John Prior
A Friend and farmer of Killingworth upon Matinecock, Oyster Bay, Long Island, probably the eldest son of Matthew Prior. He married Elizabeth, daughter of John Bowne of Flushing, in 1678 and died at Killingworth in 1698, in his late forties; his widow married Samuel Titus. Probably the father of Hannah (Prior) Frost.
Life
- 1650Born1650/1
From the Friends' records: "12/[?] mo. (Feb.) 165[0/1]" (Cock genealogy, p. 290; the printed day and year are damaged in the scan); Hinshaw's abstract "... Mo. (feb) 1650/1"; a later book has "12/1 mo. (March), 1650/51."
- 1678Married Elizabeth BowneFlushing, Long Island, New York
The day is in doubt: "9/2 mo. (Apl.) 1678" (Cock genealogy, p. 285) or "Nov. 2, 1678" (Frost Genealogy, p. 352). The 2nd of the 9th month would be 2 November.
- 1698Died2nd of 4th mo. 1698, Killingworth (Matinecock), Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York
The Quaker 4th month, before 1752, is June: 2 June 1698 ("d. Killingworth, 2/4 mo. (June) 1698," Cock genealogy, p. 290; Hinshaw "4 Mo. (June) 2, 1698"). The Frost Genealogy's "Feb. 1, 1698" (p. 352) is a misreading.

Notes
Father of Hannah (Prior) Frost: the eldest son of Matthew Prior of Killingworth upon Matinecock, and husband of Elizabeth Bowne, daughter of John Bowne of Flushing. “They were Friends and farmers, living at Killingworth on land bought of Joseph Eastland, recently in possession of William C. Townsend, on west side of road to Oak Neck Beach” (source, p. 290).
He died at Killingworth in June 1698, in his late forties. His widow married Samuel Titus. Their children, from the Friends’ records (source, p. 290): John, born the 16th of the 7th month 1679 (d. 1748); Hannah, born the 22nd of the 10th month 1681, who married William Frost; Elizabeth (1683), who married William Carpenter; Mary (1685); Sarah (1687); Matthew (1690), who married Hannah Cock; Samuel (1692); and Joseph (1695), who married Deborah Underhill.
His sister Elizabeth married John Feke, and so the Frosts descend from Matthew Prior twice: Isaac Frost, Hannah’s son, and his wife Mary Cock, Elizabeth’s granddaughter, were second cousins.
