Robert Rand

Also Robert Rand the joiner

Joiner of Boston, born at Lynn in 1686, probably the son of Robert Rand Jr. and Tabitha Ivory. He married Susanna Cheever, daughter of Richard Cheever the cordwainer, in 1709/10, and they had eight children. His wife died in 1748 and he in 1752, and he was buried in the Granary. Father of Susanna (Rand) Ellingwood, whose children his estate provided for.

Life

  1. 1686
    Born
    6 Oct 1686, Lynn, Massachusetts

"Robert, s. Roberd, jr. and Tabitha, Oct. 6, 1686." The Ancestry tree's "18 Jun 1684, Charlestown" is the birth of another Robert Rand, a sailmaker, son of Thomas Rand of Charlestown, who married Elizabeth Welch in 1709: disproven for this man.

  2. 1709
    Married Susanna Cheever
    26 Jan 1709/10, Boston, Massachusetts

By Rev. Benjamin Wadsworth (Boston Marriages 1700-1751, p. 25). On the same page, by Rev. Thomas Bridge, 12 May 1709, "Robert Rand & Eliza. Welch": the sailmaker.

  3. 1752
    Died
    11 Feb 1752, Boston, Massachusetts

Gravestone in the Granary Burying Ground, as the Rand genealogy gives it; the tree's "Charlestown" belongs to the sailmaker.

Family

Father
Robert Rand c. 1653–1717

The Lynn birth names Robert Jr. and Tabitha; that the Boston joiner is that child is the Rand genealogy's (no. 22, "son of Robert (7)"). In 1733 the Narragansett grantees list has, for a Lynn soldier of 1675 named Rand, the claimant "Robert Rand, son." Robert Jr.'s probate (Essex, 1717/18) would settle it.

Notes

Father of Susanna (Rand) Ellingwood. Born at Lynn, the eldest surviving son of Robert Rand Jr. and Tabitha Ivory, he went to Boston and became a joiner. He married Susanna, daughter of Richard Cheever the cordwainer, in January 1709/10, and they had eight children: Mary (1710, m. Robert Mansfield), Richard (1712, died young), Richard (1713-1736, Harvard 1734, whose stone is also in the Granary), Susanna (12 Feb 1715/16), Robert (1719), Bartholomew (1723), Zechariah (1725-1757, a sugar-boiler) and Abigail (1728) (source). His wife died in 1748 and he on 11 Feb 1752, and was buried in the Granary.

His estate provided for his Ellingwood grandchildren: in 1753 a guardianship for one of Israel Ellingwood’s children was granted “in right of his Grandfather Robert Rand late of Boston Joyner” (record).

Two Robert Rands married in Boston in 1709, and the trees have merged them. The other, a sailmaker born at Charlestown on 18 June 1684, son of Thomas Rand and Sarah Longley, married Elizabeth Welch; his birth and his wife’s name have been carried onto this Robert and his grandmother.
