Freeman-Ellis Master Family Tree
Master reference for the Freeman and Ellis lines, from Edmund Freeman of Pulborough to Nancy Ellis, the mother of Capt. Richard Blackmer Holbrook Sr. It sits beside the Collins-Reed and Holbrook master trees and follows the same layout, so it survives any font, page width or paste. It holds births, deaths, marriages and relationships only. The stories and quotations are in Freeman_Ellis_Anecdotes.md, and the evidence and reasoning are in Freeman_Ellis_Line_Research.md.
Last revised: 1 October 2026. Built from the research file and from the third research pass (five reports on the Nye, Tupper, Churchill, Stephens, Harlow, Bennett and Ellis families, and a FamilySearch full-text pass of Plymouth and Barnstable deeds and probate).
How each entry reads

- Link: how the parent-child step to this person is supported, with its evidence tier.
- Siblings of direct ancestors get a single line.
Evidence tiers. [D] Documented: a primary record, or a published transcript, index, abstract or archive description of one. [C] Compiled: a secondary genealogy or online tree. [I] Inference: our own reasoning. [T] Tradition: family lore with no source. [?] marks an unproven link or claim.

Early-ship descents carried by this line (each is set out in Part Four)
- Mayflower 1620, Richard Warren, twice: through Mary Warren and Robert Bartlett to their daughters Rebecca (Harlow) and Sarah (Rider), and so to Phebe Harlow, mother of Phebe (Stephens) Ellis. Every link from Phebe Harlow up to Rebecca Bartlett is in the Plymouth records [D]; Rebecca and Sarah as daughters of Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren is standard [C].
- Mayflower 1620, John Howland, Elizabeth Tilley, and John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley: through Isaac Howland, Priscilla (Howland) Bennett and Lt. Joseph Bennett to Lucy (Bennett) Ellis [C for Lucy's parentage, D for her birth].
- Fortune 1621, Philip Delano: through Rebecca (Delano) Churchill to Elizabeth (Churchill) Ellis [C].
- Anne 1623, Robert Bartlett and Mary Warren: as above.
- William Pontus of the Leiden congregation, three times: through his daughters Hannah (Churchill) and Mary (Glass, Delano) to Elizabeth (Churchill) Ellis, and through Hannah's son Eleazer Churchill to Phebe (Stephens) Ellis.
- Abigail 1635, Edmund Freeman; and, if Mercy was a Nye, Thomas Tupper and Benjamin Nye, whose presence on the Abigail rests on Dennis Geere's will [C].

Edmund's will calls Perry "my son"; whether Mary was Edmund's daughter (Jacobus, Anderson, Paine) or Edward his stepson (Brainard, Dawes-Gates) is open. The weight of evidence favours a daughter born c. 1636 [I]
- Not his: "Cycella" (b. c. 1631), added by Paine after Otis [C], is probably the "Sycillae 4" of a different Freeman family on the Abigail [I]

- m. by Aug 1644, Sandwich (PCR 2:76-77, 85-86) [D]
- Note: John was lieutenant of the Sandwich military company from 1653 and kept an ordinary there from 1659. The claim that he was a son of John Ellis and Blandina Masterson of Sandwich, Kent, is disproven (WikiTree, after Paulick) [C]. Elizabeth was a Sippican (Rochester) proprietor as a widow, 1679-80.
- Link (Elizabeth): [D] her father's will (1682).
- Children (B-M via PJ unless marked):
- Elizabeth (c. 1645 - ?): m. Samuel Briggs of Sandwich and Sippican
- Bennet (1647/8 or 1648/9 - ?): b. 27 Feb (1648 in PCR 8:6, so 1647/8; the VR editors and PJ give 1648/9); m. Obadiah Eddy
- Lt. Mordecai (1650/1 - c. 1707): b. 24 Mar 1650/1, Sandwich [D]; d. probably 5 Feb 1706/7 (Sandwich VR editors), or 5 Feb 1709/10 (PJ); m. Sarah (d. 25 Oct 1716); son Mordecai d. 1 Nov 1717; dau. Sarah m. 8 June 1704 Joshua Blackwell

- Lt. Matthias Ellis (1657 - 1748): next entry
- Manoah (c. 1659 - ?): m. by 1679 Mary [the "Mary Burgess" label belongs here, if anywhere; B-M found no evidence for it]
- Freeman (c. 1661 - bef. 1728): d. Rochester bef. 20 June 1728 [C]; m. c. 1686 Mercy; children Thankful (29 May 1687), Dorothy (1 Jan 1691), Elizabeth (2 Oct 1693), Ebenezer (7 Feb 1695/6), Eleanor (1 Sept 1703) [D, Rochester VR]

Will dated 30 Nov 1744, proved at Barnstable 4 Oct 1748 (Barnstable Probate; FamilySearch 3:1:3Q9M-C9YB-793Z) [D]; it names wife Mercy, sons Joel, Matthias and Malachi, and daughters Mercy Morton, Experience Churchill and Mehitable Merrick.
- Link: [D] Sandwich VR birth as son of John Ellis; Edmund's deed of gift, 1678/9.
- Link (Mercy): her first name and her marriage to Matthias are [D] (nine births of children "of Matthias Ellis and Mercy Ellis his wife," and his will). Her identity as Mercy Nye is [C] [?] (B-M; Nye 1907). Against it: WikiTree treats her maiden name as unknown, and a WikiTree summary of a deed of 9 June 1704 has Benjamin Nye providing for "daughter Mercy" in his old age.
- Children (Sandwich VR [D]; names in brackets restored from a worn page [C]):
