The line

The ancestry of Phebe (Stephens) Ellis (c. 1750 - probably 1789), wife of George Ellis and mother of Nancy (Ellis) Holbrook. Through her mother, Phebe Harlow, she descends twice from Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren, who came on the Anne in 1623, and so from Richard Warren of the Mayflower and his wife Elizabeth Walker of Baldock and Great Amwell, Hertfordshire: once through Rebecca (Bartlett) Harlow and once through her sister Sarah (Bartlett) Rider. Through her father, Edward Stephens Jr., she descends from Eleazer Churchill, son of John Churchill and Hannah Pontus.

The scope walks every ancestor of Phebe Stephens. Her husband’s side is in the Freeman and Ellis line; the two lines meet at John Churchill and Hannah Pontus, which made George and Phebe third cousins.

The line at a glance

Through Rebecca Bartlett: Richard Warren (d. 1628) = Elizabeth Walker (1583-1673) > Mary Warren (c. 1610-1683) = Robert Bartlett (d. 1676) > Rebecca Bartlett = Sgt. William Harlow (c. 1624/5-1691)

Samuel Harlow (1652/3- by 1728) = Hannah > William Harlow (1692-1751) = Mercy Rider > Phebe Harlow (b. 1728) = Edward Stephens Jr. (1721-1788) > Phebe Stephens = George Ellis > Nancy Ellis (1781-1864) > Capt. Richard Blackmer Holbrook Sr. (1821-1894)

Through Sarah Bartlett: Mary Warren = Robert Bartlett > Sarah Bartlett = Samuel Rider Jr. (c. 1630-1715) > John Rider (c. 1664-1735) = Hannah (Barnes?) > Mercy Rider (1696-1772) = William Harlow, above.

Through the Churchills: John Churchill (d. 1662/3) = Hannah Pontus > Eleazer Churchill (b. 1652) = Mary (Bryant?) > Mary Churchill (c. 1688-1723/4) = Edward Stephens (c. 1680-1756) > Edward Stephens Jr., above.

Counting Richard Warren as generation 1, Richard B. Holbrook Sr. is generation 9 and Frances Fairchild Holbrook generation 12.

  • Rebecca and Sarah Bartlett as daughters of Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren (probable): standard in the Warren genealogies; the research cites no record naming their parents. Every link below them is in the Plymouth records. Mayflower Families Through Five Generations, vol. 18, has not been checked.
  • Elizabeth Walker as the Mayflower Elizabeth Warren (probable): Davies’s argument from Augustine Walker’s will (TAG 78, 2003), now the accepted identification.
  • Phebe Stephens’s parents (probable): Davis names her among Edward Stephens’s children; the records show her maiden name and that George Ellis bought and occupied Edward’s farm, but none names her father.
  • Mary Churchill’s father Eleazer (probable) and Eleazer’s wife as Mary Bryant (probable, Torrey with a question mark).

What Mollie’s typescript got wrong here

  • Richard Warren did not marry a “widow Elizabeth (Jewett),” and there is no de Warenne descent.
  • Mary Warren was born about 1610, not 1606.
  • Sarah Bartlett married Samuel Rider Jr., not his father.
  • Eleazer Churchill did not marry Mary Doty: there is no Doty or Clarke descent in this line.
  • “George Ellis’s Wife” died 24 Nov 1789, not 24 Dec; George Ellis was born 10 May 1747, not 21 Jan 1749.
  • Edward and Phebe Stephens did not live at Carver; their son Edward did.
  • The “Fitz Stephens” pedigree and the “became a Quaker” story about William Harlow have no evidence.

Open questions

  • Richard Warren’s birth and parents; Robert Bartlett’s origin (Puddletown, Dorset, is a proposal); Sgt. William Harlow’s origin.
  • The All Hallows, Northampton, registers for the Riders.
  • Who were Edward Stephens’s (b. c. 1680) parents? Edward Stephens of Marshfield (living 1665) is named in the research but not linked.
  • Hannah, wife of John Rider: was she a Barnes?
  • Phebe (Stephens) Ellis’s birth.
