The Harlow Old Fort House, Plymouth, 1929
About it
The gambrel-roofed house on Sandwich Street, shingled and two storeys high, seen from the corner under a great tree. The sign on the tree reads “Built by William Harlow in 1677 of timber from the old fort,” and the photographer’s caption on the negative says the same. After King Philip’s War the town granted Sgt. William Harlow the timbers of the palisaded fort it had built on Fort Hill (Burial Hill) in 1675, and by Plymouth tradition he used them to frame this house; an architectural survey of 1996 dated the present building to 1700 or later. The Plymouth Antiquarian Society opened it to the public in 1921.
