Joseph Wise

Butcher, of Roxbury, Massachusetts, named as a servant in Dr. George Alcock's will of 1640, and probably the Joseph Wise baptized at Bulkington, Warwickshire, England, in 1617. He married Mary Tompson at Roxbury in 1641 and had twelve children, among them Mary (Wise) Lamb, Rev. John Wise, minister at Chebacco from 1680, and probably Abigail (Wise) Cogswell.

Notes

Butcher, of Roxbury, where he was by 1640. First found as a servant in Dr. George Alcock’s will (December 1640) (Anderson, TAG 56). Mollie (pp. 95-96) has him arriving on the Bonaventure in 1636, for which there is no evidence, and descending from the Wises of Sydenham, Devon; West (NEHGR 177:141-143, 2023) places his baptism at Bulkington, Warwickshire.

In 1648 Nicholas Davison wrote to John Winthrop Jr. that he had “agreed with Joseph Wise of Roxburry Butcher for the payment of the fiftey pounds due to mr. Francis Warner of London” (Winthrop Papers 5:264). He bought livestock from Winthrop’s new settlement at Pequot (New London): on 4 May 1649 he wrote from “roxby” asking Winthrop to arrange to send his cattle and whether he had any goats to sell, and on 3 Nov 1649 he signed a receipt for “7 beife and 56 goats” and “88 li. of tallo besids” (5:341-342, 375). Roger Williams wrote in 1649 that part of a debt of his had been settled with “six pounds which he paid for me to Joseph Wise the Butcher” (5:313).

He had twelve children. Two are ancestors of Harriet Low, so she descends from Joseph and Mary twice: Mary (bp. 27 Feb 1649/50), wife of Caleb Lamb, and Abigail (b. 20 June 1666), wife of Adam Cogswell. Rev. John Wise (bp. 15 Aug 1652), minister at Chebacco from 1680, who resisted Andros’s taxes in 1687, was another son. A third daughter, Katherine (bp. 10 Oct 1658), married Richard Mather of Dorchester in 1680 and is an ancestor on the Hatten side, through the Mathers and Marvins of Lyme.

Mollie's typescript· 2 passages · 3 claims checked

What Mollie wrote about him in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about him checked against the records.

  1. Mollie says he came in 1636 (no evidence of that has been found) and served Dr. George Alcock of Roxbury to pay his passage, until a clause in the doctor's will set him free.

Joseph was in Roxbury in 1636, as a "servant" to Dr. George Alcock, under contract to serve in payment for cost of transportation to the Colony. Joseph did not finish his term of service because a clause in the Doctor's will set him free.

  2. He married Mary Tompson, whom Mollie takes for a minister's daughter, and named his first son John, the famous Rev. John Wise of Chebacco.

Checked against the records

  • Disproven
Edward Doty and Joseph Wise, younger sons of noble families, were ancestors

Edward Doty was not an ancestor: the "Mary Doty" who married a Churchill in 1687/8 was Thomas Doty's widow, not Eleazer Churchill's wife. Joseph Wise was an ancestor, twice, but of no noble family: he was baptized at Bulkington, Warwickshire, in 1617, son of Henry Wise (West, NEHGR, 2023).

  • Possible
Joseph Wise came over on the Bonaventure in 1636

No record of the voyage has been found. He is first found in Dr. George Alcock's will of December 1640, as his servant. Baptized at Bulkington, Warwickshire, on 17 June 1617, he would have been about 18 in 1636, as Mollie thought likely.

  • Disproven
Joseph Wise descends from the Wises of Sydenham, Devon

Mollie calls it conjectural, and the records rule it out. Joseph Wise was baptized at Bulkington, Warwickshire, on 17 June 1617, son of Henry Wise and Katherine Willmore (West, NEHGR 177, 2023), far from the Devon Wises.
