Notes

Cooper, of Plymouth. He came from All Hallows parish, Northampton, as a child with his father (in New England by 1643), and lived with him at Yarmouth and Plymouth for about thirty years before 1662, when the colony gave him a certificate under seal to prove his identity in Northampton, England, presumably over an inheritance or property there. The original survives among uncalendared deeds in the public library at Northampton (NEHGR 79:316).

A deed of 20 Mar 1660/1 calls him “Samuell Ryder Junir of the Towne of Plymouth …. Cooper,” and in the town’s rating of trades on 5 Aug 1672 “Samuel Ryder being a Cooper his facultie” was valued at £30, against £40 for “Serjeant harlow,” also a cooper (MD 11:171; Plymouth Town Records 1:118).

In July 1660 he bought 25 acres at Manomet Ponds near Thomas Clarke’s farm from Samuel Eddy, tailor. Eight months later he sold the land, with “the house hee now liveth in,” to Robert Ransom, but in April 1661 Ransom released it back to him for £3 10s paid to Nathaniel Warren (MD 11:170-171). In 1669 James Clarke sold him the land inside his fence, bounded by “a Red oake tree Marked upon a hill before the said Ryders Dore” and by the road “that Goeth to the Eelriver from theire houses.” In 1673/4 the town found that the land he had bought from Eddy was legally “Comon” and granted it to him outright (MD 11:172; Plymouth Town Records 1:138; record).

His father’s will (1679) left him “five shillings.” The Plymouth church’s member lists of 1703 include “Sam^l Rider” and “Lidia Rider, The wife of Sam^l Rider,” and the church entered his death among its members as “Samuell Rider sen^r July 18” (1715) (CSM 22:193-194, 214). His own will (7 Apr 1714, proved 23 Sept 1715): “as To my sons John Samuel & Benjamin and my Daughter Mercy I have done Competently for them in my life time” (MD 11:182-187).

By Sarah Bartlett he had Samuel (b. 18 Nov 1657, who died young) and John (b. c. 1664). The Samuel, Benjamin and Mercy of his will have no dates in the research and no files.

Mollie Pfeiffer (typescript pp. 46-48) and Davis (2:216) make Sarah Bartlett’s husband the elder Samuel Rider of Yarmouth. It was this Samuel, his son: the 1662 certificate calls him “Samuell Ryder Junior,” and his father’s wife Anne outlived his father.

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie's chart has Sarah Bartlett marrying Samuel Rider in 1656 and settling at Yarmouth, with sons Samuel, born 1657, and John.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
The selectmen sued Samuel Rider and William Harlow Jr. over a whale

The dispute is real. When the town took it up, it chose others to act, "seing serjant harlow & Joseph Bartlet did somwhat decline the Thing" (Plymouth town records 1:200), which fits Harlow standing aside; John Rider deposed in the case. The writ itself, from the Plymouth Scrap Book, has not been checked, so the defendants' names rest on it.

  • Disproven
Samuel Rider (1), in Yarmouth by 1643, married Sarah Bartlett

She married his son, Samuel Rider Jr. (c. 1630-1715), on 23 Dec 1656, not in 1643 as the chart on p. 46 has it. Samuel Sr.'s will of 1679 names his wife Anne, who outlived him, so he was not Sarah's husband (Bowman, Mayflower Descendant 11). On p. 39a Mollie herself calls him "Samuel Rider (2)".

  • Proven
A 1662 certificate shows Samuel Rider came from Northampton, England

Confirmed. NEHGR 79 (1925): 316 prints it, under the Plymouth Colony seal, 3 Dec 1662: Samuel Jr. "is the Reputed sonne of Samuell Ryder senor; which said Samuell Ryder senior sometimes lived in the Towne of Northampton ... in the Parish of Alhallowes". The colony's magistrates issued it; Samuel did not write it.
