Notes
Yeoman, “of much Amwell in the Com of Herts.” His daughters Dorothy (1573) and Elizabeth (1583) were baptised at Baldock, and the family was at Great Amwell by 1597. His will of 19 Apr 1613, signed by mark, names “my daughter Elizabeth Warren wife of Richard Warren” and her three children Mary, Ann and Sarah; Ann, wife of Thomas Holland, and her children; “my daughter Mary Johnson”; and Simon and Dorothy, children of “Symon Adams Citizen & drap[er] of London,” who had married his daughter Dorothy. It gives 10s to “Thomas Hassall Vicar of much Amwell … to preach one Sermond at my funerall,” 5s to the poor, and to his granddaughter Dorothy Adams “a Gymmoll-Ringe of gold wch was her mothers.” Davies notes the will carries “three marks made by Augustine Walker, all quite different” (TAG 78:85-86 and n. 28).
In 1603 the Great Amwell register recorded “Susan Addams, a maiden borne in Amwell dwellinge at London died heere at Augustine Wallkar’s,” and “Marye surnamed Fanchurch, a child of the hospitall in London, was buried from Augustine Wallkar’s of Amwell” (Doree, Amwell Parish Register, p. 80, via Davies).
His daughter Dorothy married (1) Edward Grave of Standon in 1595 and (2) Simon Adams in 1599. Simon Adams, his overseer, was baptised at Great Amwell in 1571, was free of the Drapers in 1596 (London Roll DREB53), and in his will (proved 1645, TNA PROB 11/193/383; will) left money to the poor of Much Amwell [compiled, WikiTree Addams-139].
His second wife Mary (Stringer) was not the mother of his daughters born in 1573 and 1583 (Davies). Her will, as “Mary Wallker of Much Amwell,” was proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury on 10 Jan 1614/15 (PCC 3 Rudd; TNA PROB 11/125/16; will). WikiTree rejects a link to an Augustine baptised at Southam, Warwickshire, in 1564, since this Augustine had a child in 1573.
Open questions
- His first wife, the mother of Elizabeth, is unknown.
- His birth and parents are unknown. The Chancery suit Franketon v Walker (TNA C 2/Eliz/F2/28) names an “Augustin Walker” as defendant and may show whether he is this man and where he came from.
