- His age, 31, puts his birth about 1848, two years after the 22 Dec 1845 on his death certificate (Washington certificate of death, John G. Short, Spokane, 1916). The 1900 census has December 1847 (1900 United States census, Chicago (Hyde Park Township, ward 34), Cook County, Illinois: John G. Short household). Mary's 27 fits her birth in 1852.
