What it says

By a son of Marion (Cumins) Chapin’s sister Charlotte, so Ella (Chapin) Browne’s first cousin; the preface thanks “Mesdames, E. P. C. Browne” among those “who have contributed details,” and names its printed sources: the Converse genealogies of C. A. Converse and J. J. Putnam, the Cummings genealogy of A. O. Cummings, Mooar’s Cummings Memorial, Shedd’s Daniel Shed and Wallbridge’s Henry Wallbridge and Descendants. Read in the archive.org full text (research/hatten/Browne_Chapin_Cumins.md).

  • Joseph Cumins “was b. 15th January, 1781, at Windsor, Vermont; d. 18th October, 1851, at Grandetour, Illinois; m., 2nd October, 1808, at Randolph, Vermont, Hannah Converse, who was b. 8th April, 1785, at Randolph; d. 21st August, 1856, at Grandetour” (p. 30; p. 54 has 31 August).
  • Marion O. Cumins, b. 8 Sept 1818 in Vermont, “d. 1889, at Wausau, Wisconsin; m., 11th February, 1847, at Parkman, Ohio, Marvin Chapin … son of Lorin and Sally (Brace) Chapin.” Their issue: “i. Ella Persis Chapin, b. 13th February, 1848, Parkman, Ohio; m. in Michigan, Edward Browne,” Frank W. and Robert L. No child is given for Ella (pp. 31-32).
  • Cummings (pp. 27-30): “ISAAC CUMMINGS, the emigrant ancestor, supposed of Scotch ancestry, is first mentioned in Essex County records by the Town Clerk of Watertown, where he received a grant of land in 1636; in July, 1638, he received another grant of land and in 1639 he owned a house and lot in the village of Ipswich. His wife’s name is unknown.” “JOHN CUMMINGS, (Isaac) of Boxford, Massachusetts; b. in 1630; d. 1st December, 1700; m. Sarah Howlett, who d. 7th December, 1700; dau. of Ensign Thomas and Alice (French) Howlett”; two of their sons were “killed by Indians, 2nd November, 1688.” “JOHN CUMMINGS, (John-Isaac) of Chelmsford, Massachusetts; was b. in Boxford, Massachusetts, in 1657; m., 13th September, 1680, Elizabeth Kingsley, who was b. 22nd November, 1657; d. 3rd July, 1706; dau. of Samuel and Hannah (Brockett) Kingsley.” “SAMUEL CUMMINGS, (John-John-Isaac) of Groton, Massachusetts, was b. 6th October, 1684, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts; d. 1718; m., 14th January, 1708, Elizabeth Shedd, dau. of Samuel and Elizabeth Shedd, of Billerica and Chelmsford”; their sons included “Jerahameal Cummings, b. 10th October, 1711.” “LEONARD CUMMINGS, (Samuel-John-John-Isaac) of Londonderry, New Hampshire, was b. 1714, in Dunstable (?), Massachusetts; d. 1758; m., circa 1738, Jane, surname unknown.” “JERAHAMEAL CUMMINGS, (Leonard-Samuel-John-John-Isaac) of Amherst, New Hampshire, and Windsor, Vermont; b. 20th September, 1750, in Londonderry (?), New Hampshire; d. Ebenezer Hood … m., 13th May, 1771, Deborah Kendall, who was b. 13th May, 1751, dau. of John and Hannah (Whittemore) Kendall.” Their eleven children, the first two born at Amherst, N.H., in 1772 and 1773, include Joseph (b. 15 Jan 1781). Two points differ from the Cummings Memorial it follows: Mooar does not make Leonard a son of Samuel Cummings (he gives Samuel three sons only and prints Leonard Cummins of Litchfield, N.H., as unplaced), and he dates Jerahmeel’s marriage 30 Apr 1771 (see Leonard Cummings).
  • Shedd (pp. 37-38): Samuel Shedd, b. 13 Aug 1660 at Billerica, “m., 1688, in Chelmsford, Massachusetts, Elizabeth Bowers … dau. of Jerathmeal (Capt.) Bowers”; their daughter “Elizabeth Shedd, b. 1688, m., (1) 14th January, 1708, Samuel Cummings … She m., secondly, Robert Robbins, 1720-21.”

Hill’s pedigree of the Conyers of Sockburn and make Edward the son of Christopher and Mary (Halford) Conyers of Wakerley, Northamptonshire (not accepted here). The account of Edward’s life (p. 40): “In the spring of 1630, with his second wife, Sarah, and three children, he sailed for New England with the Company of Governor John Winthrop, and in July the party landed at Charlestown. In 1631 he was admitted a Freeman … and he served as a Selectman from 1635 to 1640. In consideration of forty pounds per year rental, he received a Legislative Grant, in 1631, of a franchise for a ferry from Charlestown to Boston, on the site of the present Charles River Bridge … His name heads the list of Seven Commissioners appointed to settle the town of Woburn … The Church was organized circa 1641 and Edward Convers was chosen one of the first Deacons, serving as such until his death. S.), he completed the erection of his home … It was the first residence constructed in Woburn … Here he lived the remainder of his life, dying on 10th August, 1663.” Lt. But p. 44 also gives John Converse and Abigail Sawyer a son “Josiah Converse; m., (1) Hannah, surname unknown, in 1728; m., (2) Eleanor Richardson, in 1732,” the reading of the Woburn records’ Converse genealogy.
