Notes
Capt. Timothy Mather of Lyme, eldest child of Richard Mather and Katherine Wise, born at Dorchester in March 1680/1 and taken as a small boy to Lyme, where his father bought land in 1687 and died the next year (source). He married Sarah Noyes, a daughter of Rev. Moses Noyes, Lyme’s first minister.
Their children: Capt. Timothy (1711), who married Sarah Lay; Joseph (1713), who married Joanna Matson; Ruth (1715), who married James Marvin; Catharine (1717/18), who married Capt. Elisha Marvin; and Rev. Dr. Moses Mather (1719-1806), the minister of Darien whom Loyalist raiders carried off in 1781, and great-great-grandfather of Stephen Tyng Mather, first director of the National Park Service. He died on 25 July 1755.
The Lyme branch he founded with his father is, the Mather genealogy says, the largest: “Although Mr. Mather died at the age of thirty-five years, his descendants far outnumber either of the other branches, the Windsor, or Suffield” (source).
