What it says
The Frost Genealogy: descendants of William Frost of Oyster Bay, New York, showing connections never before published with the Winthrop, Underhill, Feke, Bowne, and Wickes families, by Josephine C. Frost (New York: Frederick H. Hitchcock, 1912), xii + 444 pages; three hundred copies printed. A supplement with corrections followed.
Cited in the Ancestry tree (through Ancestry’s “North America, Family Histories, 1500-2000”) for Lucile McMillan, her parents Alfred McMillan and Florence Frost, and the Frost line back through Stephen George Frost and George Frost to the Underhills. The pages have not been seen here.
Since read directly (From the research file (research/mcmillan/McMillan_Frost_Master_Research.md, October 2026); archive.org: frostgenealogyde00fros). It prints Lucile McMillan’s birth at
Tacoma, 17 Sept 1905 (p. 267), and carries the line back from Stephen G. Frost (p. 191) and George
(1791) (pp. 109-110) through George (1760) and Sarah Underhill (pp. 54-55), Isaac and Mary Cock
(p. 31), and William and Hannah Prior (p. 22), to William Frost of Setauket and Matinecock (d. 1719)
and Rebecca Wright (pp. 16-21). William (1674) “was accidentally killed while slaughtering a beef
which fell on him,” 1728 (p. 22). It prints the Bowne papers of 1662-63 (pp. 352-355).
Used further for the Long Island families above the Frosts (October 2026,
research/mcmillan/Frost_Underhill_Bowne_Feake.md), with the caution that the book often turns Quaker
month numbers into calendar months wrongly (before 1752 the 1st month was March, so the 8th is
October and the 12th February):
- William Frost’s will (pp. 19-20), “dated Mch. 28, 1698,” printed without a reference: “I give and bequeath to my two sons William and Wright Frost all my land and meadows … said William, my eldest son and Wright my youngest son,” and, failing heirs, “to any of the Frosts’ descended from George Frost born in Binsted, two miles from Farnam in Hampshire in old England.” Against it, the 1720 letters of administration to “wife, Eleanor” on an intestate estate.
- Nicholas Wright (pp. 19-21): “Rebecca, daughter of Nicholas and Ann (Beaupre) Wright” (p. 19); the Norfolk descent stated as fact; his will of 10 April 1674 “proven Dec. 15[?], 1682,” which “Mentions all his sons but not his daughters, probably because they were all married.”
- Hannah Prior (p. 22): “Hannah was born Oct. 22, 1681, and died Dec. 18, 1771” (the Friends’ record has the 22nd of the 10th month, December); Thomas Bowne “died July 18, 1677, aged eighty-two years.”
- John Feke (p. 33): “a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Fones) (Winthrop) Feke, b. 1638, m. Sept. 15, 1670” (the Friends’ record has the 15th of the 7th month 1673).
- Feake appendix (pp. 340-342): Robert Feake made freeman 18 May 1631; lieutenant under Capt. Daniel Patrick 4 Sept 1632; “He died Feb. 1, 1660-1, but married before the end of Jan., 1632, Elizabeth (Fones) Winthrop”; “Robert Feake died at the home of Samuel Thacher”; the Flushing Friends’ certificate of “ye second first day of ye 8th Mo, 1668” for John Underhill and Mary Pryer, witnessed by “Matthew Pryer” and “John ffeake”; “HANNAH, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bowne) Prior, m. (2) William Frost, b. 1674.”
- Winthrop appendix (pp. 346-348): Adam Winthrop “b. Aug. 10, 1548, d. Groton Manor, 1623, buried March the 28th. He was a lawyer and county magistrate,” m. (1) 16 Dec 1574 Alice Still, (2) “Feb. 20, 1579-80, Anne, daughter of Henry Browne of Edwardstone, who was a clothier … Anne died April 19, 1629”; their daughter Anne “b. Jan. 16, 1585, d. May 16, 1618,” with entries from her father’s diary; Elizabeth Fones “first married her own cousin, Henry Winthrop, on April 25, 1629”; and the diary’s “Sarah Winthrop was married to John Froste,” a Frost not known to be connected with William Frost of Oyster Bay.
- Fones appendix (p. 350): Thomas Fones, “citizen and apothecary of London, England, at the Three Fawns, Old Bailey … died April 16, 1629. Married Feb. 25, 1604-5, Anne … She died May 16, 1618, and he m., 2nd, Aug. 28, 1621, Priscilla, daughter of John Burgis, D.D., and widow of Bezaliell Shearman. Their second daughter and child was ELIZABETH (by first marriage), b. Jan. 21, 1609-10.” The longer Fones pedigree “of Saxby” is not supported.
- Bowne appendix (pp. 352-355): Thomas Bowne “baptized July 25, 1595, Matlock … d. Sept. 18, 1677, Flushing”; John Bowne “b. May 9, 1627 … baptized in parish church there May 29, 1627,” built his house at Flushing in 1661, m. (1) “on July 7, 1656” (other accounts, May 7) Hannah Feke, (2) 1679 Hannah Bickerstaff, “who d. June 25, 1690,” (3) 1693 Mary Cock; his daughter Elizabeth “b. Oct. 8, 1658, d. Oct. 14, 1721” (the Friends’ record: the 14th of the 12th month, February 1721/2), m. “Nov. 2, 1678, John Prier of Killingworth … John Prier d. Feb. 1, 1698” (the Friends’ record: the 2nd of the 4th month, June). Then the papers of 1662-63.
