Mary Lamb

Also Mary Low

Wife of Sgt. David Low of Chebacco in Ipswich, Massachusetts, whom she married in 1699, and probably the mother of Caleb Low. She was probably a daughter of Caleb Lamb and Mary Wise, and so a niece of Rev. John Wise, minister at Chebacco from 1680. She died at Chebacco on 3 Mar 1735.

Notes

Wife of Sgt. David Low of Chebacco. Her uncle, Rev. John Wise, was minister at Chebacco from 1680. Through her son David she is an ancestor of Seth Low, mayor of New York and president of Columbia.

Mollie (pp. 92-94) makes her a daughter of Caleb Lamb and Mary Wise, which the records support, though her birth is not recorded.

What Mollie wrote about her in The Holbrook and Low Families, and her claims about her checked against the records.

  1. Mollie's Lamb chart gives her birth at Roxbury about 1681, her marriage to David Low in 1699 and her death in 1735.

  2. Her sister Hulda came to live with her after their mother's death, and Mollie thinks she met David Low through their uncle, the Rev. John Wise, pastor at Chebacco.

After her mother's death, Hulda went to live with her sister Mary who had married David Low, and it is probable that Mary met David through her uncle the Rev. John Wise who was pastor in Chabacco Parish, David's home.

Checked against the records

  • Possible
Mary Lamb, Caleb Lamb's daughter, was born at Roxbury on 7 Mar 1681

Probable, but her birth is not recorded. Caleb and Mary (Wise) Lamb's first Mary, born 13 Apr 1678, died of smallpox on 4 July 1679; David Low's wife is taken to be a later daughter, born about 1680-82. Her death, 3 Mar 1735, is recorded at Chebacco.

  • Proven
Rev. John Wise, pastor at Chebacco, was Mary Lamb's uncle

Roxbury records give Mary Wise (bp. 27 Feb 1649/50), later Caleb Lamb's wife, and John Wise (bp. 15 Aug 1652) as children of Joseph Wise. John was the Chebacco minister from 1680, so David Low's bride was his niece. How the couple met is not recorded.
