Mary Reed
Daughter of James Reed, who asked the clerk of Clay County, Kentucky, in writing to license her marriage to Jesse Collins; they married there on 13 Dec 1827. The family moved through Indiana, Illinois and Missouri to Appanoose County, Iowa, where in 1850, widowed, she headed a household in which she and all her children were marked "M" for mulatto. Mother of Mary Elizabeth "Polly" Collins; she probably died about 1852.

Notes
Her father James Read wrote to the Clay County clerk, Abner Baker, on 25 November 1827: “Mr Abner Baker Sir ples to grant Jesse Collens lisens to marrey Mary Red and oblige them,” with Stephen Read and Hiram Collins as witnesses. She married Jesse Collins in Clay County on 13 December 1827, the same day and before the same minister (J. Ambres) as Stephen Reed and Nancy Powell, probably a double wedding with her brother; Stephen was Jesse’s surety on the marriage bond (record). Her daughter Mary Elizabeth “Polly” Collins had been born on 30 January 1827, ten and a half months before the wedding. A second daughter, Delilah Susan (b. 1828), may carry her mother’s name, if that was Susannah. Her probable sister Elizabeth married Hiram Collins, Jesse’s brother, in 1829. Her daughter Matilda’s death certificate (Kirksville, 1918) gives her mother’s maiden name as Mary Reed (record).
She and Jesse were in Morgan County, Indiana, by 1830, and Matilda was born there in May 1831, the county where her father’s family settled in 1831 if he is the Morgan County James. The children’s birthplaces then run through Indiana (to about 1836), Illinois (about 1838) and Missouri (about 1840) to Appanoose County, Iowa, where Jesse died in 1847.
In December 1850 she headed a household in Wells Township, Appanoose County, with Matilda, Reuben (16, farming), Lloyd, Kalaska and Spencer. She and all her children were marked “M” for mulatto, the only household so marked in the family’s Iowa network; she could not read or write, and no property is listed. She had settled near Tilford and Benjamin Reed, possibly her brothers, rather than near the Collinses in Center Township. By 1856 the family had scattered.
Open questions
- What fixes her death at about 1852? Where is she buried?
- She gave Virginia as her birthplace in 1850, while her father’s household was in Ashe County, North Carolina, in 1800 and 1810. Ashe borders Grayson County, Virginia.
- Her maternal line is the one a Reed mtDNA test would trace (Elizabeth Reed’s daughter-lines are the cousin route; see the origin-line addendum, task 60).
