John Rider

Of Plymouth, born about 1664 to Samuel Rider Jr. and Sarah Bartlett. He gave a deposition in the drift-whale dispute of 1690/1, and with his wife Hannah, probably a Barnes, had five children recorded at Plymouth from 1694, among them Mercy (Rider) Harlow. He probably had a second wife, Mary, and probably died in 1735.

Notes

Of Plymouth, yeoman. His children by Hannah (Plymouth VR p. 84): Sarah (1694), Mercy (14 Nov 1696), Samuel (1698), John (1700), Ebenezer (1702). His father’s will (7 Apr 1714) says: “as To my sons John Samuel & Benjamin and my Daughter Mercy I have done Competently for them in my life time” (MD 11:182-187).

On 20 Mar 1690/1 “John Rider aged 26 yeares or there abouts” testified in court “that ye whale in Controversy Came on shoare agains a pastur fence belonging to James and Tho: Clarke” (Plymouth Colony Records, Scrap Book p. 61, printed in MD 11:186). This was the drift whale that the Plymouth selectmen had attached for the town.

In 1698/9 the town granted him “forty foot of land to Run up from his barns towards the highway … for his Convenience of building.” The surveyors bounded it on 28 Mar 1700, setting a stake “about 6 ffoott” from the southeast corner of his house (Plymouth Town Records 1:268 and following). He was chosen a Plymouth constable in March 1708/9 and served on juries and as a hog constable (Plymouth Town Records 2; record). In 1718, as “John Rider of … Plymouth …. Yeoman,” he sold John Barnes his share of a cedar swamp (Plym. Co. Deeds 14:83; MD 11:186-187). A sale of 1718 also describes land “which I Bought of my Father Saml Rider Deceased” (MD 11).
