  • Possible
The selectmen sued Samuel Rider and William Harlow Jr. over a whale

The dispute is real. When the town took it up, it chose others to act, "seing serjant harlow & Joseph Bartlet did somwhat decline the Thing" (Plymouth town records 1:200), which fits Harlow standing aside; John Rider deposed in the case. The writ itself, from the Plymouth Scrap Book, has not been checked, so the defendants' names rest on it.

  • Proven
The church records show Will Harlow murmuring at the preaching

Confirmed: Plymouth church records (CSM 22:254), 9 March 1683/4, the first day in the new meetinghouse: "Will'. Harlow did in such a manner expresse himselfe murmuring at the soe preaching". The record does not say which of the two grown William Harlows it was, the sergeant or his son William (b. 1657).
