Notes

Father of Elizabeth (Fones) Feake: a London apothecary, “Son of Thomas Fones of Dedford in Bromsgrove, co. Worcester, apothecary in London at the sign of the Three Fawns in the Old Bailey” (source, 1:88 n. 27).

His letters to Anne Winthrop during their engagement, about 1603, survive among the Winthrop papers: “Long looked for comes at last, so sayth our english Prouerb … Ah how Impatient is loue of delayes if the sight of a poore letter bring such Joy how far wold yt exceed to touch that hand that wrote yt” (source, 1:149-150). He came to Groton on 23 February 1604/5, married Anne there on the 25th, and took her to London on the 27th (1:88). Their second daughter, Elizabeth, was born in January 1609/10 (1:104); another daughter, Martha, married her cousin John Winthrop the Younger. Anne died in 1618 or 1619, and in 1621 he married Priscilla, widow of Bezaleel Sherman (source, p. 350). He wrote often to his brother-in-law John Winthrop and to his nephew John Winthrop Jr. in the 1620s, and died in April 1629, ten days before his daughter Elizabeth’s marriage to Henry Winthrop.

The Frost Genealogy prints a long Fones pedigree “of Saxby,” back to about 1400 (pp. 349-350); the Winthrop Papers give his father only as “Thomas Fones of Dedford in Bromsgrove,” and the longer pedigree is not used.
