Elizabeth Bowne

Also Elizabeth Prior · Elizabeth Priar · Elizabeth Titus

Probably the eldest daughter of John Bowne of Flushing, the Quaker banished by Stuyvesant, and Hannah Feake, born at Flushing in 1658. She married John Prior of Killingworth upon Matinecock, Oyster Bay, in 1678, had eight children, and as his widow married Samuel Titus; she died at Killingworth in 1721/2. Probably the mother of Hannah (Prior) Frost.

01

Life

  1. 1658
    Born
8th of 8th mo. 1658, Flushing, Long Island, New York

    The Quaker 8th month, before 1752, is October: 8 Oct 1658 ("b. 8/8 mo. (Oct.) 1658," Cock genealogy, p. 285; "b. Oct. 8, 1658," Frost Genealogy, p. 352).

  2. 1678
    Married John Prior
    Flushing, Long Island, New York

The day is in doubt: "9/2 mo. (Apl.) 1678" (Cock genealogy, p. 285) or "Nov. 2, 1678" (Frost Genealogy, p. 352). The 2nd of the 9th month would be 2 November.

  3. 1721
    Died
14th of 12th mo. 1721, Killingworth (Matinecock), Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York

    The 12th month is February, so 14 Feb 1721/2 (Cock genealogy, pp. 285, 290, "14/12 mo. (Feb.) 1721"; Hinshaw "12 Mo (Feb) 14, 1721"). The Frost Genealogy's "Oct. 14, 1721" is a misreading.

Notes

Mother of Hannah (Prior) Frost: the second child and eldest daughter of John Bowne of Flushing, the Quaker banished by Stuyvesant, and his first wife Hannah Feake. She was four when her father was taken to Fort Amsterdam in 1662 and shipped to Holland, and five when he came home in March 1664. Her mother left on a ministry to Friends in Britain in 1675 and died in London in 1678.

She married John Prior of Killingworth upon Matinecock, son of Matthew Prior, in 1678 at Flushing, and lived with him at Killingworth “on land bought of Joseph Eastland … on west side of road to Oak Neck Beach” (source, p. 290). They had eight children between 1679 and 1695 (see John Prior). As his widow she married Samuel Titus, son of Edmund and Martha (Washburn) Titus, and she died at Killingworth in February 1721/2.

Through her the Frosts descend from Robert Feake and Elizabeth Fones twice over: her daughter Hannah’s son Isaac Frost married Mary Cock, whose grandfather John Feke was Elizabeth’s uncle.
