Abigail Varney
Wife of Caleb Low, whom she married at Chebacco in Ipswich, Massachusetts, on 8 Jan 1732/3, and mother of Nathan Low (b. 1742). A daughter of Thomas Varney and Abigail Cogswell, born at Chebacco in 1713, she was probably her husband's second cousin, both being great-grandchildren of Joseph Wise and Mary Tompson of Roxbury. She probably died at Ipswich in 1800, aged 86.

"[Catharine, c. R. 4.], wid. Caleb, Dec. 30, 1800, a. 86 y." (2:624). Rev. John Cleaveland's Chebacco deaths, printed by Crowell (pp. 465-467), have the same: "Dec. 30 [1800]. Widow Catherine Low, aged 86." The age fits Abigail; the name does not.

Notes
Wife of Caleb Low. She and Caleb were second cousins, both great-grandchildren of Joseph Wise and Mary Tompson of Roxbury.
Her grandmother, Abigail (Proctor) Varney, was a sister of John Proctor, hanged at Salem in 1692 (Essex Quarterly Courts 5:195; 7:218), which made Proctor her great-uncle.
Mollie (p. 101) makes Thomas Varney (b. 1682) the husband of Abigail Proctor, and their daughter Abigail, born “Oct. 4, 1733,” the wife of Caleb Low. Abigail Proctor married Corporal Thomas Varney (d. 1692); their son Thomas married Abigail Cogswell; and the town record gives this Abigail’s birth as 14 Oct 1713, which also fits her 1733 marriage.

Checked against the records
- DisprovenCaleb Low's wife was a daughter of the church-raising Abigail Varney
A generation is dropped. Caleb's wife Abigail, born at Chebacco on 14 Oct 1713, was the daughter of Thomas Varney Jr. and Abigail Cogswell. The Abigail Varney who helped raise the meeting house in 1679 was Abigail (Proctor) Varney, her grandmother.
