Mary Tompson

Also Mary Tompsonn · Mary Wise

Wife of Joseph Wise of Roxbury, Massachusetts, whom she married there in 1641, and probably the mother of Mary (Wise) Lamb and Abigail (Wise) Cogswell. She was probably the Mary baptized at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England, in 1619, daughter of John Tompson and Alice Freeman; through her mother she belonged to a gentry family. She died at Roxbury in 1693.

Notes

Wife of Joseph Wise of Roxbury. Through her mother, Alice Freeman, she belongs to a genuine gentry family, the one Mollie did not know about. She came to Roxbury as a girl with her mother, by 1640. Her uncle, Thomas Freeman of Cranford, gent., left a will in 1637 that names “sister Tompson” and her children, including Mary and Bridget; her sister Bridget married George Denison at Roxbury in March 1640 (Roxbury VR 2:398).

The Roxbury church admissions of about 1647-49 list “Mary Wise the wife of Joseph Wise” (Roxbury church records). Twelve children were baptized at Roxbury between 1643 and 1666, among them Rev. John Wise (1652); two sons named Benjamin died as infants, in 1660 and 1664 (Roxbury VR 1:389, as listed on WikiTree Wise-52). She outlived Joseph by nine years, and was granted administration of his estate with their son John in September 1684 (Anderson, TAG 56:80-82, as cited on WikiTree).

Mollie (pp. 96-100) makes her a daughter of Rev. William Tompson of Braintree. Winthrop says Rev. William’s wife left “a company of small children” in 1643 (Winthrop 2:94), so he could not have had a daughter marrying in 1641.

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about her checked against the records.

  1. Mollie makes her a daughter of Rev. William Tompson of Braintree, born about 1636 and married to Joseph Wise in 1641; the records show she was the daughter of John Tompson and Alice Freeman, baptized in 1619.

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
Joseph Wise married Mary Tompson, a minister's daughter

Mary Tompson, baptized at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, in 1619, was probably the daughter of John Tompson, gent., of Little Preston and Alice Freeman (Anderson, TAG, 1980). Rev. William Tompson of Braintree, the minister Mollie names, cannot be her father: his children were still small in 1643, and she married in 1641.

  • Disproven
Mary Tompson was a daughter of Rev. William Tompson of Braintree

Not his daughter. Mollie's own date for her, "born before or shortly after 1636", cannot fit a bride of 1641, and in 1643 his wife left "a company of small children" (Winthrop). Scholars (TAG 13, 56, 87) make Mary, bp. 1619, a daughter of John Tompson, gent., of Little Preston and Alice Freeman, which Anderson calls probable.

  • Proven
Rev. William Tompson was one of the ministers sent to Virginia

True: Winthrop's Journal records his Virginia mission and his melancholy. But he was not Mary (Tompson) Wise's father: his wife died in 1643 leaving "a company of small children", as quoted here, and Mary was probably a daughter of John Tompson and Alice Freeman of Northamptonshire.
