woodstock) would settle it.- 1891 census, Woodstock: John, Mary and the three eldest children; he is an "organs"manufacturer (WikiTree summary of the census) [C]. This agrees with "organ manufacturer" in`Ellingwood_Master_Research.md`.- **New record:** the *British Columbia Gazette*, Nov-Dec 1910 and Apr 1911. "John G. Short, labourer [later 'book-keeper'], of Spokane, Wash." and "Mary Short, wife of John G. Short, ofSpokane" each gave notice of intent to apply to purchase land in the District of Yale [D].archive.org `governmentgazett50nogove_o8y6` (17 Nov 1910), `governmentgazett51nogove_h9e9`(6 Apr 1911).- Married **5 Nov 1879, Woodstock**: John G. "Pattullo was the second ofnine children born to Jane (Robson) Pattullo (1809-79) and Halkett Pattullo (1810-65)... In1855, the family moved to Blenheim Township, Oxford County... Three sisters are referenced aswell. Mary (b. 1852), the youngest, seems to have been a favourite." Thomas's 1876 will left"siblings Andrew and Mary two thousand dollars each" (p. 71, citing BC Archives GR-1052, will#5704). His photograph with "sister Mary" is at the Woodstock Museum (1988.21.04) [C, citingrecords]. PDF: https://ojs.library.ubc.ca/index.php/bcstudies/article/download/186059/185452- **Mother: Jane Robson** (b. c. 1809, Eckford, Roxburghshire; d. 4 Apr 1879, Oxford County),WikiTree `Robson-1781` [C], and Bourdon [C].- **Conflict: her birth date.** The tree and the archive have 17 Sep 1852; WikiTree has**17 Jul 1852** (source not stated). Caledon fits either way: the family was there until1855, and her brother Andrew was born at Caledon in 1850.- 1910: WikiTree says she was with her children in Chicago (1910 US census, "Mary P. Short"),but the BC Gazette puts her at Spokane in 1910-11. She probably spent time in both [C/D].**Halkett Pattullo** (bapt. 1809, Midlothian; d. 7 Jun 1865, Oxford County), WikiTree `Pattullo-42`- Scottish baptism, "Hacket Patullo, 1809" (FamilySearch XTRL-49B) [D index]. Buried at Christian Cemetery,Princeton, Oxford County (Find a Grave 195354125).- **Conflict:** Wikipedia's Duff Pattullo article has him "1809-c. 1855". Bourdon and thegravestone have **1865**.- Children (WikiTree, with Bourdon): Alexander (1835-1880, Sanilac, Mich.), **Thomas Robson**(1837-1879, Barkerville), Jane (Mrs. Rennie, b. 1839), [William, b. 1841, in Bourdon only],Margaret (Mrs. A. Bourdon says "nine children" and includes William; WikiTree omitsWilliam. Both include George and Mary.- His parents, **Alexander Pattullo** (c. 1773, Dundee - 8 Dec 1828, Caledon) and **Jean Watson**(b. 3 May 1771, Prestonpans - d. 8 Aug 1852, Caledon), "emigrated from Scotland in 1820 andfarmed forty hectares in Caledon, Peel County" (Bourdon p. 54; WikiTree `Pattullo-87`) [C].**Mary Pattullo's place in the family: a full sister of George Robson Pattullo.** George'sOntario death registration (Woodstock, 23 Apr 1922) names his father as "Halbert [Halkett]Pattullo" (FamilySearch J6PP-DJX) [D]. His 1868 marriage to Mary Ann Rounds names "HalketPatulls" (FamilySearch Q2YM-SXL4) [D]. Bourdon names both as children of Halkett and Jane(Robson) [C]. **Rating: proven.** Duff Pattullo was therefore Ruth Short's **first cousin**, and**Dick's first cousin once removed.**### Famous kin: PattulloShared ancestors for each: **Halkett Pattullo (1809-1865) and Jane Robson (c. 1809-1879)**, whoare not in the archive. That cannot be right: she boreHarriet in 1852 and appears in the 1850-1865 censuses. It looks like a slip for the marriagedate (11-14-1833).- **Father Peter J. This matches the tree's 15 Apr 1788. WikiTree's 1782 is from Find a Grave.- **Her parents are unresolved.** Hasbrouck calls her "dau. of Deyoe Esmond & Hannah", which isimpossible: Hannah Deyoe, wife of Peter D. Esmond, was born in 1790, and "Deyoe Esmond" wasa farmer at Tomhannock in 1870. The tree's **Joseph Esmond and Catherine Deyo** fit a realcouple: Peter Deyo's 1812 will names "Catherine wife of Joseph Ismond" (Hasbrouck p. 13).- If the tree is right, Peter J. Deyoe and Elizabeth Esmond were first cousins, and Janedescends twice from Peter Deyo and Charity Cramer. **Possible.** It needs Schaghticoke orPittstown baptisms, or Joseph Esmond's estate (d. 1813).**James Deyoe** (b. 5 Aug 1764; d. 4 Apr 1841, aged 77; buried Hart Cemetery, Stillwater)- Married **Maria Cole** on 3 Mar 1788 (b. 1760, d. 18 Sep 1848); Hasbrouck p. 27. C. Hayden), lists the same children but calls **Zachariah (b. 24 Sep 1774) "theoldest son"**. It dates Peter's marriage to Charity Maria Cramer to 1765, after James's 1764birth.- Neither is fatal: the marriage date may be approximate, and Mrs. Hayden descended fromZachariah.
