Hannah Prior

Also Hannah Pryer · Hannah Frost

Wife of William Frost (1674) and probably the mother of Isaac Frost (1717). She was probably the daughter of John Prior of Matinecock and Elizabeth Bowne, and so a granddaughter of John Bowne of Flushing, who was arrested by Peter Stuyvesant in 1662 for allowing Quaker meetings in his house, was banished, and appealed to the Dutch West India Company, whose reply of 1663 directed that consciences be left free.

Life

  1. 1681
    Born
    22nd of 10th mo. 1681

From the Friends' records: "II Hannah, b. 22/10 mo. (Dec.) 1681; m. William (2) Frost" (Cock genealogy, p. 290). The Quaker 10th month, before 1752, is December, so 22 Dec 1681 (FamilySearch's date). The Frost Genealogy's "Oct. 22, 1681" (p. 22) misreads the month.

  2. c. 1700
  3. 1771
    Died
    18 Dec 1771

So the 1775 slave-owner entry for a Hannah Frost at Oyster Bay on FamilySearch is another woman.

John Prior 1650–1698

Second of John Priar's children "as shown by Friends' Record in New York" (Cock genealogy, p. 290); "Hannah, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Bowne) Pryer of Matinecock" (Frost Genealogy, p. 22). John Prior died the 2nd of the 4th month (June) 1698, not 1 Feb 1698 as the Frost Genealogy has it.

Notes

Wife of William Frost (1674). She was the daughter of John Prior and Elizabeth Bowne of Killingworth on Matinecock, and so a granddaughter of Matthew Prior and of John Bowne of Flushing, who was arrested by Peter Stuyvesant in 1662 for allowing Quaker meetings in his house, banished, and appealed to the Dutch West India Company, whose reply of 1663 directed that consciences be left free; the papers are printed in the Frost Genealogy, pp. 353-355 (source). Through her mother she descended from Lieut. Robert Feake and Elizabeth Fones, the widow of Henry Winthrop. Her father died when she was sixteen, and her mother married Samuel Titus.

She married William Frost about 1700, and their son Isaac married Mary Cock, the granddaughter of Hannah’s aunt Elizabeth (Prior) Feke: Isaac and Mary were second cousins through Matthew Prior, and second cousins once removed through Robert Feake and Elizabeth Fones.
