Anne Winthrop

Also Anne Fones · Anna Winthrop

Daughter of Adam Winthrop of Groton Manor, Suffolk, probably by his second wife Anne Browne, and sister of John Winthrop, governor of Massachusetts Bay. She married Thomas Fones, a London apothecary, at Groton in 1604/5 and went with him to London; she was probably the mother of Elizabeth (Fones) Feake, born in 1609/10, and died in 1618 or 1619.

Notes

Mother of Elizabeth (Fones) Feake, and sister of John Winthrop (1588-1649), governor of Massachusetts Bay: “Anne Winthrop (1586-1619), who married Thomas Fones of London, February 25, 1604-05” (source, 1:68 n. 80).

She grew up at Groton Manor in Suffolk, and her father’s diary follows her: a visit to her uncle Mildmay’s in 1587, “a new gown brought from London” in 1602 (source, p. 347, from the diary). Thomas Fones, a London apothecary, courted her by letter, “To my dearest frend Mrs. Anna Winthrop Junior at Groton” (source, 1:149). “The xxiijth T[homas] F[ones] came to Groton and was maried to my daughter Anne the xxvth. and they departed toward London the xxvijth day of February 1604” (1:88). In May 1605 she was back at Groton for the marriage feast of her brother John (Frost Genealogy, p. 347). In January 1609/10 “my daughter [Anne] Fones was d[eliuere]d of her seconde daughter” (1:104), Elizabeth. Another daughter, Martha, married her first cousin John Winthrop the Younger.

She died in 1618 or 1619, when Elizabeth was eight or nine.
