Family

Father
Ralph Ellinwood 1694–1728

Three records agree: the Beverly register's family of Ralph and Sarah Ellingwood; the 1743 division of Ralph III's estate, giving Israel the eldest son's two shares; and Ralph II's will of 1741, naming "my Two Grandsons Israel Elinwood & Ralph Elinwood", children of "my Son Ralph Elinwood Decd". The 1714 baptism enters the father as "Ralph j[r]".

Notes

Born at Beverly on 29 September 1714 and baptized 3 October, his father entered as “Ralph j[r]” (record; the page is in the Gallery). He was fourteen when his father was lost at sea, and his mother remarried the next year. By 1743 he was “Israel Ellingwood of Boston, coaster”, taking his double share of his father’s estate and acting as guardian of his brother Daniel (record); in every later record he is a mariner, and on his gravestone “Capt.”

He married Susanna Rand at Boston in March 1741/2 (record) and in 1745 bought half a house at the North End, on Cross Street (record). Their children were baptized at First Church (record). After Susanna’s death he married Hannah Perkins (1752), and in 1753 he became guardian of his children for what came to them from their grandfather Robert Rand (record).

He died at Boston on 14 March 1785 and was buried in the Granary (record). His will left his estate to “my beloved Children Richard Susanna Ralph & Sarah”; it included two tenements near the head of Cross Street and, at Beverly, half of a house “on the south side of the way that leads from the Ferry to Ellingwoods point”, still in the family 111 years after Ralph I’s death. His son-in-law Robert Hitchborne was executor (record).
