The Great Swamp Fight monument, South Kingstown, Rhode Island
About it
A tall rough granite shaft on a low rise in the woods, with smaller stones set round it, at the end of a half-mile path off Great Swamp Monument Road. The Rhode Island Society of Colonial Wars placed it in 1906 on what is taken to be the site of the Narragansetts’ palisaded fort, on an island of upland in the swamp. On Sunday 19 December 1675 the armies of Massachusetts, Plymouth and Connecticut, about a thousand men, marched through the snow, stormed the fort and burned it with the wigwams inside, and hundreds of Narragansett men, women and children died; the English lost some seventy killed and many more wounded. Ralph Ellinwood of Beverly, eighteen, was in Capt. Joseph Gardner’s company of Salem with his brother John; Gardner was killed in the assault.
