Notes
Father of Dr. Marvin Chapin, and the eldest son of Jotham Chapin, who went from Monson, Massachusetts, to the wilderness south of the Mohawk in 1792 with his brother-in-law David Wood (source). Loring grew up at Winfield, among the families of his father’s sisters, the Woods and the Burts, and in 1815 he married Sarah (Sally) Brace, daughter of Charles Brace, the town’s first innkeeper, and granddaughter of Capt. Abel Brace, its founder. The Chapin Book gives him as “LORING CHAPIN … son Jotham & Ann (Waite) Chapin, of Winfield, N. Y. b. Feb. 26, 1790, d. Feb. 2, 1864, Silver Creek, N. Y.” (source).
Their children were Aurilla (died young at Winfield), Woodruff (1818-1893), Marvin (b. 24 Feb 1821), Persis Brandegee (1823-1843, died at Silver Creek) and Charles Brace (1825-1899): three of the five carried the names of Sally’s family, from her grandmother Keziah Woodruff, her mother Persis Brandegee and her father Charles Brace. The family moved west to Silver Creek, Chautauqua County, on Lake Erie, where Loring died in 1864 and Sally in 1871. His granddaughter Ella (Chapin) Browne called him “Lorin Chapin” in her DAR application of 1900 (source), and her cousin’s Kith and Kin (1922) names Marvin “son of Lorin and Sally (Brace) Chapin” (source).

Open questions
- Where was he born? Probably at Monson, before the move to Winfield, but no record says.
- His household in the 1850 census at Silver Creek, or his probate (Chautauqua County, 1864), would show Marvin as his son from a record rather than the family genealogies.
