Notes
Born at Letart on the Ohio River in 1802, she married Benjamin Philbrick in Gallia County in 1818, was widowed by 1834, married George Rice that May and William Cheeseman in 1853 (source). In her mid-fifties she went to Minnesota Territory, where she is in the census of 1857; she lived at Northfield and is buried at Red Rose Cemetery, Waterford, with her daughter Sarah Ann and Ralph Hatten.
Her father was very probably Pickett Marvin of Lyme, Connecticut, “a young man from the Eastern
States” who married Polly Warth and settled in Gallia County, “where Mr. Marvin served several years
as Magistrate” (source); he sat in the Ohio House in 1809-10, moved to Bloomfield Township,
Jackson County, in 1819, where Benjamin and Ruth were living by 1820, and died there in 1853
(source). Through him she would descend from the Lyme Marvins, from
Catharine Mather, granddaughter of Richard Mather and
Katherine Wise of Roxbury (a daughter of
Joseph Wise), and through the Noyeses from
Elder William Brewster of the Mayflower. The line is set out in research/hatten/Hatten_Philbrick_Marvin.md.
Open questions
- Was she Pickett Marvin’s daughter? The case is circumstantial: Pickett was the Marvin of Letart, where she was born; she married in Gallia County; the family moved together to Bloomfield. No record names her as his child. His estate (Jackson County probate, 1853) or the 1818 marriage record would settle it.
- Her death: 1891 (the tree) or 1897 (WikiTree).
