Notes

Aunt of Ruth (Short) Ellingwood, the eldest of John Short and Mary Jeffrey’s six children. She was born at Cobourg on 23 November 1836, ten months after her parents’ marriage there, in the town where her uncle Andrew Jeffrey was a merchant. She grew up at Newcastle, in Clarke Township, where her father was postmaster from 1845, and after his death in 1858 went with her mother and the younger children to Cobourg and then to Woodstock, where the family lived on Graham Street.

She did not marry. In 1901 she was living at Woodstock with her youngest sister, Isabella, and Isabella’s husband, James Hay, as her sister Mary had in 1891 (the censuses, as WikiTree gives them), and she died at Woodstock in August 1909. The family then put up the tall stone at the Woodstock Presbyterian Cemetery that names her with her parents: “and their daughter Jane, born Nov. 23 1836 at Cobourg, died Aug. 6 1909 at Woodstock” (record).
