The date from his death certificate (his daughter Beatrice the informant), as the Ancestry tree has it. But he was 31 at his marriage in November 1879 and the 1900 census has "Dec 1847," aged 52; those two agree on 1847. The place from his marriage registration ("Newcastle, Ont."), where his father was postmaster; the Ancestry tree's Woodstock is where he lived later.

His marriage registration (Woodstock, 1879) names his parents John Short and Mary Jeffrey; so does his death certificate (Spokane, 1916), with their birthplaces, England and Scotland. The 1900 census also has his father born in England and his mother in Scotland.

Notes
Father of Ruth Ethelwyn (Short) Ellingwood. He was born at Newcastle, in Clarke Township, Durham County, where his father John Short was the first postmaster, to John Short and Mary Jeffrey; his father died in 1858 and the family moved to Cobourg and then Woodstock. At Woodstock he was a merchant at his marriage in 1879, a hardware merchant through the 1880s, like his uncle Andrew Jeffrey of Cobourg, and by 1891 a manufacturer of organs. His elder brother Joseph William was in the hardware business at Woodstock from 1870 until he went west to High River in 1883 (source); the brothers very probably worked together, John carrying on after Joseph left [I]. His brothers and sisters were Jane, Richard, Joseph William, Mary Blair and Isabella (Mrs. James Hay); see his father’s page.
He married Mary Pattullo, sister of the Woodstock newspapermen George and Andrew Pattullo, at Woodstock on 5 November 1879 (record). Their children, all born at Woodstock: Jeffrey Robson (18 Aug 1880; Cudge’s partner “Jeff”), Mary Isabella (Oct 1881; the piano teacher), Jeannie Beatrice (22 May 1884; “Bea”), Arthur Wendell (1886-1887) and Ruth Ethelwyn (13 Jan 1893). In 1900 Mary had borne five children, four living.
He went to the United States in 1896, and his wife and children followed in 1897: in June 1900 they were renting in Hyde Park, Chicago, where he was secretary of a manufacturing company [?] and Jeff an assistant salesman (record). By November 1910 he was at Spokane: “John G. Short, labourer [later ‘book-keeper’], of Spokane, Wash.” and “Mary Short, wife of John G. Short, of Spokane” each gave notice of intent to buy land in the District of Yale, British Columbia (record). He died at his home, E 715 25th Avenue, Spokane, on 20 October 1916, after months of senile dementia; his daughter Beatrice gave the particulars (record). The Ancestry tree calls him “John Gerald Short II”; no record seen gives his father a middle name.
Open questions
- His birth year: 1845 (his death certificate and his grave marker, both very probably from his daughter Beatrice) or 1847 (his age at marriage and the 1900 census). The 1851 and 1861 censuses (Newcastle; Cobourg) would show it.
- The 1891 census entry itself, and when the family left Chicago for Spokane.
