Jesse Collins
Married Mary Reed in Clay County, Kentucky, on 13 Dec 1827, with the written consent of her father, James Reed, and was probably in Morgan County, Indiana, by 1830; their children were born in Indiana, Illinois and Missouri. The family was farming in Appanoose County, Iowa, when he probably died there in 1847. Father of Mary Elizabeth Collins, who married Eli Woodruff Bruner, and probably a son of Meredith Collins.
Life
- c. 1804BornVirginia, probably Russell County
No birth record. The year fits the run of Polly Holloway's children and the four boys under 10 in Meredith's 1810 household. His daughter Mary Elizabeth gave both her parents' birthplace as Virginia in 1880, and Meredith was on the Russell County tax rolls 1799-1809. FamilySearch has North Carolina, and an older note Kentucky.

By J. Ambres (Ambrose), the same day and minister as Stephen Reed and Nancy Powell, probably a double wedding. James Read's consent note is dated 25 Nov 1827; the bond, with Stephen Reed as surety, was given in November.

The research calls this settled (23 Sep 2026). No record names his father; the case is his age, which fits Polly Holloway's children, the room for him in Meredith's 1810 household, and his brother Hiram's witnessing his consent note.

Notes
His father-in-law James Read wrote to the Clay County clerk on 25 November 1827: “Mr Abner Baker Sir ples to grant Jesse Collens lisens to marrey Mary Red and oblige them,” with Stephen Read and Hiram Collins as witnesses. Jesse gave the marriage bond of £50 with Stephen Reed as his surety, both signing with their marks (record). Their daughter Mary Elizabeth had been born ten and a half months before the wedding. Their daughter Matilda’s death certificate of 1918 names her parents as Jesse Collins and Mary Reed (record).
Not in Clay County in 1830: by then he and Mary were in Morgan County, Indiana, where the 1830 census has a Jesse Collins household matching theirs; Matilda was born there in May 1831. The children’s birthplaces run Indiana (about 1830-1836), Illinois (about 1838) and Missouri (about 1840). The J. Collins household in St. Ferdinand Township, St. Louis County, Missouri, in 1840, counted white, is a probable match but not a certain one. The family was farming in Appanoose County, Iowa, by the time he died in 1847, near Tilford and Benjamin Reed. They seem to have rented: no property is listed for his widow in 1850.
No DAR lineage runs through him.

Where and when did he die? The reasoning so far (Oct 2026): he probably died in Appanoose County, Iowa, about 1845-1847, after the family got there. In 1850 his widow Mary was farming there with Reuben, 16, the eldest son at home; a widow and a boy of about 13 would hardly have started a farm in a new place alone, though they had family nearby. The 1847 year is from FamilySearch, source unknown. A record of him there about 1845 is remembered; its citation still needs finding.
