Also Phebe Ellis · Mrs. Phebe Stephens of Plimpton

Of Plympton when she married George Ellis of Middleborough in 1773; named with him and their seven children in Plympton's warning-out of 1785, she probably died at Plymouth in 1789. Probably a daughter of Edward Stephens and Phebe Harlow; through them she descended twice from Richard Warren of the Mayflower and was a third cousin of her husband. Family

Father
Edward Stephens 1721–1788

No record names her father. Davis lists "Phebe, m. George Ellis" among Edward Stephens's children [C]; his estate sold its farm to George Ellis, who occupied it [D]; and her children's 1805 quitclaim shows her maiden name was Stephens [D].

Mother
Phebe Harlow b. 1728

Davis 2:252 gives Edward Stephens's wife as Phebe Harlow, married 1747. The quitclaimed land, near Seth Harlow's homestead with a right in Harlow's Cedar Swamp, fits a Harlow inheritance.

Notes

Of Plympton when she married George Ellis of Middleborough in 1773. The Plympton warning-out of 28 Mar 1785 names her as “his Wife Phebe,” with George and their seven children; the family had come into the town from Plymouth in May 1784 (record). In 1805 her children quitclaimed to their brother George land “decended to us from our Mother Phebe Ellis Decd who was formerly Phebe Stephens”: pasture near Seth Harlow’s homestead by the Training field, a right in Harlow’s Cedar Swamp, and woodland.

Through her mother she descends twice from Richard Warren of the Mayflower and from Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren of the Anne, by the Harlow and Rider lines; through her father, from John Churchill and Hannah Pontus. She and George were third cousins, both great-great-grandchildren of John Churchill and Hannah Pontus: she through Eleazer Churchill and his daughter Mary (Churchill) Stephens, he through Sgt. John Churchill Jr. and his daughter Elizabeth (Churchill) Ellis. There is no Doty descent in her line.

Open questions

  • Her birth date and place.
  • Ziba and Isaac Ellis, named in the 1805 quitclaim but not in the 1785 warning-out, were probably her younger children, born 1785-89. No record says so.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Phebe Stevens was the daughter of Edward Stevens and Phebe Harlow

Probable. No record names her parents. Davis (1899) lists "Phebe, m. George Ellis" among Edward Stephens's children; his estate sold its farm to George Ellis; and in 1805 her children quitclaimed land near Seth Harlow's homestead, with a right in Harlow's Cedar Swamp, "from our Mother Phebe Ellis Decd who was formerly Phebe Stephens".

  • Disproven
Phebe (Stephens) Ellis died 24 Dec 1789

Probably 24 Nov 1789, as Mollie's own p. 32 has it. The Plymouth church list of deaths reads "Nov ... 24th George Ellis's Wife" (CSM 22:417); the "24" under December belongs to the next entry. No other record of her death has been found.
